He is a very average one so it seems. The Club judged him Number 2, made him a marked player way before draft day...celebrated losses because Trengove was coming.

Well he is here now and yes he laid some tackles on Saturday night but he is still slow and can only kick 30-35 metres.

Would i be as harsh if he was picked at 20-30 in the draft? No, because he wouldn't be at the club.

The MFC targetted $cully & Trengove WAY BEFORE draft night & neither of them are going to be better than ok barring a miracle.

But i have no problem giving the club a hard time about the high draft selection and making the kid captain.

I reckon if he was pick 30 we'd be saying how happy we are with his progress despite his lack of paragon. We'd be lamenting his lack of pace but we'd be stoked that he is so competitive with his tackling and talking about his promising ability to bob up and luck the odd goal and hoping that with better fitness he could push forward more and hurt opponents on the scoreboard.

It's the midfield, OD. We have other holes, but it's difficult to tell with the majority of our starting 22. Our defence has been a shining light again this year and our forwardline (with the injection of some fantastic leadership from Dawes) is slowly starting to look the goods. It's the midfield that consistently let us down. Jones tries hard and so does Trengove, but the rest, the work rate either isn't there or the skills aren't. We won't make the eight next year necessarily, but we if trade/FA and draft well, we could come close with a decent midfield. I agree with AJ. No wholesale changes. We need some stability. I can see a number of blokes (at least 8) who are either regular VFL players or yo-yo between VFL and AFL. It's not as dire as people think. Fix the midfield, midfield, midfield. I would hope we could fill most midfield holes within two years. Any other list holes (crumbing forwards, running defenders etc) will be fixed as we near a premiership window.

As someone who knows how to patronise people - you have to earn it.

In no way has what we have seen since Neeld left been anything other than a moderate to massive improvement. From the scoreboard, to the I50 counts, to the increased numbers of uncontested possessions.

It may simply be the short term effects of a caretaker coach but I will give credit to something I didn't think would happen: Craig has improved our onfield fortunes.

Don't take a presser in Darwin after a loss at face value. That place would suck the life and energy out of anyone at least in the short term. Any team that plays there is a loser even if they win. Thats coming off the complete polar opposite in conditions at Geelong, another designated losers venue for Victorion clubs. We have to get these venues off our roster. Its going to be tough.

I think this is debatable. In coach's speak perhaps, his draft number has no bearing. However, the draft is structured so that, at least in theory, clubs don't stay down the bottom for too long by injecting them with top end talent. In that sense, his progress is assessed as that of a number 2 draft pick. If isn't stacking up, for whatever reason, that has implications for how far away we are from making genuine progress up the ladder and finding the elite midfielders that you would hope to uncover in the top ten. It has relevance in the discussion.

I also do not buy he is injured. That is just what people want to believe. Since the sling tackle it is almost like Trenners has seen a ghost because he just cannot create space, which is what we lack so badly.

It's really interesting, i have worked with people who have OP and to me it screams of that, but i would have thought if that was the case he would have been put on ice, and it's been going on for too long to be just the stress fracture,

is he just not the player we hoped he would be? is it the captaincy? is it an injury or a combination of injuries? is it confidence? all of the above?

I still hold out alot of hope he will be a good player for us, maybe not an Ablett or a Judd but i see no reason he can't be our very own luke ball.

totally agree mate. He has hardly missed a game, so there is no way it is OP.

he lacks pace sadly. He could play a Luke Ball role if he muscled up a bit more.

Doesn't Sylvia play with op? Can it be countered by supportive strapping? Mebbe the trainers are still working with the bandages to see what allows freedom with minimal discomfort?

Not sure mate. I thought surgery and rest was the best remedy. Trenners has had neither.

Yes he could, but it is not the right thing to do if he can only play at 70% capacity.

We recruited him to be a top liner & that is what we need.

yes i can see that, but it doesn't just go away. Why play week after week?

Could have had surgery last summer whilst missing preseason if it is OP.

It doesn't add up & not a word from the club. He just plays each week at reduced output.
