The way Hogan protects his team mate as much as he can and cleans up Malceski is brilliant. Then because Newton was going across him he gets the best of May.

It might just be me but Hogan doesn't even lose his feet entirely. It's brilliant.

Newton isn't quite a complete player. I want to see a bit more run from him as he's not the biggest or fastest midfielder so he'll need a high work rate. But I love his toughness, he laid a great tackle at one stage. And he gets collected here and only a few minutes later gets collected backing back for another mark. That's serious courage when you've been cleaned up once and you aren't afraid to have it happen again.

Yeah, first thing I noticed was he was the heaviest crunched but first to his feet.

Well boys ...and girls.. since I'm heading off at 530, the squeeze has suggested an "early night" .. wink wink ...nudge nudge!!

Hopefully the ipad will be my friend tomorrow and I'll check in.

'Akum' suggested on the changes thread that we might rotate our talls through the interchange ... Hogan, Frost, Dawes, Watts & Jamar could all be rotated (perhaps a 4-6 minute spell depending on who it is)

Jamar might only need 5 minutes bench time 2 or 3 times in the game and he could also spend some time forward - not sure how that would all work in with the midfield rotations (which would be down to 2 interchange unless we decided to go with all 5 talls on the field for blocks of time as well)

The idea has merit ... rotating the roles of our tall forwards keeps the opposition on their toes and can create confusion and mis-matches. I've long felt that Roos likes his talls to play as utilities and/or be more versatile (Pedersen was used this way last season and was reasonably effective) Of course Roos himself was a gun utility.

vandenBerg could be added to the aforementioned other 5 as he looks like he can play tall to good effect.

Griffin needs to be tagged, and the rest can just play accountable football.

Their midfield has a good mix of inside and outside, which ours has massively improved on, but we still need a little bit more polish.

We have a better back line and forward line in my opinion and if we can break even through the midfield we will win. Simple

Cross will probably go with Griffin and as you say the rest can play accountable.

I'm hoping they send Viney again, cross could be far too slow for Griffin on the outside

I'd wait until you're sober and reassess in the morning BD.

* I admire your optimism though.

BarnDee nailed it last week (here) with his 26 point predicted victory ^_^

I think Griffen may be a bit to tall for Viney, Cross is pretty cagey and not so easy to get on the outside.

He towelled up a couple of good runners in Brandon Ellis and Jackson McRae last year, younger players yes but players you would have thought could easily expose Cross. They didn't.

Let Viney run a bit and maybe make him accountable for someone like Shiel.

Yeh I see where you are coming from, I just think Viney won't be exposed by the height difference due to Griffin not being strong over head.

That said Cross will make someone earn every touch they have, although I think he is noticeably slower from last season already. Cross intrigues me as a player, someone who must do everything incredibly well considering he has been on lists for nearly 15 years and has quite poor foot skills

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
