Sign Jesse Hogan up for 5 years (Suns and Jack Martin)

TS wanted to be a one club player.

That did not last long

The MFC needs to improve on and off the field to give the kid some hope for the future.

Add about five others to that list.

I question whether your opening statement is correct.

What Manager with half a brain would encourage this kid to sign with the MFC beyond 2014.

IMO the MFC will really need to show some big improvements in 2014 to keep this kid.

That is the position our club is in at present.

Ask yourself one question if you were Hogan would you want to be part of this years team?

There are plenty of managers who would recommend staying beyond 2015 (not 2014).

First, we'll be able to offer him more than any other club, so financially there is a strong incentive.

Second, he's going to be the apple in every Melbourne kid's eye because he'll stand out like a diamond in the rough - meaning his sponsorship and marketing value improves here relative to other clubs with other young stars.

Third, 2013 should (hopefully) represent the bottoming out of this club, meaning that it's all upwards from here.

Fourth, adding in potentially ND2, and/or a FA, and/or a trade, he'll have N Jones, Viney, Toumpas, Grimes, Trengove and M Jones to deliver the ball to him - with time, and with hopefully one or two more mids, that's a decent amount of supply.

That's how I'd spin it, anyway.

As well as that, if he signed a big money 5 year contract, he'd come out of that a very wealthy young man - and still only 23 years old.

I'd suggest to him that he should make money while he is young and then if the MFC is still rubbish when the contact expires, he still has plenty of footy left and could chase success with another club.

I hope we will at least be competetive in 5 years time anyway.

He would be silly not to sign it, he get out of bed go to training and break down, I bet Mitch Clarks glad he signed his massive deal , he could've gone to Freo and got half the money, being a sportsman only a short term job, you could break down anytime.

I can't believe the trashing that we are getting over this. Martin and Hogan have the same manager, Martin has been given a five year contract, their manager has obviously pointed this out to us and said "How about it?". This is not us deparately trying to stitch him up, it's more of their manager trying to stitch us up.

Having said that, I would still give him the five years.

That was my point RB he said he wanted to be but we all know that what people often say is different to what they intend in the loger term. TS is a good example.

I give little weight to what people have purported to have said.

Actions are what counts.

I will believe Hogan is committed to a long term future with the MFC when re signs for a longer period.

Sign him up and breed him out.

Our luck he would have a set of twins and then triplets.

All GIRLS.

Has to reach the minimum games first of all. Is it 150?

Still praying we can get this done.

Might have to wait for the new coach though.

edit - by my count he has kicked 30 goals in 10 games in the VFL, including a game where he left early with injury

Amazing effort.

Given that we have more kids around Hogans age at our club - than Freo or West Coast, I think that helps our chances.

Hogan will be a big name in football and he has every opportunity to become everything he could be - playing at MFC.

You are 100% correct that we really do need get this coaching business sorted, I really pray we get Roos, he is that good.

If he didn't want to come to Victoria he wouldn't have put himself in the mini draft, he will sign in due course.

You can add an "A" grade coach to your list tu.

Think Hogan should meet with the new Women's team we have going on. One by one. In private.

I'm thinking a Magic Johnson style 25 year $25m contract for Jesse.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
