A talking point from today that had slipped my mind until now was the decision to withdraw Cam McEvoy from the 4 x 200m squad to rest him for the 100m Freestyle final.

McEvoy's replacement Daniel Smith swam a good second plus slower then the other relay members. Having McEvoy instead could have secured a bronze or silver instead of 4th.

I hope Cam wins gold in the 100m Freestyle tomorrow so the end justify the means.

Yep, a calculated gamble that might just pay off TD ... if we were a realistic chance to win the 4 x 200m then I wouldn't agree with the tactic.  I don't want to play down the value of a silver or bronze medal in any event but if McEvoy wins the 100m by a small margin then the end result will almost certainly justify the means.

The winner of the blue-riband event in the pool has a certain sparkle to it ... we haven't won the 100m freestyle for men since Michael Wenden* won in 1968.  I'm happy to take the path we've taken.

As it stands Kyle Chalmers has also got a huge chance as well - he's 18 years old with it all in front of him.  In racing terms he 'could surprise'.  Kyle is the son of Brett Chalmers the footballer.

*Michael Wenden also won the 200m freestyle gold at the 1968 games.

Sharks win! ... defeated Japan 8 - 6

Back in the tournament now with a 1 - 1 - 1 record.  Next up is Serbia then Greece but both are tough matches.  One more win might be enough to make the quarter finals but apart from Japan, the other 4 teams in our group are all in contention.

Appears as though the Rio weather has played havoc with the Rio schedule.

Rowi g abandoned, so we need to wait a bit longer for another gold there. The cyclists having a tough time of things in the time trial, and it appears that Bawden & Clancy's beach volleyball ball also got brought forward an hour.

Touch wood, but the girls are currently tracking ok. Lets hope they have the same success the sharks earlier today.

Great win from Bawden & Clancy in their final beach volleyball pool match against their higher fancied dutch pair to win 27-25, 18-21, 16-14 which should see them get a more favorable draw for the Round of 16.

Great win from Australia mens Rugby 7's over world number 2 South Africa which gets them into the Quarter Finals.

Not sure exactly what time they play yet, or who it will be. But it will be anytime from 6am I believe.

From what i can tell, they'll likely either play South Africa again or potentially Fiji.

Hockeyroos get a much needed confidence boosting 6-1 win over India.

Wont be as easy against Argentina next up for them, but they need a result there to avoid finishing 4th in their group and copping Netherlands in a quarter final.

Looks as though the Australian Mens Rugby 7's team will likely be on at 7:30am v South Africa. This will be confirmed within the hour however pending the last couple of group results.

Failing the 7:30am start time, it will be 6:00am v one of Fiji, USA or Argentina, but it's still TBC.

Confirm 7:30am match v South Africa in the Rugby 7's. Nice lead in to the Boomers v Dream Team match.

Interesting that in the final pool match Fiji defeated USA 24-19. If USA had of converted their 3rd try or managed another try for the upset win then it would have eliminated New Zealand. Instead with Fiji winning by more then 3 points they've booked themselves a quarter final against the Kiwis.

Good to see there's no tanking, but surely Fiji must have thought long and hard about the potential benefit of conceding a try right at the end.

Our 2nd womens beach volleyball team of Laird & Del Solar have been eliminated, loosing their 3rd straight group match, this time to China.

Clancy & Bawden left to carry the flag with our beach volleyball hopes from here in.

Mens Rugby 7's unable to repeat their win over South Africa and have been knocked out in the quarter finals.

The loss to France first up cost them a much nicer draw come the quarter finals.

Great effort by the boomers, however giving up over 20 offensive rebounds and some great shooting by Carmelo Anthony & Kyrie Irvine saw the Boomers go down 88-98.

Hope they use that as fuel to push on for a medal now. They got two seemingly easier games coming up against China & Venezuela that they need to make sure they win to keep the momentum up. They may also use it to rest Bogut as much as they can given his come back from injury and he looked very lethargic towards the end of the match.

Meanwhile the Kookaburra's are 0-0 at half time against Great Britain. Lets hope they can get a win there to get themselves back in form.

Kookaburra's get a much needed 2-1 victory over Great Britain and break a 15  quarter goalless drought while at it.

Hopefully this victory will be the shot in the arm they need to get going again. Next match against Brazil should be a training run and then they can move onto the quarter finals.

Much needed wins by both hockey teams ... the Q/F match-ups will be interesting assuming both teams advance.

Having tough match-ups is not always a bad thing in knockout situations unless we are clearly outmatched.

You've got to beat good teams to win the whole thing anyway and big wins on the way to a final are quite often a good thing.

Madeline Groves wins our first silver of the games in the 200m Fly. Touched out by .03 of a second. Great swim by the girl swimming a PB in an Olympic final.

Feel for McEvoy swimming more then a second slower then his best and finishing 7th, but handled himself with class. This result was a bit like Jodie Henry (one of my favourites) up staging Libby Lenton at Athens in 2004.

Now it seems withdrawing McEvoy from the 4 x 200m relay has cost us silver or bronze. But it's all academic now. Congratulations to Chalmers, and lets hope the womens 4 x 200m relay team can also cause a boilover later on for another gold.

Rio 2016: Madeline Groves wins Olympic silver in 200 metres butterfly

Quote

She briefly gave away swimming in her late teens and even after returning she struggled with injury and health issues, which were holding her back from realising her enormous potential.

Groves had appeared to be tiring but she found renewed energy in the final 50 metres to take the fight up to Belmonte Garcia, while Japan's world champion and eventual bronze medallist Natsumi Hoshi was also in contention.

Aussie women’s relay team win silver as Katie Ledecky powers USA to gold medal

Leah Neale, Emma McKeon, Bronte Barratt and Tamsin Cook put in a sensational effort to lead into the final leg before Ledecky stormed home for the Americans who were the pre-race favourites.

Thanks for the run down again Macca.

I don't want to jinx anything, but this could be a huge 15 hours coming up with Australia genuine gold medal chances in up to 7 events.

The mens quad sculls and coxless pair in rowing. Jess Fox in the kayak, mens cycling sprint team and then in the pool, Mitch Larkin, the Campbell sisters and even Taylor McKewan who qualified fastest in the 200m breaststroke in a field she shouldn't fear.

Not saying we'll win all 7, it could be 0. But every reason to feel optimistic we coukd be knocking on the door of around 10 gold by stumps on Day 6, or at least equalling what we got in London!

I love your optimism TD ... I just like the idea that we're a chance in so many events.

Every time we win gold must lift the moral of the whole team ... so much at this level is above the shoulders and there's often a fine line between winning and just missing out on a medal altogether.  Attitude is everything - look at the Boomers, they've got it in spades and I don't reckon they'll let up with that attitude.

Kyle Chalmers winning today will be a tremendous fillip for the entire squad.

My best chance tonight and/or tomorrow morning ... women's 100m freestyle - Cate Campbell.

The years are rolling by but May continued to be rock solid in a key defensive position despite some injury concerns. He showed great resilience in coming back from a nasty rib injury and is expected to continue in that role for another couple of seasons. It was another strong season from McVee who spent most of his time mainly at half back but he also looked at home on a few occasions when he was moved into the midfield. The luckless Salem suffered a hamstring injury against the Lions early in the season and, after missing a number of games, he was never at his best. The Demon’s key defender and backline leader had his share of injuries and niggles throughout the season which prevented him from performing at his peak.  Date of Birth: 5 March 1996 Height: 195cm Games MFC 2024: 18 Career Total: 178 Goals MFC 2024: 1 Career Total: 5

2024 Player Reviews: #13 Clayton Oliver

Lack of preparation after a problematic preseason prevented Oliver from reaching the high standards set before last year’s hamstring woes. He carried injury right through the back half of the season and was controversially involved in a potential move during the trade period that was ultimately shut down by the club.
