Interstaters and other footy travelers - what's the best place to meet someone after the game at the G and then travel to the airport? What's the best place to be picked up (obviously not in an area that traffic is blocked off) and then the best route to the airport? Happy to walk a bit as I have a bit of time up my sleeve.

Last few times I have been to the airport I take the train to Southern Cross (the old Spencer Street station) and then the Skyrail to the airport for $19. There is little to no wait at Southern Cross and the whole thing is pretty seamless.

Uber is your next bet at around $50 and prbably best to meet at the Pullman Hotel (the old Hilton)

I used the Skybus last week to get the airport and work fine. Tram No 70 will get you from the G to Southern Cross Station for no charge. It will take about an hour.

I stay at the Pullman a bit and walk through Fitzroy Gardens -> City -> Southern Cross for the Skybut.  As Jnrmac said it is a seemless and cheap service with departures every 10 mins or so.

SkyBus is pretty easy although you'll have to get to the opposite side of the city coming from the G.

Depends how much time you have but meeting someone on Bourke St would seem logical, could then jump on a tram to Spencer St if the weather is dour.

If you need a Taxi from The MCG there is a  designated Pick up point to the left of Gate 2

If I'm catching a cab, I'll first train it out to Kensington/Flemington way so you're effectively a stones throw to the Tulla. Stopped in at Douta Galla last Sunday for a few pints with me old man before heading to the Airport. However, now with all of the road works it's turned into a fair nightmare and any ideas of a 'clear-ish' run out to the airport are fraught with missing the plane. There's lots of back ways if your cabbie knows their way but again it can be fairly problematic.

Agree that the Skybus is the best option from Spencer street but allow the added time given the roadworks.

Thanks for all the suggestions but I have someone picking me up and taking me to the airport so I really just need the best accessible meeting point that then has good access to get to the airport. I have time up my sleeve so I can walk to a spot away from the ground.

Is that the "free zone" ?

It was a while ago, but the last time I was on the #70 from the G to the city we were told the free zone didn't start till you got to Flinders street and the part behind tennis courts an up Batman ave was still a paid zone.

Has that changed?  Or do they do free "footy special" type services now?

An ok place for a pick up is between AAMI park and Hisense on Olympic Boulevard. Plenty of pull in spots there.

From there follow Olympic Ave > Alexandra Ave > City Rd > Power Street and you're on the Freeway > Citylink

It was free for us last week. We thought the free zone ended at Richmond. Then again we are tourists!
