Can Jarrod Poort hang on?

Over 1 minute and 16 seconds in front after 5k completed of the 10k open water marathon

Lets hope so Macca. It's a pretty handy lead.

I'd actually wondered what had happened to Poort? Remember he was our only entrant in the 1500 back in London and then never heard of again. Wasn't at trials earlier this year.

Well that questions now been answered. He's made the switch to open water, and it may bear some serious fruit!

We should know within about another 25min.

Caught by the pack ... brave effort all the same.

Let's hope he's got a final kick.

Edit: What a finish that was!  They swim 10,000 metres and it's a blanket finish between a dozen swimmers.

Looks like the dutch swimmer touched out the Greek at the end who actually got to the wall first, but was slow to touch.

A great swim by Poort. Just didn't have anything left for the last 1.5km.

Gold to Australia's Tom Burton in the sailing. Well done son!

Gold medal number 7 for Australia. One more to equal our output in London.

Meanwhile our terrible run with the team sports continues, with the Opals shock 2 point losers to Serbia. Some poor umpiring, however we turned the ball over constantly and missed to many easy shots. First time our women have failed to medal since Barcelona 92'.

So well done tlo Penny Taylor on a brilliant career. We'll be much worse without you.

Sailing silver for Aussie cousins Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin in Nacra 17 at Rio Games

Quote

The good news was the Sydneysiders rose from fourth to second to win the Nacra 17 class on Guanabara Bay.

The frustration came with the fact that they were just one miserly point away from becoming the First Australians to win gold in the multi-hulled class at the Games, sailed as a mixed event for the first time these Games.

Australia’s Tom Burton wins gold in Laser class sailing at Rio Olympics

Quote

In order to win gold, Burton needed to finish five boats ahead of Stipanovic, who in-turn only needed to sit on the 25-year-old Australian’s tail to claim his maiden gold medal.

But in a stunning piece of water sport and sailing on the start line, Burton dropped under the Croation’s guard, forcing Stipanovic to react by chasing hard and ultimately hitting the Australian’s Laser.

Stipanovic was forced into a penalty turn, leaving Burton to sprint and race to achieve the greatest moment of his career.

Kim Mickle, that's one of the toughest things I've seen on a sporting arena.

Poor girl has dislocated her shoulder when throwing the Javelin,  and has still thrown it over 55 meters.

Olympics over, but she's certainly given that everything she has.

Ella Nelson, future star of Australian athletics!

Ran a PB off limited preparation and has only just missed out on making the final.

Watch out for her at the Comm Games in 2018 to really announce herself on a bigstage!

Medal chances are dwindling but while there's life there's hope ... the men's 470 in the sailing are guaranteed a bronze medal and might be able to advance to the silver whilst Brooke Stratton can medal in the long jump if she can find her best form.

And of course the Boomers have a chance of advancing to the semi finals if they can defeat Lithuania.

Your right Macca, not too many medal chances left that i can think of.

The Boomers are playing very well, but have never won a medal and are playing an elimination match tonight against a team I've never seen us beat. In fact have very strong memories of them beating us for Bronze at both Atlanta 96' & Sydney 00'.

Jarred Talent is up for the 50km walk on friday night I believe.

Both Caroline Buchanan & Ken Wallace kick off their campaigns tonight in the BMX &  Canoe respectively.

And Alana Boyd the two time Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist would give herself a chance at medaling in the womens Pole Vault final saturday morning.

Otherwise lets hope our sailors can keep saving our bacon with some more medals or we may come through with something in the women's golf which also starts tonight.

Fairly sure Wallace is part of the K2 & the K4 crews so there's a couple of chances there ... we're still in the equestrian individual jumping but a medal would surprise.  The Triathlons? How about the women's 20k walk?

I'll take any coloured medal now but I reckon our best chances for gold are Jared Tallent in the walk & Caroline Buchanan in the women's BMX.  The Men's 470 tonight would have to finish 7 clear places in front of Croatia and also finish in front of Greece to secure gold.

I'm really hoping Brooke Stratton can be at her best tomorrow morning ... if she does that and can equal her PB, she should get a medal.  Fingers crossed.

All up we've probably got another 10 medal chances but that's counting the Boomers, Stratton and the 49ers sailing tomorrow.

I'll remain optimistic until it's beaten out of me TD

After all, the Demons are now a realistic chance for the finals - whooda thunk-it!

The Boomers. Ultimate team performance! 90-64 victory.

Justlike the Dees, dare to dream!

Next up in a semi final, Croatia or France. Two teams we've beaten before and are capable of beating again.

Yes, well done to the Boomers ... a realistic chance for the final now.  It's interesting that we've had 5 of our teams all lose Q/F's at these Olympics - it could be that those Q/F's are the hardest games to win in each team sport.

Sometimes it goes that way in sport in terms of mindset, attitude & being completely switched on.  The opposition are nearly always going to be strong too by the Q/F stage.

Anyway, the sailing was postponed last night so we're now in with 2 chances for medals in tomorrow's program ...

Outside chance for a medal with Melissa Wu in the 10m platform diving (currently 4th) whilst we're also in the hunt for a medal in the canoe double sprint.

Our sailors could bring in 2 more medals but again, gold is unlikely ... we're assured of at least the bronze in the 470 class whilst we can move to silver in the 49ers (the New Zealand crew are already assured of the gold in the 49ers)

n.b.  The Boomers play Serbia in a semi final on Saturday morning ... 8.00am AEST

Bronze for Australia in the K2 1000 to Wallace/Tame.

Close to within 2 bronze medals of our Barcelona haul.

Well done guys on coming through for bronze. Were challenged and held on tough.

Thought they were gone but they fought back well ... the German & Serbian crews were clearly superior so it was an excellent effort.  Well done to Lachie & Ken!

I still reckon we'll get 5-7 more medals from about 10 possible/probable chances ...

  • Sailing x 2 (1 guaranteed medal and a very good chance for another)
  • BMX women's & men (both with a real show)
  • Boomers (1 more win will do it)
  • 50k walk for men (Tallent should medal)
  • Women's diving 10m platform - Melissa Wu (bronze at best?)
  • K4 1000 kayak (possible)
  • Equestrian individual jumping (outside chance)
  • Alana Boyd in the women's pole vault (if Alana is at her absolute best)

Where we've really missed out are the team events, cycling and the rowing.  Many will point to the swimming but the projections were quite unrealistic in my eyes.  3 or 4 more medals in the pool with 1 or 2 more gold was a more realistic target.

The optimistic medal tally projections from those who supposedly know was way way over the top but I reckon our lack of funding as opposed to many other nations is going to relegate us to where we sit now.  I can remember saying the same thing 4 years ago ... other nations have caught us and gone straight past us (esp the UK)

The concern is that we could slip further behind - we've got some catching up to do and as I've stated before, we could learn a lot from the Brits. Enrolling our track & field athletes into USA universities is an option too.  Our track & field athletes and swimmers could do with more regular competition.

Despite all that I've really enjoyed the games and I'm not anywhere near as disappointed with the outcomes as many others are.  The results we're seeing was my realistic view ... as opposed to my optimistic view

Think the general view will come down to these last few days and if we can snag a few more medals where you've listed.

In the article i pasted earlier, i note the AOC's projection was 37 medals (only 2 more then London), but with 13 gold (compared to the 8 we won in London). I think if we can snag two more gold medals (big ask i know), even if we only end with a grand total of 30-32 medals, i think people would see it as a win as we've improved the gold number.

A big one for the public i think will be the Boomers in the basketball. If they could pull off a miracle and win gold like they keep saying is their goal (don't think they will). Then that will put a whole different spin on people's perspective. Certainly helps with it being on the last day of competition also.

I can see the Boomers making the final and I suppose anything can happen on the day if we do make it.  But the Americans have another gear or 2 and we're likely to see it.

Still, it's fantastic to be part of the conversation much like it is with the Demons.  Dare to dream indeed TD.

footnote: if Tallent gets beaten into silver by another Russian he may get the gold later on (again) ... that would be funny.

Disappointing to see Patterson knocked out in the high jump qualifying. Still she's very young, already won a Comm Games Gold Medal and has at least two more Olympics ahead of her you'd think.

Not wanting to be a smart ar$e, but she might want to think about moving from Leongatha to get some better training under her belt.

I'm sorry Kitty, but you treat grown adults like your 15 year old school children, then it's no wonder you have athletes breaking the ridiculous rules.

These are young athletes, who have spent the best part of 4 years working towards this fortnight. And then once their events are done and they head out to blow off some steam, instead of doing it in the village disturbing athletes who are still competing. And as a result of this you ban them from attending the closing ceremony.

Pretty sure Palmer would have learnt his lesson, and think there would be some sort of other punishment that could have been dished out to McKeon.

Kitty 'Margaret Thatcher' Chiller has gone a bit to far here for mine.

This could help us put extra funding into the sports and move back up the medal tally for a few games.

Simply host another games!

2024 Player Reviews: #1 Steven May

The years are rolling by but May continued to be rock solid in a key defensive position despite some injury concerns. He showed great resilience in coming back from a nasty rib injury and is expected to continue in that role for another couple of seasons. 2024 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

It was another strong season from McVee who spent most of his time mainly at half back but he also looked at home on a few occasions when he was moved into the midfield. There could be more of that in 2025. Once again the club’s top goal scorer but he had a few uncharacteristic flat spots during the season and the club will be looking for much better from him in 2025. 2024 Player Reviews: #18 Jake Melksham

After sustaining a torn ACL in the final match of the 2023 season Jake added a bit to the attack late in the 2024 season upon his return. He has re-signed on to the Demons for 1 more season in 2025. Date of Birth: 12 August 1991 Height: 186cm Games MFC 2024: 8 Career Total: 229 Goals MFC 2024: 8 Career Total: 188

2024 Player Reviews: #3 Christian Salem

The luckless Salem suffered a hamstring injury against the Lions early in the season and, after missing a number of games, he was never at his best. He was also inconvenienced by minor niggles later in the season. This was a blow for the club that sorely needed him to fill gaps in the midfield at times as well as to do his best work in defence. 2024 Player Reviews: #39 Koltyn Tholstrop

The first round draft pick at #13 from twelve months ago the strongly built medium forward has had an impressive introduction to AFL football and is expected to spend more midfield moments as his career progresses. 2024 Player Reviews: #42 Daniel Turner

The move of “Disco” to a key forward post looks like bearing fruit. Turner has good hands, moves well and appears to be learning the forward craft well. Will be an interesting watch in 2025. 2024 Player Reviews: #8 Jake Lever

The Demon’s key defender and backline leader had his share of injuries and niggles throughout the season which prevented him from performing at his peak.  Date of Birth: 5 March 1996 Height: 195cm Games MFC 2024: 18 Career Total: 178 Goals MFC 2024: 1 Career Total: 5

2024 Player Reviews: #13 Clayton Oliver

Lack of preparation after a problematic preseason prevented Oliver from reaching the high standards set before last year’s hamstring woes. He carried injury right through the back half of the season and was controversially involved in a potential move during the trade period that was ultimately shut down by the club.
