Yes, first quarter when Garlett nailed someone and then kicked a goal from the free.  Most of the time though they just waltzed around our players and got the ball away. It was enough to make you cry. I did.

People who defend our ability to tackle in recent weeks clearly don't watch the game closely.

Tackling has been poor outside the contest for a while now.  Inside the contest, we tackle and lock down well.  However, a player on the outside is put 'under pressure' rather than tackled.  Seems weak, and looks shyte when oppo players step through the 'pressure' and get a clean pass away.

Even worse in the Norf game, Max double handed ruck taps straight to Norf players, who had NO PRESSURE and waltzed away from clearances.  Better to have no ruck, and start an inside contest - at least we compete in there.

We need to hit and stick tackles.  It seems like a lack of commitment to the tackle (like they dont want to be caught out of their 'position' in the structure, so dont commit to the tackle as it will put them out of where they are 'supposed' to be). Starting to look a bit bruise free.  When we are totally out-marked, this just makes the reverse transition so much easier for the opposition.

Gotta hit them, stick the tackles, and get the ball back.  Minding space and 'pressuring' is for netball.

Watch the end of the Eagles game. Twice in the last two minutes Max hit the ball over the top to running Demons. Worked brilliantly.

But.

Only an idiot opposition coach would not have gone to school on those taps. Scott would have instructed his on-ballers to block our running lanes so that Max's taps didn't enable us to saunter away from the ruck contests. Hinckley backed Port to win from Ryder; Scott backed North to win from Max.

Yes there were other things that caused the loss and here are a few of them.

Dumb football, lack of pace and poor disposal, yet again ( my hobbyhorse ). 

Handball madness on a windy day. ANB handballing twice on the 50 for certain goals when Garlett was free and then TMac was free ahead, both handballs misdirected to North. Petracca refusing to kick ( 2 kicks and 17 handballs and 3 holding the ball as a result ). Players handballing to players in worse positions, when a kick clears the pack and creates the play.

Garlett and Tom Mac missing set shots from 5 and 10 metres respectively.

Hogan getting injured.

Disgraceful umpiring again in the last quarter. 8 frees to nil. About 5 blatant frees to us not paid some a few metres from our goal. 

Hopeless diposal from some, especially Tyson, the turnover king of the AFL. Plenty of ball and nearly always turned it over. Disgraceful. Forget his possessions, he was one of North's best players yesterday. He is a real problem.

Can you explain why a player with a gale behind him, running to 50 with the footy, looks sideways for a team mate and then handballs, usually poorly, creating the chance for the turnover when he can score with a kick? It is dumb football and just madness.

Players not going to the goal line to defend and be able to come forward to the ball, when Brown or other North players, were having a shot from a fair way out. At least 2 goals were scored by North this way, when a player on the goal line would have marked the ball or at least rushed a point. 

The Coaches not reacting to our play and North's.

An inability to play the ground, as Goodwin conceded.

Lack of pace generally. Unfortunately this will see JT not being selected for us again. Great guy who can't run. I felt sorry for him as he jogged around, a shadow of his former self.

Lack of a champion to lift the side.

Poor games by Viney and Watts our leaders and several others like Hannan, ANB.

Apparent lack of desperation needed given what we were playing for.

The above were some of the reasons we lost.

Tackling is all about attitude, and our attitude on Saturday stunk. A week earlier our tackling was excellent. We are a team that relies on everybody doing their bit, and there were far too many passengers this week.

I'm still a firm believer that there is a technique issue as well.

The biggest issue is we don't plant our feet and wait for the player with the ball to move. Instead, we just lunge straight at the player with the ball who simply has to shuffle to the side slightly to avoid our outstretched arms.

Jetta and Hannan are the best from Melbourne at avoiding tackles because they have mastered the subtle sidestep.
