2013 Player Review - # 31 Jack Grimes

Surgery on a broken collarbone put him out of action for more than two months in the middle of the season. Played well on either side of that injury and looked the best late when he returned to his more familiar defensive role.

I do like Jack as a player and he is probably the best leader of men at the club

My anxiety levels do elevate however whenever he is kicking within 20 metres of the boundary

He will be a good HB once we stop trying to make him into a midfielder.

Interesting to see if he is the captain in 2014.

i hope he is the sole captain in 2014.

an excellent leader of men, speaks brilliantly in both a casual and corporate environment, and i think he's under-rated as a footballer.

Yes, Yes, Yes and he is a good HB.

Will flourish under Roos and will be retained as co-captain alongside Jones.

Will be very interesting in how Roos uses Grimes. Half back Flanker or Midfielder?

Not a midfielder.

No hes not..hes best by a mile coming off the half back. Is, well can be, a clever instigator of a play. he needs to go back to this role. I think possibly his midfield stint smacked more of desperation than anything else.

A solid pre ought to see jack back and firing. Be interesting to see how Roos recasts this team

What is this "leader of men" crap that people always go on about? Are we worried about getting a "leader of women" instead?

He's a good man to listen to Frank, very happy for him to retain the captaincy for another year solely allowing Trenners just to concentrate on being a starting 22 player.

It's easy to forget how young he is in regards to games played.

Would be great to see him with a full preseason and add a couple kg's on the frame as I wouldn't mind him as that big bodied mid we all crave. His kicking his reminiscent of Jobe early on in his career and he has turned out quite nicely. Not saying Jack will be the same or get close but he will continue to get better and never thinks twice of putting his body on the line and I love his spoiling and tackling efforts.

Although it wasn't his best year, I am still very happy with my purchase of a signed Grimesy guernsey during the season.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: West Coast

Epic battle alert.  This Sunday, Casey Fields hosts a coach’s showdown pitting the wits of the master Mick Stinear (92 games, 71.7% win rate) against his protégé Daisy Pearce (16 games, 43.8%). Still early in her coaching journey, Daisy’s record doesn’t yet reflect her impact — but she’s already the best-performed coach at West Coast.Dais’ is mythic.  Like Katniss Everdeen, everyone either wants to kiss her, kill her (sporting metaphor) or be her.  Toothers Daisy Pearce is a role model, someone admired for their heart, humility and humour.

  • AFLW REPORT: Port Adelaide

Well, that was a shock. The Demons 4-game unbeaten run came to a grinding halt in a tense, scrappy affair at the sunny, windy Alberton Oval, with the Power holding on for a 2-point win. The Dees had their chances—plenty of them—but couldn't convert when it mattered most. Port’s tackling pressure rattled the Dees, triggering a fumble frenzy and surprising lack of composure from seasoned players.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.
