Johnstone, White, Woewodin, Robertson, Rivers, Leoncelli, Mclean, Bizzell, Bruce, even Green and McDonald who only really consolidated late in or after the Daniher period

Not many hard nuts in that group - good players when they footy is free flowing but hard tough lockdown finals footy and they're going to struggle

We also beat west coast twice in 1990. The Pies beat us in H&A but we had knocked them out of the finals in 88 and 89 and our September record against them overall means we would've had a chance. Truly the one that got away

Absolutely, we copped a really tough run home, and in the finals.

We were definitely too cocky and arrogant in 1990 against WC.Β As keeps on happening for us when the media pumps up our tires we fall in hole. Everyone was saying there’s no way WCΒ could beat us. We hadΒ an undisciplined and lazy start,Β wereΒ jumped early, game totally lost at half timeΒ andΒ played catch up footy for the remainder of the game but never got close. For those who are too young to remember that game was eerilyΒ similar to the round 23 debacle against Collingwood in 2017. As for the the comparison between the Northey and Daniher eras, Northey wins hands down. He was remarkably consistent with a workman like list that in many ways over achieved.Β Β Daniher had better talent but inconsistent yearΒ to year results. It was the β€œHollywood” golden era for us withΒ too many easily satisfied players.

That 1990 SF was definitely an opportunity lost, but the Eagles were also on their way up.

This didn't help - according to Demon wiki:

"Β Garry LyonΒ missed the match after being collected heavily byΒ Steve O'DwyerΒ in a Thursday night training mishap."

One aspect of the Daniher/Northey eras and to a lesser extent now with Goodwin is that when on the cusp of tangibleΒ success and it appears achievable we get stage fright and exit ingloriously. I can’t recall any of our finals exits with the exception of the elimination final in 2004 against EssendonΒ since 1987Β that wereΒ fought out to the finish or weΒ being unlucky. We tend to fold like a cheap suit and get tossed out in an ugly manner.Β

This is a ridiculous comment.

Β

Cheap suits don't fold. Expensive wool suits do.Β

It needed to be said.

(I don't disagree with your point, by the way)

What'd he do? Put his head through the arm hole?

This is why we need specialist coaches.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons return to the MCG wounded, undermanned and desperate. Still searching for their first win of the season, Melbourne faces a daunting task against the Fremantle Dockers. With key pillars missing at both ends of the ground, the Dees must find a way to rise above the adversity and ignite their season before it slips way beyond reach. Will today be the spark that turns it all around, or are we staring down the barrel of a 0–6 start?
