Just wondering about Declan Kielty returning. He was a very good key defender or key forward.  Would be handy for Casey as a new addition. Was going to play for Bentleigh in 2020.

Maybe they can get Wale-Buxton back. He was a pretty decent back up ruck when he was at the club.

I think he signed up with an interstate club at the end of last season.

Yes he showed promise. Perhaps too much.
Signed with Woodville-West Torrens Eagles for 2020.

Based on the practice match form, Casey would be very thin and not really competitive against teams like Port, Werribee and Williamstown.  The team only has about 9-10 VFL experienced players and then about another 9-10 under 18 graduates. They would need to recruit another 5-6 players including key CHB, CHF, Ruck and a quality onballer. There may some VFL listed players from the AFL reserves clubs like Essendon, Footscray, Collingwood etc who like Hustwaite would see benefit in playing this shortened season.

Likely structure so far:

Munro Hutchins White

Ellison*   Xxxxx        Vella

DiPasquale  Mutimer Sparkes*

Lewis    Xxxxx        McCaffrey

Briggs   Smith*  Xxxxx

Courtney* Hustwaite Xxxx

Int. Hourigan*  Johnson Modica Goonan*

emerg. Grey* Lambie* Baldi*

Good point... there is also the Northern Blues

Hope the clubs are sensible with temporary clearances etc.

There's also the difficult question of how to pay these players.

Well that won't hurt him (Wale-Buxton), playing seniors in Adelaide.

Two players from Rowville in the ENFL Nick Lowden and Kyle Stainthorpe are set to play with Casey when the VFL kicks off on August 1.

Two suburban players formerly on Casey list. Utility types.

Paul Amy reporting potential signing of Luke Nelson from VFL Richmond Tigers. Fast. Goalkicker. Would be very handy pickup and one to watch for future rookie opportunities.

Big news out of Casey Fields is the possible return of popular Demon ruckman Jake Spencer who has been linked with the club along with North Melbourne VFL defender Ryan Morrison and Richmond VFL small forward Luke Nelson (who was mentioned above by the spirit of Norm Smith).

Casey will have four “home” games in the seven match fixture but they won’t be held at Casey Fields which isn’t available to them. A ground in Frankston is a possible alternative.

Lucky dip: four VFL clubs pick up extra home game

Spencer would be the dominant ruckman in the competition.

Thanks KC. Great news.

Jake was always great with the fans and had a good chat to my youngest son who he remembered from prior 3-4 occasions. He will do a great job in the ruck, help the youngsters and the midfield.  Dees should look at him as a future ruck coaching role.

I was a wrap on Morrison when he played a half dozen games at Casey in 2018. Good solid backman. Disappointed that he shifted across to the Kangas VFL in 2019.

Nelson will be very handy.

still looks a young team but more competitive with Spencer, Hustwaite, Nelson, & Morrison.

Hustwaite , Mutimer, Morrison and Nelson would be trying to impress some AFL recruiters.

Would like to see Casey twist Declan Keilty into the short season return.  And any news on Corey Machaya. He impressed in 2018 before his knee injury in 2019.

Liam Buxton, who was with Casey last year and was signed by Woodville-West Torrens in the SANFL is training with St Kevins in the VAFA A Section after the plug was pulled on the Eastern league where he was going back to Vermont.

This news seems to confirm that Jake Spencer is definitely in Casey’s sights.

Might be worth a phone call to Brandon White, ex Saint who signed on with Beaconsfield footy club for 2020. Local boy who would fit in nicely, with good size (6”3) and speed.

Tim "Bull" Smith is back.

Big news. Great bloke. Had a good chat to him back in 2018. Very easy going.  He was frustrated that his body couldn’t get through a few more games.

He would lift the spirits of the blokes and protect a few youngsters.

Welcome back Bull! Loved him as a player. Competitive and hard, body just let him down unfortunately.

Unless there is a dramatic turn around in Co-vid numbers I doubt this season will go ahead.  A selfish few that couldn't follow rules are going to stuff it up for all return to sport and more importantly the Victorian economy.

Casey Demons secure 12 recruits, including three former AFL Demons

Coach Sam Radford has complimented Casey’s recruiting manager Todd Patterson after the club locked in three former Melbourne players, key forward Tim “Bull” Smith, ruckman Jake Spencer and Patrick McKenna for the coming season starting on 1 August.

With no Melbourne players available, the Casey team is looking strong in the ruck division with Sandringham Dragons recruit Andrew Courtney assisting Spencer.

Key defender Ryan Morrison, another former Casey player, has returned after being drafted by North Melbourne while 2018 Dandenong Stingrays premiership co-captain Campbell Hustwaite and ex-Queenslander Cody Stackelberg come from Collingwood VFL. Others arriving at the club are former Gipplsand Power defender Kyle Reid from Geelong VFL; slippery forward Luke Nelson from Richmond VFL; ex-Dandenong Stingrays defender Daniel Capiron; former Gippsland Power utility Matt McGannon from the NEAFL; Billy Coates from Richmond VFL and St Kevin’s in the VAFA; and Brodie McLaughlin from North Melbourne VFL.

An array of NAB League graduates - Courtney, George Grey, Lachie Lamble, Kyle Yorke (Sandringham Dragons), Luca Goonan, Corey Ellison, Nathan Heath, Jarryd Barker, Liam Scott (Dandenong Stingrays), Ryan Sparkes, Riley Baldi, Tye Hourigan and Josh Smith (Gippsland Power) all joined the club ahead of the season.

Wasn’t McKenna on the coaching panel for the Casey Demons Women’s team?

Some very good recruits. It’s a welcome back to a lot of the ex Gippsland power boys like Capiron, Reid and McGannon.

Stackelberg is a very good young midfielder

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

For a brief period of time in the early afternoon of yesterday, the Casey Demons occupied top place on the Smithy’s VFL table. This was only made possible by virtue of the fact that the team was the only one in this crazy competition to have played twice and it’s 1½ wins gave it an unassailable lead on the other 20 teams, some of who had yet to play a game.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

In my all-time nightmare game, the team is so ill-disciplined that it concedes its first two goals with the courtesy of not one, but two, fifty metre penalties while opening its own scoring with four behinds in a row and losing a talented youngster with good decision-making skills and a lethal left foot kick, subbed off in the first quarter with what looks like a bad knee injury.

After a one-year reprieve, the Demons return down the freeway to Kardinia Park — the site of both one of our greatest triumphs and one of our darkest days — as they face the Cats under Friday night lights. This one could get ugly. Who comes in, and who comes out?
