Thanks RPFC. Looking at it, would love to sign Frawley and Hogan to long term deals this year but that aside there are some fairly easy list management decisions at the end of 2014 if the following players don't extract the digit...

Tapscott, Strauss, Bail and Byrnes.

Also teetering on the edge will be Blease and to a lesser degree Spencer and Dunn depending on performance...

Of course Cross is unknown how long he will play and Nicho may be gone or only get 1 year...

That's at least 4 changed and possibly more depending on performance which as we improve should hopefully become more the norm rather than 10 or 11 like recent times...

Updated - 'Tough Kent' is Nicho's player sponsor so that will have to be good enough for rpfc. He says 2014.

This would mean it is extremely unlikely we will take part in the PSD.

We are off to the RD.

Ok, I like thinking ahead and I know that some posters don't like this so look away now:

Players OOC at the end of 2014:

2014
Frawley (RFA), Tapscott, McDonald, Blease, Strauss, Spencer, Bail, Dunn, Byrnes, Barry, Kent, M Jones, Terlich, Cross, Clisby*, Riley*, Nicholson

With the avenues for new players ever increasing - we got trade ins, DFA, rookie upgrade, and draft just this year - there is a chance that we would have a similar level of movement at the end of 2014. Bolded players are those that I would look to re-sign as soon as possible (keep in mind that Clisby and Riley may have longer contracts, I have not seen confirmation of their years).

Defining years ahead for Tapscott, Blease, Strauss, Bail, and Nicholson. I am no fan of Dunn but he may be looking at one year contracts until the club doesn't want him anymore, I can't imagine another club overly desiring his skillset. Byrnes and Cross may be moved on after one year, the former likely to be.

rpfc's Best Guess: Nicholson, Strauss, Bail, Byrnes, and Tapscott will be delisted. Will that be enough? I don't know. Good thing Byrnes has another year on his contract.

are you sure about cross? i thought he got a 2+1 contract

Apologies for the Nicholson confusion, I made the assumption that we gave him and Evans the same contract but they didn't. I always worry a bit when we don't release details of contract years because it usually means they have been given a contract The Footy World would think is too long...

Again, any inside knowledge on Riley, Michie, and Tyson would be welcome.

Yes, and this may blow your mind, but I believe the Nicholson contract is a legacy, not of Neeld, but of Bailey...

Only at Melbourne...

I thought Vince got 4 years?

3+1

Has to meet certain criteria for the 4th.

I might be wrong, but I thought that Bailey legacy was identical contracts to Evans and Nicholson, with both getting 3 years, involving extra year (or years? Can't recall) on the rookie list, then a senior list elevation.

I assumed Nicholson must have been extended by Neeld/Harrington beyond that.

Surely he can't have been given a 4 or 5 year deal?

I had heard that for agreeing to spend their second year (2012) on the RL, they were assured contracts on the PL after that season. Evans evidently got 2013 (as he re-signed this year), and Nicholson must have got 2013 and 2014. So in essence, he got a 3 year contract.

I was under the belief that both had 3 year contracts, but Evans' form was impressive enough for them to give him a 1 year extension a year before the contract ended, presumably with a pay upgrade for the 2 years.

I don't know if I am following what you are saying.

Both were 2nd year rookies in 2012 and they were given seperate contract lengths from 2013. Evans with a 1 year that he extended for two as the article above stipulates, and Nicho got a two year contract.

It's very possible I could be wrong.

I understand the timeline as being thus:

2010 - both drafted as rookies.

2011 - both complete 1 year rookie contract and at completion of this season, both sign contracts to remain on the rookie list for 2012, then be elevated to senior list for season 2013 & 2014. Offers security to the players, in return for an extra year as a rookie.

2012 - both players see out the year as rookies, and are elevated at the end of the season.

2013 - both players are on the senior list for the 2nd of their 3 year contracts. Evans impresses enough to earn a "2 year contract extension" from 2013, which essentially gives him an extra year (2015) on the original contract and presumably a pay restructure for the 2014 season.

2014 - both players would have been in the 3rd year of their contract, if not for Evans' extension. Nicholson's final year of contract.

2015 - Evans' final year under contract. Nicholson not contracted for 2015 at this stage.

That's how I see it.

I thought I would make a new one as the old one was getting a little long.

2016

Dawes, Grimes (RFA), Watts (RFA), Michie*, Vince, Tyson*

2015

Clark, Trengove, Jamar (UFA), Garland (RFA), McKenzie, Howe, Jones (RFA), Evans, Gawn, Fitzpatrick, Viney, Toumpas, Pedersen, Hogan, Salem, Kennedy-Harris, Hunt

2014

Frawley (RFA), Tapscott, McDonald, Blease, Strauss, Spencer, Bail, Dunn, Byrnes, Barry, Kent, Jones, Terlich, Cross, Clisby*, Riley*, Nicholson, Harmes ®, King ®, Georgiou ®, Jetta ®

* = Best guess of contract length. Would love confirmation...

Jetta and Georgiou have one year to impress enough for a spot on the main list or they should be delisted. Marmes and King should both be guaranteed two years of the RL or what was the point - I hope the club realises that King will require possibly three years on the RL and two years on the main list to get a return, otherwise it is a waste of everyone's time.

I can see up to 10 possible deletions again next season.

  • 5 months later...

Bump.

Given we're well into the season now and no further contracts have been signed, might want to get a hurry on....

In my mind there's a pretty clear split between players I'd like to keep this year and those I'd happily move on.

Max Gawn would want to get on the park I would have thought. I'm probably more disappointed with his progress than just about all others. And I know he's had injury but...

Yep. Tapscott, Blease, Strauss, Nicholson and Barry all cactus at this stage, if I had to delist people right now. (Three top 20 picks turfed in one go. Ugh.) Spencer, Byrnes, Jetta® in doubt - these are the sort of ones that would be left until the last minute and will depend on salary cap (presumably not an issue) and how many spots we think we need to free up for trades, free agency signings and the draft. The rest should be working towards being signed.

Of course, this is a round 8 assessment - plenty of opportunities for the strugglers to change my mind yet.

Barry Nasher? Bit early isn't it?

Barry Nasher? Bit early isn't it?

How come? He wouldn't be the first person delisted after two seasons. Think you need to have shown enough to prove that you're worth persevering with and I'm unconvinced, and you need to keep turning the list over.

I'm not wedded to the idea and I'm going purely of second hand information, but on gut feel it sounds right to me.

anyone got an updated list? the one below had some things RPFC wasn't sure about.

I thought I would make a new one as the old one was getting a little long.

This would be a good thread as a reference for contracts and also future list management if one is so inclined.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.
