Barassi speaks

Featured Replies

Ron Barassi has spoken on 7 news. Simple message, hardness at the ball and have a go. It is as simple as that lads.

Nothing about beards though? Maybe they should have sought out your man Gary Baker....

Bloody hell, big Gazza looked sharp when he shaved it off in '81. Didn't do him any good 'though. Did his knee shortly after.

I would certainly prefer him to have any role at our club than, as been suggested, Sheedy.

I love the Barass, but he's 77 and came out last year talking about his dementia. Not fair on him to ask him to get involved in an official way.

Barassi is the heart and soul of what made us great in the 50's and early 60's. He had more than his fair share of success throughout his career and he still knows what it takes to be successful. Our current players and coaching staff don't know what success is and I am sure that most of our players have little or no awareness of our once great success.

Probably carrying that extra weight in the beard.

I was not suggesting that TGRDB coaches the team, but maybe a new CEO could induce him to come down to the club to talk to the current presumably severely depressed playing group about life, success and the joy it brings, and the benefits of bloody hard work and of working as a team.

I wonder if any have even bothered to read his little book: "Ron Barassi Wisdom Life lessons from an Australian legend."

The intro to chapter 12, (and I do wonder if he deliberately chose the number 12 with regard to the guy who currently wears that number), reads "You are not a champion unless you are consistent. You can have champion potential, but a true champion is on the job nine times out of ten."

Well worth a read for general life inspiration, and certainly should be mandatory for budding footballers, if of course they can be bothered!

I remember Alistair Nicholson with a serious beard in 2002 and he was a serious All Australian contender before he did his knee.. after that he was never the same when he chopped it all off..

Love that idea then. He's an inspiring man, would love him to do a day with the players and coaches, just worry that any more than that might be too draining on the great man.

The club IMO should base it's culture around the principles in which Barass played & coached the game. Although the game is now more professional the principles remain the same. Our players & club can still learn a lot from him.

Chopper Carroll too...

You could do a lot worse than give Barass the occasional opportunity to give the pregame rev up. !!!

Barassi lost me when he said Scully should move to GWS.

maybe he just knew he wasn't worth keeping.

He actually said he was conflicted as the best thing for the game would be Scully to GWS but his ties with MFC would rather see him stay.

when I was growing up my recollection is my dad taking me to the footy to watch Melbourne get thumped every single week for 8 yrs under Barrass. I love the man but perhaps he would be more value to Neeld speaking about what its like to coach a bunch of players who are rubbish and think they know more than you do...

The 5 years he coached may have felt like 8 - but was only 5.

when I was 5 it felt like 8! It was an 8 year plan though wasn't it that came to an end at 5?

I guess my point was I know he was a champion and no doubt deserves to be revered but he wasn't a super coach at Melbourne at all. He lost alot and perhaps best efforts might be talking to MN.

Done some research of my own assumptions definitely only a 5 year plan. I stand corrected.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
