Silver spoons, do you fall over coz of the chip on your shoulder, have a look at the poll results, not quite what you were looking for, you need to realise that a lot of posters on here actually think for themselves and like to make considered decisions, do you have any experience at Board level at any organisation?

I run a company with 23 staff. Built by my partner and I. Started off with $2k.

mate, I know how its done. Determination can get you anywhere.

Can't even imagine why anyone would think so.

Nothing against him, but this is a business not a media program.

Football Director maybe.

If we needed a new pres with a football background (and I don't think we do) , I'd be looking at someone like Greg Wells.

I believe this is a media role, someone who is vocal in public and isn't afraid to back down would be and awesome addition

The business role would be up to the new CEO, i think these roles shouldn't be confussed

Spot on, except for confussed bit.

sorry, trying to get some humour back into life, and went fishing at franklin point yesterday got 3 king george.we all had a bad fortnight and im looking for a smile

It's all good, jazza.

Been a while since I've fished over your way. We used to enjoy heading down to Johanna after work and getting anything from gummies to pinky's to big salmon.

President is the face of the club, though knowing a bit about business would be helpful.

I don't give a stuff if the CEO is much interested in footy, or even is a Demon follower - he / she needs to know how to run a big organisation, get sponsors and actually keep their noses out of the footy department.

What is Peter Jackson, ex-Bummers CEO doing these days?

We could do worse than the Ox. He has connections in the media and elsewhere. His sole vision for the club would be to win a flag, which is what it should be.

Solution to the current woes= spill of all board positions+ election +extraordinary general meeting set goal to win flag x (Ox get a ticket together)

if Jeff Kennett can be preisdent of a footy club, then David Schwarz sure as hell can

The man uis an inspiration, has overcome a lot of personal and professional tragedies and a horrible addicion to rebuild his life

Id support him 110% if he wanted to be the Prez

lol - comparing Jeff Kennett to David Schwarz. As Yossarian said, he was the Premier of Victoria. He might be a footy dunce, but he knows how to run an organisation.

Honestly, I can't believe people are still clinging to this idea of Schwarz as the club president. It is beyond ridiculous.

Gee I wish Schwarz kills it, just seen him on the footy show

With Ox involved, Viney around, we are in good hands.

Any other olders players that would be valuable to get involved?

Can't answer Yes or No to this yet.

Need to hear more...But if Ox does into the club he certainly coould be Prez down the track.

We need a face. Jimmy proved that.

Unite supporters.

Wins unite supporters!

Jimmy was a great fundraiser, a tin rattler. He showed that with Reach and again with the MFC. And on the face of it, he was good for the club.

But he sent us down this bloody path...

  • The botched appointments were on his clock.
  • The botched sackings were on his clock.
  • G Lyon was got involved on his clock.
  • Tanking happened on his clock.
  • The rot started on his clock and set in on his right hand man (Don's).

Sure Ox could play and sure he had ticker but come on!

in fact it strengthens my point - if a politcian can be an AFL presdient, then the Ox definuitely can

Help me understand your point? If a guy who helps run a country can run a football club then a guy who, just generally ran around a paddock can as well?

Hard to argue with that...

The business role would be up to the new CEO, i think these roles shouldn't be confussed

The board appoints the CEO. The president is Chairman of the Board.

Yet you'd rather a face than a mind at the top?

Mate I'm not a fan of McLardy but if his boards primary goal isn't to build a club that can win a premiership, then what the hell is it? Of course their set goal is to win a flag.

Humour me. What are his "connections elsewhere"? Racing connection notwithstanding!

Ron Walker - Demons supporter, successful business man, very well connected, if he can organise an Olympic Games, who knows, maybe he can organise the current mess that is MFC.

It's public knowledge that Ron Walker has been very unwell lately .

Our board's primary goal has been business oriented, clearing debt and chasing members. Certainly assuring the future and establishing a sound basis for the future is important, however there is no cohesion or shared beliefs that are evident at the MFC.

But the primary goal should be to win a flag. If this requires a re-build then re-build. In any discussion about Melbourne the talk is to become competitive, to play finals, to get draft picks etc... and look at where this has got us.

Do you think that Frank Costa and his team at Geelong aimed to be competitive, to play finals, to get draft picks? No bloody fear! Costa set about getting the right people, setting the expectation that failure wasn't an option, making good business and football connections with the Geelong community etc... But the club's sole objective was to win flags and win flags they have. They will be in the mix in 2013, make no mistake.

We have been aiming too low since 1964. We have been settling for mediocrity and guess what ? That is exactly what we have ended up with.

With regard to Schwartz, at least he is standing up and offering an opinion, in stark contrast to the insipid "leadership" that we have on our board at present. He could with right people around him including some past players- Neitz, J McDonald etc... Add some sorely need leadership in the current leadership vacuum at the MFC.

So the new board should be made up of past players who were good footballers, but nonetheless part of the post '64 era of mediocrity? And again, were better at running around chasing a ball than running successful organisations.

By the way. G Lyon stood up and offered an opinion - we selected Neeld on his opinion alone. Look where that got us.

And McLardy signed off on Neeld knowing the recruiting process went something like this...

  1. Lyon promises to land Clarkson.
  2. Lyon fails to land Clarkson
  3. Lyon sits down for a coffee with Malthouse and asks who is the pick of the league's (or maybe just his) assistants.
  4. Malthouse nominates Neeld.
  5. Lyon speaks to a few people who worked with him. Good reports.
  6. Neeld tells Lyon he's in the final 2 for the Adelaide gig and needs to make a decision (he's bluffing).
  7. Lyon offers him the job.
  8. Calls Jim to tell him he's appointed Neeld.
  9. Jim says okay, tells him to let Don know his decision.
  10. Don signs off on it.

McLardy should stand down.

Read my section on Costa @ Geelong.

Getting the "right people" means just that. You need some with business knowledge, football knowledge, inter-personal skills, organisational skills on the board and around the club.

Of course this means the involvement of some players from the post '64 period, as those from the pre 64 period are all either in or approaching their 70s.

By setting out to win a flag you are forced to address all of the minutiae that you are discussing.

What ever it takes!

I read it and agree that they've set a great example of what should be done.

With that in mind you talk about the "right people" but all you can offer up is Schwarz and a bunch of his ex-teammates.

This may be symptomatic of the fact that no one else has put their hand up or showed any real interest which is a tragedy.

Yes, McLardy should stand down.

All that footy show interview showed me was that it is a stupid program that is more concerned with its own egos than any real news. Still have no idea how he's getting involved.

Didn't see it, what was the gist ?

I don't think so, I think it's a case of right person, right time.

Think about the parallels between schwarzs life and the current plight of the MFC.

It's like a phoenix rising. I think schwarz can feel it too.

Our club does not need a a businessman, we need a hero. A champion who has been to the depths of despair and risen again to greatness. A man with his finger on the pulse, time on his hands and a microphone to the city.

I don't believe in messiahs, but ATM, the MFC needs one.

Like stynes who built great spirit in the club, schwarz would do the same, but with a little more grunt and power.

Mclardy oversaw too many mistakes and failures. He has to go.

Schwarz seems like the right man at the right time.

In life, there is one thing I'm certain about, it's that determination and passion can get you to the top.

We need schwarz to inspire the club to greatness once again. Paul Roos would help aswell.

Yep

There's only one person that i believe can truly unite this club and make it a powerhouse of the AFL (given a reasonable time frame of say 5 to 10 years).....

poll anyone??

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
