in 2013 it was hard to rate something that did not exist.
With the recent additions I am hoping for a 5.5 in 2014.
Lets not forget we will still have a mainly kids group.

All those mentioned above I would give the total combined ten (10). Most would not get a game at any other club. Ask the question at the end of 2014.

We got another two talented mid kids with a third to come in November.

I don't think it helps next year as much as it is really promising three years from now.

Jones, Vince, Viney, Trengove, Grimes, Jones, Tyson, Michie, Toumpas, Pick 9, and Evans are the 'talents' that will drive our improvement and most are kids and/or unproven.

The missing aspect to our line up is no guarded secret. We had/have a pretty fair pair of bookends. Given the job they will carry it out with fair dividends. Arguably the fwds havent had the opportunites that equate with the workload imposed upon our backs but the talent and ability is there. We've lacked that 'thing' in the middle....that Midfield thing. So the order was given, GET US A MIDFIELD !!

Add to Viney, Toupas, Trengove and the indfatiguable Jones and an assortment of others and I think we actually DO have a competitive Midfield. Not a world beater but one able to stem the tide of onslaught to the backs and cogently deliver some feed to our forwards.

You couldnt really rate what didnt exist before but Id give our new lot a pass. Time will tell what kind .

While the AFL player rankings aren't definitive, they give a good insight into a players standing, over their last 40 games.

Interesting to note that Vince was Adelaide's 5th best player (4th best Mid), and Cross was still the Dogs 9th best player (5th best Mid).

They'll sit #2 and #6 respectively in Melbourne's current rankings, and #2 and #3 of the Midfielders. They give us 3 mids inside the AFL top 200 players. Hawthorn, the benchmark team, has 6, Sydney 8 and Freo 6.

Where do the other 3-5 come from?

Dom Tyson & Jack Viney have only played 13 games each. Multiply their scores based on 40 games and both would be on the cusp of the top 200 based on output from their debut seasons alone. They'll be players.

Then we need a couple of either, Viv Michie, Toumpas, Trenners, Grimes, Watts (if he plays mid) to hit their straps.

Any of McKenzie, M Jones, Kent, Evans, Taggert developing into an A-Grade would be a bonus. Can't see it though.

When can we expect to see 6+ mids in the top 200 and a genuinely competitive unit? 2015 you'd think.

Hogan should be a HFF who goes in the middle a bit in his first few seasons.

His tank is enormous and so is the rest of him.

Understandably most Melbourne supporters will be cautious when it comes to their expectations for the coming season, however we really only need a bit of luck on the injury front to be a completely different outfit to next year.

We know what we get with Jones, Vince and Cross, who are of a similar standard, although different in style, but it's the unknown quantities of Michie, Tyson, Viney, pick 9, Clark, Hogan, Dawes and Roos that will either impact our prospects.

If you believe Freo supporters Michie will be a tremendous asset. Many rate him more than Barlow. He's a good size, a quality kick, has pace and is a clearance machine at WAFL level. Unlike Magner and Mckenzie who butcher the footy when they get it Michie has good skills and class. At 21 he's ready to play good footy if he's injury free.

Tyson could be our best midfielder in 3 years and one of the competitions best. It's not overstating things to say that he has the ability to be a bona fide gun. He's big, smart, balanced, a great mark and looks like a cross between Hodge and Pendlebury. Along with Viney we get that inside mid presence we've been lacking. He's only slid down the pecking order at GWS for one reason - injuries.

Viney will be better in his second year and better with good players around him. I'm excited to see where he can take his footy next year.

Pick 9 could be a revelation and play 18 games, or take a while to find their feet like Toumpas. Wines, Brad Crouch, Vlastuin and O'Meara are examples of the former.

Clark could be close to the best key forward in the game next year if he's injury free. His impact could be massive.

I won't listen to people that want to quell pressure or talk about this guy. He's the best talent to walk into the club in 40 years. At 19 he will be a damaging player and impact the results of football games.

Dawes still has injury worries, but has time to get fit for round 1 and enjoy the bulk of the preseason. He's a reliable workhorse who has entered his prime and will be terrific for Clark and Hogan.

Ross Lyon has shown what an elite culture and coaching environment can achieve in a short time. The players will love playing under Roos and enjoy their football. They want to get better and he'll give them the tools.

Others may think of Watts and what he can do, so he's another ingredient that can make this cake rise.

I realise that I'm asking for blue sky and for everything to go right, but it's about time we had an ounce of luck. Other clubs enjoy moons aligning and I reckon it's about time we got a break.

As I said, I'll understand the reticence of others, but a fit and strong 22 could surprise a lot of people next year.

A Torana with a 2850 was an ordinary shopping cart. Given a real engine it won Bathurst ( more than once )

I understand his stats etc re: his clearances but comparing him to the likes of Kennedy and Hannebery...seriously.
