The best kicks were from full back after a behind. Phil Roden was unquestionably he best at MFC, if not the league. Perfect balance, timing and style made his left foot drop kicks lower than most but long and accurate. Worth getting to matches early just watch him kick in in the ressies. Bernie Massey and Tassie Johnson were next best from FB.

Curious? Was Phil's full moniker Philip Hamilton Rhoden? Believe there was a previous thread on demonland regarding that 'gentleman's' professional activities.

Stuart Spencer wasn't from Tasmania!

He certainly was not! I retract my earlier reply. Came to us from Portland. Sorry to doubt you demonstone.

Like me Farmer.. I think I saw Stuart Spencer once or twice I think in 1955-6 when he paired with Ian Ridley.  According to Demonwiki, 82 goals between them in 1956!If I remember, Denis Cordner might still have been playing and Peter Marquis. :)

Stuart Spencer is my choice. I can still see those long raking drop kicks with his left boot. A real champion. Coming over to Perth I remember Perth full back John Quartermaine, His drop kicking was also a delight.  My namesake had a brilliant stab pass  hitting team mates right on the chest.

Mitch Clark.

I think Ron's steel-capped 'Ron Barassi' boots make all the difference. Still remember the pair I got for my 8th birthday.

Yes there was a thread.... However Phil Rhoden's best kick was a torpedo punt and he was so well balanced and so good at executing the kick the opposition supporters would sometimes applaud while spinning perfectly through the air.

Mainly a reserves player as he only played 3 games in the ones. Wasn't one for many possession.

Wondering if you kept those boots Bush Demon? I was thinking the other day of how many things I have thrown out over the years that would be treasures today....including my Melbourne guernsey with 31 on the back. From memory, did those boots have Rons signature in silver on the  ankle bone part of the boot?

Yes they had Ron's signature as you describe. My parents sprung a surprise by delivering them to me at school on my birthday. I duly wore them around the school, cork stops and all. When we went overseas later that year they must have got chucked out. My next boots (about four years later, for under 12s) were Adidas lookalikes, with soft toes and low ankles!
