Does anyone know what that new rule means?

Is that when the umpires lines up the free-kicker with the middle of the goals??

As in they will only do this when there is a free kick or mark in the forward 50.

Maybe relenting on the player having to come around directly in line, behind the mark to dispose of ball? Except in the forward 50?

Who knows, and TBH they will stuff up interpreting this across each game so none of us will know what happened then it will be hailed a success! Yay AFL!

I love the way the headline says the new rules explained and then the article completely fails to explain what this rule even is, let alone the change to it!

Would it kill them to just leave the bloody game alone for ONE YEAR?

All these stupid rule changes achieve is more confusion and more issues which need further rule changes.

The issue is that the AFL has a Laws of the Game Committee (aka a rules committee). If you have a rules committee, there will be new rules every year, because that's what the committee's job is. If the AFL were to scrap the "Laws of the Game Committee", all of this crap would be easily eliminated.

Unfortunately, being a boys club where everyone gets to hire their mates on cushy six-figure salaries for basically zero return, this will never happen.

Deliberate out of bounds is another interesting one, I hate when someone kicks it 30-40 metres then it bounces at rights angles and goes over the line.

Stop simplifying things you're making too much sense.

All we (the fans) want is consistency with interpretation and yes, leave the bloody things alone.

Now this law applies to players called Mark. If they mark the ball the umpire will blow the whistle and call Mark's mark and mark the line in line where the mark was taken and a mark at the line of the goals . This of course is the new Mark's mark rule Mark-2 not to be confused with Mark's mark rule Mark-1. Though that rule left its mark on the game a line was put through it for this season and revised into mark-2.

Should more than one mark attempt to mark the ball  then the two players will line up on the mark of the mark that the marks attempted to mark the ball. This line will mark the line between the marks  trying to mark the ball and the marked line of the goals.

if three marks should attempt a mark then all bets are off and mark my words we'll line up the rule makers and make them mark the ball instead. Mark my words !!

So any other rules needing clarification ??

Nup, covered it reMARKably well

I can only hope it means that the player standing on the mark has to actually STAND RIGHT ON THE SPOT.  No lateral movement.  It would require more stringent and quicker calling of play on but would improve ball movement and open up downfield and the corridor substantially.

But the player with the ball can wander off? Or like Franklin approach at an angle and kick around the man on the mark?

Perhaps if the player with the ball deviates from the line it should be play on or is that a different rule?  This  http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2016-02-18/2016-nab-challenge-explained#sthash.C1fJgooJ.dpuf  certainly does not explain the rule.

AFL Rules - Mark Rules - How to Kick after a Mark 16.3.2 Rules of the game

NB:-  Rules of the game do not mention The line of the mark.

No, I said it would require a tightening of how quick they call play on for deviating off the line.  Shots a t goal would probably have to be an exception unless attitudes in that regard changed.

Also, no team-mate of the player with the ball can go anywhere near the position of the mark to shepherd once play on is called.

Seems like a lot of trouble to go to for the five players called Mark. Would it extend through to the two Marc's and the Marcus?

Maybe we should have held on to the Russian just to get the benefit of this rule (if there actually is one)
