While JV Maxie And Nev are all good choices for either Capt and VC let's please not wipe off or forget Jonesy's CV.

Hasn't  done much wrong in the captaincy stakes that I can think of only query is will he be in our best 22 all season?

Lets leave it as is as the team will always be selected by form, even if it does produce the potential tough decision/s.

Also reckon Tommy Mac has come from behind in the last 2 years to push his leadership Claims, following on his leadership group role in 2017. One for the future.

PS Lever and May aren't bad prospects either!

Hawks won the flag in 2008. VandenBerg was captain for 3 years until he retired at the end of 2007.

Thanks for the clarification about the date but I am sure that he was eased out of the role towards the end.  Effectively his leadership was seen as the end of an era of struggle for the Dorks and the new broom swept through.  Either way I hope that NJ goes a step further than RVB

Who's Jordan Peterson ?

A right wing psychological professor worshipped by basement dwellers who 'destroys' every interviewer he has come across.

Wow that description is so loaded!!!

Peterson is a practicing professor of psychology from Canada who’s clinical experiences has lead him to advocate an “evolutionary psychological” viewpoint on some devisive issues that have become memes in the various ideology and gender debates going on.

His book is well worth a read and his interviews are entertaining.

I will admit that he does make some points that are reasonable; mostly that society encourages over 20 males to live in perpetual adolescence. He is much better when he is made to defend his positions as his open ended interviews can become endless rambling.

However,

* the cult of personality that surrounds him (you can't criticize him legitimately online without an army of pimply teenage edgelords whining about how you have 'taken him out of context')

* the countless clickbait videos of him 'dominating' interviewers and feminists (when really the exchanges are pretty anodyne besides the one with Cathy Newman),

* his posing as the depository of all wisdom when the role of a counselor is merely to be a guide for the client to make their own decisions

* and his parlaying of his academic position into financial gain

make me view him critically.

Anyway, back to the captaincy talk (for fear of getting banned)!

Jones is still a very good player, and will (at worst) be a good player this year.

I see no reason why the captain of the football club needs to be its best player (remember the shock when Buddy was named captain of the All Australian side). Accordingly, there is no reason to get rid of Jones.

The club seemed to do very well with him and Viney last year. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I know the club made a big deal about having a smaller leadership group last year as opposed to the larger groups in previous years but having heard TMac speak to the media on a number of occasions and seen the way he plays I wouldn't mind him slotting back into the leadership group.

I interpreted everything Jones said as being the typical 'media modesty' that gets wheeled out every year.  'I'll put my hand up for the role... what's best for the club... everyone has to earn their spot... no one's an automatic selection for round one...etc."

There's zero chance Viney takes the role as sole-captain after not being able to get on the park consistently since half-way through 2017 and not being able to undertake full training this pre-season.  Whilst Jones isn't the player he used to be, he did have an excellent finish to the season - especially rounds 22 and 23 and also performed well in the finals (except of course for what happened on the 22/09/2018).

One of the highlights of the build up to the finals was hearing the other players in the team talk about the high regards and respect they hold for Jones and his goal again Geelong to start the final term set the stadium alight.  I have no doubt the players will want him as captain.

Jones will likely be captain until his career is over. I would bet my left one that he'd retire with honours (at that seasons end) if it got to the point where he couldn't break into seniors or his body just couldn't take it anymore.

No way he is stripped of his captaincy unless he gives it up.

The Nate/Junior comparison is a flawed one, but the commonality between them is that people skills are/were required in resolving the problems that arose.

Remember that Junior just wasn't sacked as captain. He was also delisted/forced to retire. It wasn't really a decision where both parties sat down and hammered out at resolution favorable to both. The rumor was that he was told on the flight to Adelaide to play Port that 'next week is your last game.' Charming stuff.

I would have thought that the Garry Lyon in '98 solution would have worked best there: give him a year to try to get his body right but get him to consider his role as captain. It's ridiculous that CS and Cuddles didn't think about extending that courtesy to Junior.

Nate will most likely move into a back pocket sooner rather than later. His body has taken a mountain of punishment propping up our 3rd world midfield from 2012-2015. A consultative approach is required here as well. The key difference here is that no one with any footy nous on this board is suggesting that Nate be put out to pasture yet.

I've got no problems with the Viney/Jones joint captaincy. Only problem is a logistical one. Who stands where with Goody on the podium on Grand Final Day and how do 3 people hold aloft one cup?

Two at the handles and the shortest at the base.

Or, like with the dogs, the captain's hold it and Goody stands back, smiling.

Lovely thing to imagine

I am not 'pro' Viney, however, he has demonstrated on all levels that he is ready, hungry & more than capable to go it alone! I feel also that he takes on & 'projects' the team first' role as skipper better than anyone with the exception of Max. Jones, a warrior, no argument, but his focus (to me anyway) has shifted somewhat over the last 2 years away from his tutelage, protection & support of the younger players & has shifted to self preservation & stats driven. Maybe I'm wrong......

Being a relatively young developing list, I have no doubt that the thought of the younger brigade, new recruits etc, is to vote the way they feel is right without upsetting the apple-cart rather than voting for the right man (men) for the job?

Jones may prolong an already well credentialed career even longer with the reduced responsibility that a leadership role brings with it?

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
