Match Day Experience - time to lift our game

Featured Replies

The most interesting thing about the AFL wishing to improve the matchday experience at the ground is the implied admission that not only has the AFL forgotten about the fans but that the television networks have not delivered benefits to the AFL beyond the admittedly valuable cash provided. It's not beyond a reasonable expectation from the AFL that TV rights holders should be doing their bit to improve the TV viewing experience in order to encourage more people to experience the game live. Channel 7 has clearly failed in that regard.

You mean you don't enjoy watching standard definition games with poorly timed replays and annoying commentary?

Was right in that Wellington Rd mix RD. Lesson learnt.

Ah... Wellington Road brings back memories of VFL Park and some of our better performances under Northey.

And the peace and quiet to savor the atmosphere, and actually chat during the breaks.

All this before "marketing" took over and ridiculous jargon such as "match day experience" crept into the lexicon.

How about "having a great day with friends at the footy" instead.

I would love to have more recent triumphs to remember on Wellington Parade and the G

As I've posted before, I also don't like being given only a limited number of teams to view on free to air TV, irrespective of their quality.

You have to go easy on them LDC. I read that some day soon every traditional free to air station will have multiple digital stations, so they'll be able to play all the games on free to air every week!

In the meantime, you have to live in the now. 1993.

there are 4 games on fta tv

x 22 rounds

x 2 teams/game

that makes 176 "slots" per year

that means each team should get approx 10 viewings per year

of course that relies on some equity

anything less then clubs, supporters and sponsors are being dudded financially

Try living in NSW . They never fail to broadcast GWS and Sydney games, which doesn't leave much for the other games.

how many fta afl games do you get per week in sydney, sue?

we get about 1 fta nrl (i think) game per week here (plus the three soo games)

only seem to get storm when an away game and not always then

I hope the rumours about Google wanting to buy the streaming rights are correct.

We can just stream high def youtube on whatever device we want.

I'll never buy foxtel. All I want is to watch the Melbourne games, but I have to pay for all the crap that comes with it.

But will the streamed product be provided free of charge to the consumer? That's the bit that matters most.

Usually 4. Rarely 5 with an 11:30pm slot. On teh QB weekend it is 5 because of the game v C'wood thank goodness. You can check it anywhere in teh country on the AFL website under Broadcast guide.

From what I've read, it's not clear. My best guess would be some sort of advertising as opposed to a paid subscription. Google is primarily an advertising company after all.

I paid for Telstra's AFL streaming service last year, but the quality was awful. Did the trail week this year and it hadn't changed.

They use the excuse that Telstra only have the streaming rights for mobile devices, and thus don't bother with higher resolutions. But it looks [censored] on a 10 inch tablet, and even that's a lot smaller than what I'd want to watch the footy on.

Even the smart replays aren't in high def.

It's my opinion that the AFL, Foxtel, Telstra and Channel 7 are deliberately not making high-quality live on-demand AFL available in order to preserve the status quo. They know as soon as that genie is out of the bottle that there's no going back. Foxtel in particular loses its best service offering if people can stream live AFL over the net. It has very little to offer other than live sport. You just have to look at how much market share Netflix has gained in the last few months to see that the market is already primed for this type of content delivery.

Crap? You've obviously never seen such gems as Off the Deep End - Insane Pools, which is one of the best series I've ever seen about insane pools ever. There's also Airplane Repo, where they pretend to break into airports to repossess light aircraft, or even better, intercept them while flying at 30,000 feet.

Please tell me Airplane Repo isn't really a thing.

I'm still struggling with the news that Channel 7's cat show pulled 1.5 million viewers.

As if the MFC hadn't sucked all the hope I had for humanity out of me, now TV does this to me.

Why did you betray me TV? Why?

There's also Demonland. But I'm not sure what that might do for anybody's faith in fellow humans.

depends whether your "faith" is positive or negative to begin with :lol:

In almost all cases, I'd say it's pretty detrimental.

However, the last few pages of the Essendon drugs thread is pretty glorious. Comparing Mr Hird with various tragic literary figures was pretty great.

I also quite enjoy BBO and Moonshadow's bromance. I really hope the two of them can finally make it together and adopt that problem orphan Stuie.

While I can understand why we've chosen 'Hells Bells' by AC/DC to welcome the team onto the ground, after yesterday's performance, I think it's time we switched brothers from Angus and Maclolm Young to their older brother George. We should replace 'Hells Bells' with 'Sorry' by the Easybeats instead. That way the club can apologise for their performance at the same time as we have a band name more reflective of our team.

Dear Gillon McLachlan

If you are wondering why the crowd at the Melbourne v GWS game was the lowest for an AFL game ever at Etihad, let me help you out:

  • Melbourne members and supporters keep telling you (both in writing and by their absence) that they object to home games at Etihad
  • it was Fathers Day
  • 1.10 pm on a Sunday...which was Father's Day. Seriously?

Stop blaming Melbourne supporters and remember your own comments about match day experience. The supporters are telling you what they want. Stop trying to dictate to the supporters what you want from them

Easier to just blame the Melbourne supporters LDC. I'm pretty sure it's in the 'AFL Employees Handbook' given out at every staff induction. Right under 'The AFL do not make mistakes, fans only misinterpret decisions' and 'AFL doubleplus good'.

My family asked me what I wanted for Father's Day. I said "I want'a watch"....so they let me. That's how I got to go on Sunday. Time to myself to go and watch the Dees win - best Father's Day present ever. I love my family, they're the best.

If I'd told my family "I wanna watch" they would have given me one.

We're going to keep getting games at Etihad.

Each of Melbourne, RIchmond, Collingwood and Hawthorn, the four MCG tenants, was given a home game at Etihad (Collingwood even had two).

There are a certain number of games that have to be played at Etihad every year. St Kilda, the Dogs and North Melbourne are all tenants but all sell games interstate/overseas, which then need to be made up by MCG clubs.

Worse, Carlton wants to shift home games from Etihad to the G. They'll get that request, I'm sure, because they're Carlton, which will only serve to require further games to be hosted at Etihad. Unless Essendon stops hosting us at the G, or unless the Dogs or Saints stop selling home games (which isn't going to happen given current financial circumstances), we're going to keep being given a home game there.

at least we can win there now.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
