Can someone tell me why the colour was changed in the first place?

The evolution of boot studs sounds riveting.

Because of the advent of colour TV in Australia in March 1975.  From memory, we were seen to look too much like Carlton (not a desirable thing!).

Teams also started wearing coloured shorts replacing the traditional black at home and white away.

For the first 11 years of my life I only associated the Dees with the Royal Blue jumper. In fact I wasn't even aware that we ever wore the darker shade of blue because the only photos I ever saw from the old days were in black and white.

When the Dees reverted back to the Navy Blue in 1987 it was a bit of a novelty but with the success that we had in the following years I began to associate the Royal Blue with loss and failure.

Fast forward to the days of alternate strips I was always a fan of the predominately red jumper with the demon logo or M logo.

When we eventually brought back the Royal Blue strip I was an instant fan for the nostalgia that it elicited  and like it as an alternate strip with the caveat that it should only be used when there is an actual clash with the Home strip of another team.

I do not like wearing it when there is no clash like we did against the Giants the other week and I bet you we will be wearing it against the Hawks this week when there is definitely no clash with our Navy strip.

I wonder who makes the decision? The AFL or the Club?

Can the AFL please explain why we wore the royal blue clash jumper in an away fixture against Collingwood two seasons ago?  Bizarre.  It is the best alternate strip we've had but wearing a clash for the sake of a clash is completely unnecessary.

Nice pun. As you can see in these boots belonging to former Collingwood player Bruce Andrew, boot studs were produced by riveting.

think you'll find they were nailed (not rivetted). the 5 dots on each stud are the nail heads

these were the dreaded aluminium stops (as against leather or plastic). Very dangerous when they developed a sharp edge, hence why the then ritual of the umpire visiting change rooms before game to inspect each players boots. aluminium studs now banned and all studs now moulded to sole or screw in (no more nails)

Perhaps this thread could supersede the No T$ No BS thread in terms of drivel spouted?

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
