There's a brief article in today's Snap Shot in "The Age" which points out that Harry Graham was the first non-Englishman to make a century on debut at Lord's. The article from Peter Ryan also points out that Graham played two games for Melbourne in 1900. They were both wins against Carlton and Essendon. So, Graham made a 100 at Lord's and has a 100% win record playing for the MFC in, cough, nineteen hundred.

(The Graham part is the second story in Snap Shot. And if it's behind a paywall, don't worry. There's not much more to the story than the above.)

I like this side story and it deserves at least one reply. Thanks for putting it out there. Other first class cricketers from MFC include Max Walker, Graeme Watson and Neil Crompton. Any others?

And he couldn’t have notched up his two wins against better sides.

The Duke, but played cricket in WA. And pretty sure big Biff played cricket in Tassie.

Tom Wills, although might not meet the modern definition of "first class cricketer" given he played before the concept of "first class cricket" was known.

Is this on DemonWiki? @Supermercado
might be interested in adding it if not

Here's the current Harry Graham profile http://demonwiki.org/Harry+Graham

If you want to be like Colin Carter and claim the VFA you could say he played in losses for us in his first stint (1892/1894) before concentrating on cricket. Interesting that his VFL career was so short because he went off looking for gold halfway through the season.

I am so glad you mentioned this as I was invited to a book launch a few years ago of a biography about Harry Graham "The Little Dasher". It isn't an easy read as it is a sad story with a very unhappy ending for such a talented sportsman. The launch was held at the MCG library and there were a few MFC and Melbourne district club champions in attendance.

The dinner later on was a school boy dream. The author Ron Cardwell his team along with special guests from the launch. Graeme (Beetle) Watson, Paul Sheehan, Peter Bedford and Keith Stackpole were fascinating to talk to.

Watson played for both MFC & MCC, Victoria and Australiawhich is a fair C.V. Sadly he has since passed as did Tangles Walker, (who had the same C.V.) years ago. The book is pictured below and I got it signed by the boys.

Is the author related to Jim Cardwell, Melbourne's own legendary "Prince of Secretaries"?

Not that I know of.

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator attended training out at Casey Fields to bring you the following observations from Preseason Training. GATOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS There were 5 in the main rehab group, namely Gawn, Petracca, Fullarton, Woewodin and Lever.  Laurie was running laps by himself, as was Jefferson.  Chandler, as has been reported, had his arm in a sling.  Lindsay did a bit of lap running later on. Some of the ''rehab 5'' participated in non contact drills and b

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session.
