Can anybody tell me what is our record for Premiership points earned in a season? Even in our great times there were only 17 games so we must have a big chance to go better.

My understanding is 16 wins 6 losses in 2004 and no finals wins being beaten by Bombers in their last finals win in the elimination Final.
In our glory years 1956 I believe we won 16 and lost 2 in home and away round then won the 2 finals ( 2nd Semi and Grand Final) and the flag of course.

Where  you get your 17 game information from is mystifying. You only need to consider years we have made the Top 4, 5, 6 and 8. A total of 18 games was the normal number except in years which were affected by the World Wars from 1914/18 and 1941/45 with not all Clubs participating in each season.

The AFL season has  been a total of 20 and 22 games for the last 30/40 years and only 2020 was shortened to 17 Rounds as we all know due to Covid impact.

So the 16 record for home and way wins can be broke as can the 18 wins total for 1956 including Finals as our most winning season.

We are  a great chance to break both IMO.

If any D/Lander has any other figures to contradict this summary pleas feel get to offer your contribution as I am going on general knowledge rather than consulting record books.

given the season length has changed over the decades, a better measure would be least number of losses,  or just a % figure of games won (e.g.. 16 out of 18 equates to 19.5 out of 22, 17 out of 18 equates to 20.8 out of 22)

I Disagree.
You can only go on total wins otherwise you may as well start splitting Each Premiership from 1900 to 1964 on its merits ie games win or lost etc with W snd L. Being The salient solo figure.

Each season is different and a total of wins/ losses is always going to be crucial but that is the stories  that lay behind the records that books etc  can keep us informed about snd fascinate us fans.

we can do it any way we want.....and the press certainly will if it creates a story

so pick your own poison -   wins   losses    %wins   or whatever, i really don't care that much

Season extended to 20 rounds in 68 and 69 and then to 22 rounds from 1970.

Best year for the Dees was 1956 - 16 H + A wins and two finals = 18

1955 we won 15 H + A and 2 finals =17

1990 we won 16 H + A and 1 final = 17

So we have never won more than 16 games in the regular season, - this is surely a record we need / must break this year to give us a real chance for premiership.

Most games won in a season -

16 out of 22 total, in 1990

16 out of 18 total, in 1956

But the REAL record to chase this weekend is our best year in an odd-numbered season.

A win over the Hawks pushes us level with 1989 (14wins) and prior to that we go all the way to 1955 with 15 wins.

I'm sorry it was a typo - I meant 18 games. So 16 wins or 64 points is our record for a season I guess.

Correct.

We've never won 17 games in a season before.

As I mentioned in the embarrassing records thread, Hawthorn won 17+ games in a season five times in six years (2011-2016).

In our last premiership year 1964 we finished on top of the ladder after 18 games. Two more wins against the filth gave us a flag.

In one season under Neale we were on top of the ladder after 18 games but then fell in a heap. No joy.

My wish is that this year we are top of the ladder again after 18 games but that we do not fall in a heap. Still a chance for joy.

Go dees.

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

GAMEDAY: Rd 15 vs North Melbourne

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.

    THE HUNTER by The Oracle

Something struck me as I sat on the couch watching the tragedy of North Melbourne’s attempt to beat Collingwood unfold on Sunday afternoon at the MCG.    It was three quarter time, the scoreboard had the Pies on 12.7.79, a respectable 63.16% in terms of goal kicking ratio. Meanwhile, the Roos’ 18.2.110 was off the charts at 90.00% shooting accuracy. I was thinking at the same time of Melbourne’s final score only six days before, a woeful 6.15.51 or 28.57% against Collingwood’s 14.5.89

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t
