People have opinions all the time about sports they haven't played. Doesn't make them invalid. There are over 700 accredited media in the AFL and I estimate probably around 70 have played the game. So what? Some are good commentators some are bad.

It works both ways too, jnr.  If people can't be derogatory because they haven't played AFL, how are they able to praise them?  

Going by the earlier logic, if you haven't played AFL then your opinion, good or bad, on all things football is irrelevant.  That would then make all training reports completely irrelevant as no one here, to my knowledge, has played football at AFL level.

Massively appreciate the work you put in mate, even if I don't always agree with some of your views. Just wanted to say I couldn't agree more with this point of yours. We've had a handful of our own blokes this year either take or break or cancel their social media all together, all in the same year they were ridiculed for trying to raise awareness about these issues (banner run through), so hopefully that effort will be part of a journey towards changing some of that language and viciousness aimed at young men and women playing footy.

 Its the nature of the best. And I say thay because I have said some things in the heat of the moment with certain players. After cooling down I do feel bad because at the end of the day they are humans.

Unfortunately it's like the racism issue, you can have all the awareness in the world, but it'll never change. Especially with social media evolving in a remarkable rate.

As @jnrmac said, people can still make opinions regardless if you haven't played AFL. When it gets personal like the Liam Ryan one, then that's just going way out of line.

Yeah, look not trying to prevent criticism, that's all fair, just some of that more personally focused stuff that happens. Awareness certainly does make a difference though. Hearing young men talk about their mental health and having to shut down their social media, which is a HUGE part of being a young person these days, certainly has changed some approaches in people that are decent at the core but just make some bad calls. There will always be people who are just rotten to the core of course, but winning over those in the middle can shift the balance and at least make things more balanced.

Not directing this at you, but I find sometimes that the reasoning of 'it will always happen anyway' a bit of an excuse to just do nothing.

That's not good to hear.  I think I'll miss the 'I hate <insert player name>' comments before they go on to kick 5 goals and be best on ground.  It makes the game day threads interesting!

Nobody minds the opinion Dazzle, it's the way it's expressed. You've got some great views and insights, you do a terrific job bringing our notice to articles in the media and you clearly know your footy.  But the way you express yourself towards others is unnecessarily putrid at times.
