I've only seem glimpses of him play and of course its against lesser opposition but I'd take Kade Kolodjashnij with our first pick. Stop trying to draft players because of what they could be and draft for what they are. Left footer, great size, racks up the touches on half back and no reason he couldn't make it in the midfield.

So you want a big body midfielder? But do you want a Heppell type who is more an accumulator or do you want a Watson or Pendlebury who are more clearance winners even though Watson does it with shire size a lot but Pendlebury also with size and smooth moving.

Most of the better midfielders in this draft - Kelly, Billings, Sheed, Aish aren't overly tall or with big bodies. Dunstan has a strong body but is only listed at 184cm. Matt Crouch is like his brother and solid built but not tall.

Scharenberg has played CHB at the carnival but at 190cm he's more suited to either a flanker role or a big body midfielder role. In that way he could be similar to Heppell. He could come in to AFL and play as a half back flank in his first year or so then move into the midfield.

After watching today I feel Dunstan is a pretty safe bet player but you wonder about his ceiling. I really liked Aish's class over the top of the ground but he's just not going to find that time at AFL level. I'd have to see more because players like Dal Santo and Gibbs who have the effortless glide can be really frustrating if they don't step it up. The one I really liked was BenHur's man Kelly. He screams class as well but it's more a ruthless efficiency to the way he plays. It's get ball, make right decision, execute, repeat. For heavens sake I'm glad he does all his endurance work so he's got AFL fitness but I'd like to see the guy eat. He can skip the beap test at the combine I don't really care but can he put on 5kg between now and then so he wont be snapped in half at AFL level next year!

I think we just need the big body. whom has a huge pressence. Id take either of the players i suggested and they would make us better out of the middle.

Yeah but David Myers for Essendon is twice the size of Boomer Harvey but you'd take Harvey every day of the week.

There may not simply be a big midfielder at the elite end of this draft. Might have to have faith in what he lacks in height Jack Viney makes up for in strength and attitude. I'd love all our mids to be 190cm but Hawthorn go ok with Hodge, Lewis, Mitchell and Sewell who don't have much height as a combination.

Jack Viney would run rings around Dunstan.

Viney is a much better hunter and gatherer.

It's harder this year due to Sheed and Boyd getting injured.

It's harder because Aish - who was rated top 2 - had shoulder surgery before the season, so isn't at his best.

Billings has been underdone.

Crouch has had a limited prep.

McDonald was under an injury cloud before last weeks game - as mentioned today.

Most those players are expected to go at the top end of the draft, so it makes it hard to accurately sum up.

I can only imagine scouting players is hard enough when they are all fit, let alone having to take into account players being injured, etc.

Adelaide are out of the 1st round, and Essendon will likely be too.

Meaning our 2nd round pick will be something like pick 18.

Kelly moves so smoothly.

Really, all those highlighted in this thread should be fine AFL players.

True and Murphy, Bennell, Coniglio, Whitfield, Swallow, Hawkins.

Recruiters don't make a decision on who wins a medal, which may be your point.

Would be happy with any of Sheed, Kelly, Aish with our first pick. They all have class, find the footy, make good decisions and execute their skills well. I haven't seen as much of Aish due to his injury, but Sheed and Kelly have both been consistent in displaying the skills which will make them good AFL players.

I say we go for the most talented midfielder with our first pick and trade for a midfielder with another pick.

Someone like Craig Bird from Sydney would be ideal. He's the right age bracket being 24, experienced with close to 100 games, comes from a good culture and has developed well. He's also a premiership player! He's played defensive roles, played inside midfield roles and has kicked goals. He'd provide ball winning ability and good work ethic with his tackles and defensive pressure. Good role model for our kids as well as being a good midfielder for our team IMO.
