Jake Barrett

I haven't seen much of him but I can't see him being much of an upgrade over the Michie's and Newton's of the world.

Nup.....

Purely by name association. No Barrett's allowed, would automatically think of 'purple' every time I see his name and would need to cut my wrists multiple multiple times, I'm not ready for that

Depends, If you look at Jake and aren't automatically filled with an urge to inflict violence upon him, then he's probably no relation to Purple.

It looks like he has good bloodlines as he's a cousin of Hawks' premiership player Luke Breust. Why not keep it in the family and make a play for both of them?

Dream on jack. Who do we give the hawks for Breust?

Don't think we'd have the list space to take him as a DFA, so would need to either unload a contracted player (can't see that happening) or wait and see if we could rookie him. GWS have committed to taking him again as a rookie, but our first pick is before there's so if we were looking at him I'd say it'll be in the rookie draft. From what I've seen I wouldn't be opposed, although he plays in a position where we have covered pretty well.

I think you will find that NightCrawler has already made a number of astute observations about him on the Delisted Free Agents thread - see below.

The only thing that I would add is that if we were keen, then you would have thought we would have tried to deal for him as well when it came to the McKenna trade.

Basically, if he's smart, he'd knock back any offer we made him because he would be about No.10 in line to play as an inside mid for us and there are a lot of other clubs where he could get a game next year way more easily.

Barrett has been told he will be picked up by GWS as a rookie.

He has been in great form in the NEAFL this year. Big possession winner, high tackle numbers. Good clearance player.

I would love it if we scooped and used our first rookie pick on him. I think a club will take him as a DFA though. We would have a hard time attracting him when he would be behind all our other inside mids.

I find that a strange opinion from NC then. He reckons he wouldn't get a game in our midfield but he would in GWS'? Surely, he's actually got a better chance of breaking into our midfield than GWS', which at this point is superior...

In a choice between Selection 84 and Barrett I'd take him everytime.  Though I agree we might be lucky to attract him.  He's related to Breust and has a number of relatives playing NRL (he was the player with the highest tackle count in the NEAFL last year so I guess that's where he gets it from).  A guy with good bloodlines, 184 and 80kgs and can run with high possession count.  I don't see the downside although there's nothing said on the website what his disposal is like.

That wasn't the point I was making.

He is 20 years old and playing very well in NEAFL. If he does take up an offer from a rival club it would be because they would offer him senior game time. We need outside class and speed. He is not that type of player. We have heaps of his type already and he would need to bide his time at Casey next year.

So his options would

1. Stay at GWS and fight to win a game.

2. Come to the Dee's and fight to win a game.

3. Go to another club who can guarantee him senior game time.

It would be option 1 or 3 in my opinion.

Our inside mids are one of our greatest strengths. I haven't the time right now for a full analysis. But we stack up well vs GWS in this area. It's their outside speed and depth where we fall behind.

Don't be fooled though. Our best 22 is close in talent to theirs and we should be able to knock them off again next year.
