The Casey Demons will have a practice match on Saturday 14th March 2020 at 11.30am at Casey Fields against Port Melbourne.

That game takes place in the weekend before the start of the season when there are no AFL games played and will give the opportunity to players who have had injury-interrupted pre seasons and are racing against time to get match fit for round 1.

Excellent news for Max and May to get extra game time, especially if they don't make it back for Marsh02 in Tassie next week.

There’s been some interest in the 8 Casey listed players who took part in yesterday’s practice match so we’ve asked KC from Casey for a bit of an update on the players who took part. On what I saw, the club should do well in this year’s VFL competition.

These are the players who were on the list I have been provided:-

(48) Jaxon Briggs — talented small forward with loads of pace. In his fourth season at Casey he played 9 games for the club but showed plenty of improvement in 2019.

(35) Andrew Courtney —  an 18 year old athletic 201cm ruckman/forward out of the Sandringham Dragons via St Bedes who, like many big men of his size, needs to work on his skill set in senior ranks. At last year’s Draft Combine he produced a 94cm running vertical jump, an 81cm standing vertical jump and clocked a three-second flat 20m sprint.

(44) Corey Ellison  — 19 year old, 189cm, 85kg defender from Dandenong Stingrays.

(35) Mitch Lewis — plagued by injuries in his time at Casey but has shown plenty of class in between knee and ankle injuries and concussions. The classy flanker who can play at both ends was restricted to 8 games last season. He has elite running ability (runs  2km in six minutes) and was considered an outside chance for selection in last year’s mid season draft.

(17) Tom McCaffrey — the 25 year old midfielder enters his third season with Casey after playing with the Wondonga Raiders in the Ovens & Murray Football League. He played 3 games with Casey in 2019.

(16) James “Jimmy” Munro — an inspirational, hard tackling veteran, Munro has been a source of constant drive for Casey since transferring from Sandringham. Averaged 21.3 disposals and almost nine tackles from his 18 games last season.

(27) Ryan Sparkes — 18 year old, 185cm, 82kg winger from Gippsland Power also played for Vic Country last year. He works hard, is super competitive, runs all day and takes the game on.

(30) Anthony Vella — the left footer transferred from Port Melbourne last year but was injured and restricted to only five games in 2019.

As far as I’m aware the rule change is -

• VFL clubs will have a development list introduced, made up of 19-year-old players.

• All clubs will be required to play 23 players per match, which will include 1 x 19-year-old development player and 1 x under-21 player (i.e traditional 23rd player).

Thanks KC that makes it clearer.

Paul Amy has tweeted that the Casey Demons have made three good signings from Gippsland Power — Josh Smith, Tye Hourigan and Ryan Sparkes. The Demons are keen to nab a fourth Power graduate in midfielder Riley Baldi who was on the fringe of getting drafted.

Not sure if this is covered off anywhere else, but Paul confirmed that Casey did lock in Baldi.  Really liked what I saw of him at Gippsland, small but a good user and handy near goals.  Was very surprised that neither he nor Sparks ended up on a list.

Eagle eyes who saw part of the Dees prospect rankings on Ep 3 of 'To Hell & Back' will have noticed that we had Sparks ranked at 36 & Baldi at 47. Good chance to have a look and maybe draft then down the track.

Unfortunately, I highly doubt that any of our players will suit of for Casey this year, the AFL club have the resources to isolate players and staff much better than at VFL level. So I can't see that even if the AFL season goes ahead that they'd allow any listed players to play alongside those that aren't in the full time environment.

How are they going to come back to the seniors?

Is it possible that MFC will reside itself at Casey away from the G? It keeps the playing group of both teams together ie isolates them far from the fans

Interesting that Casey Demons are using Twitter and Facebook and MFC website to ask for players to trial.  I think the club is struggling and it will be interesting to see who the new coach will be.  Obviously Dees need to get the coach appointed in the next few weeks by December.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

Demonland's own Whispering Jack was not in attendance but he kicked off proceedings with the following summary of all the Preseason Training action to date. BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
