Mine too DeeZee... loved this bloke and is one of my early childhood heroes in my early games along with Wells, Alves, Bourke, Park (et al). I still recall Park butting out his smoke under boot in the forward line just as the siren blew for the start of a match haha.

Anyone hear what he had to say? Great player, remember him holding Royce Hart to zip goals for 95% of a game in the 70's as usual we were run over and Royce kicked three late ones to get the 3 votes but yet Gary had given him a bath and football lesson for 90 odd minutes. Those were the days!

If I remember he had such a great season in 1972 that they made him All-Australian but at CHF because Peter Knights had an equally sensational year at CHB. ( or did I imagine that ?)

I worked with Gary for a few years.

He was a trainee draftsman.

He is 1 month and 23 days younger than my good self.

We had a Chief Draftsman that was an insane Toiges supporter. (is there any other type)

He said to Gary (lucky) as he was known to us. How do you find him to play against.

Piece of p155 his reply. He doesn't have a right foot or handball so stand on his right side.

That way he'll never get a kick or a handball.

How right he was.

I have just finished listening to the podcast.

It brings back very good memories.

We went to dances together at Powerhouse. Now that was a sight to behold 2 blokes with 2 left feet.

But one kicked goals with the other.

I remember him getting knocked out cold very early on in a final (or were we playing for a place in the 4?) against the Pies (I think it was)... we ended up losing.

Hardtrack if it was a final in the 70's it must have been dark and at the South Melbourne Oval under lights. We didn't play any daytime VFL finals in the 70's that I remember.

He is still the best CHB I have seen. Call me biased but I don't care. I place him above Jakovich from WCE, Chris Mew, Leppitsch or anyone else. He played in the era of Hudson, Hart, McKenna, Wade and on most occasions came out on top or equal. Absolute gun.

And he was seriously robbed of the 74 Brownlow. Keith Greig was a gun (very soft though) but he didn't play a Brownlow-winning season in 74 and he got 3 votes on the last round of the year and jumped past Hardeman.

It is unfortunately Demon folklore that we did not play finals after 1964 until after that last round in 1987 when we knocked off the doggies and had to rely on Hawks doing the cats (I love you Jason Dunstall) and made the finals.

How many Big V jumpers did Hardeman wear?

As a kid i recall almost automatic selection for Gary.

That was in the days of 2 players selected from each club..but still very impressive record.

In that case, perhaps it was a game we needed to win if we were going to be any chance to secure a place in the finals... whatever it was, we lost.

Yes, in the late 60s and 70s there was a night competition for the teams that didn't make the finals. Games were played under lights at the old Albert Park Ground. My recollection is that the lighting was poor and the standard of play even poorer. But it was the only night football of any description in those days with all games being played on a Saturday afternoon.

My hazy memory recalls winning it one year ?

In 1976 Demons beat Collingwood in the last game but missed out on the finals because Footscray drew with Carlton when we needed Carlton to win. Only good thing was that Collingwood received the wooden spoon.
