One think I like to do is our best 22 followed by the rest team, this highlights the depth or lack there of plus any major holes in our list

The Firsts

Nicho Frawley Garland

Watts McDonald Strauss

Trengove Sylvia Viney

Howe Pedreson Blease

Byrnes Clark Dawes

Jamar Jones Grimes

McKenzie, Toumpas, Tapscott, Dunn

The seconds

Jetta Sellar Davies

MacDonald Gillies Terlich

Evans Magner Bail

Rodan Fitzpatrick Hogan

Davey Gawn Barry

Spencer Couch Jones

Kent Taggart Tynan

When you list our players as two teams (Melbourne & Casey?) then you illustrate how difficult everybody is finding this exercise. Subject to injuries, Casey should be Premiers in 2013 based on the depth of our list. I have decided to amend my list after reading some of the comments.

Backline: Terlich, Frawley, Garland

Half-Backline: Kent, T. Macdonald, Watts

Centreline: Grimes, N. Jones, Trengrove

Come on, he's saying he loves the way Kent is built from a football perspective. He said it in an obviously provocative way for a laugh, and probably to get a rise out of a few gullible geese like yourself. It amazes me that these things need explaining.

Ha ha. I hadn't seen that post. They've been on my extensive ignore list for some time.

Wasn't pedo's role defined as a link between ruck and forward? Would he be playing in a pocket?

Pedo and Dunn are in a lot of teams. Im not sure.

Sorry if someone's already said this. haven't bothered wading thru all 6 pages of comments. The exercise of naming a best 22 is just impossible to do at this stage.

HOWEVER, the fact is that it aint beyond the realms of possibility for anything up to TEN debutantes in our Round 1 team: Viney, Toumpas, Taggert, Terlich, Jones, Dawes, Pedersen, Rodan, Brynes & Gillies.

Probably won't happen. But, just the fact we can even entertain the possibility has me salivating at what could be in 2013.

Go Dees!

BUMP

Been thinking about our foward line and it has a few strings to it now

Clark and Dawes if they are both fit is going to be hard to cover, and if Pederson is down there as well it will only stretch other teams futher. Rodan and Byrnes and maybe Davey and Blease are our only small fowards that I can see but there is 4 options none the less. And our mids rotating through the foward line like Sylvia, Howe Trengrove Tapscott its starting to look dangerous. Also Magner or Dunn to play defensive fowards, Watts and Garland can be thrown down there to mix it up a bit and Hogan to come over the next few years.

Sylvia/Howe Dawes Trengrove/Tapscott

Blease/Rodan Clark Pederson

Bump.

I think predicting our best 22 is harder than it's been for several years. This is partly due to the significant number of new recruits, but also due to the expected improvement of some players who've been around for a while (eg, Evans and Davey).

I would've thought it unlikely that Davey and Byrnes will both play in the forward line. Byrnes was clearly not recruited to play at Casey, but from all reports Davey is starting to look sharp again.

It seems to me that Tapscott and Barry are also being considered for forward line roles. One would think the forward line talls are pretty obvious - Clark, Dawes and Pedersen.

We have more midfield options than last year. Rodan seems to be a likely starter, and I would've thought Viney, Matt Jones, Toumpas and Evans will push for selection in round one. Howe seems to be a midfielder these days.

Jetta and Nicholson seem to be competing for the small back position. Dunn, Strauss and Terlich will probably compete for the half back flank positions.

I don't really have any sense of how Gillies is progressing. Is he likely to replace Sellar? Or Garland?

Clearly, we'll have a core group who demand selection week in, week out - Frawley, Jones, Jamar, Clark, Dawes, Trengove, Grimes, Sylvia, Watts (hopefully), Tom McDonald, Howe, probably McKenzie, but the other spots seem genuinely up for grabs.

Interesting times.

My round one team (based on training reports):

Back: Jetta, Frawley, Garland

Half-Back: Strauss, T. Macdonald, Watts

Centre: Nathan Jones, McKenzie, Grimes

Half-Forward: Sylvia, Clark, Howe

Forward: Pedersen, Dawes, Byrnes

Followers: Jamar, Toumpas, Viney

Interchange: Dunn, Matt Jones, Blease

Sub: Rodan

Emergencies: Barry, Evans, Tapscott

Injured: Trengove

Unlucky: Davey, Joel McDonald, Nicholson, Sellar, Tynan, Kent, Spencer

* Pedersen and Clark to assist Jamar with some ruck work (assuming Clark is actually available for selection)

Would be interesting to see a consolidation of all selected sides.

I think we have only a few single position placements from all .

Perhaps it could be a bit early to place Clark.

Howe seems to be a midfielder these days.

Howe is training with the forwards. That said, most forwards are expected to have the odd rotation through the midfield.

This is the side I'd LIKE to see, not what I expect.

Back: Nicholson, Frawley, Garland

Half-Back: Terlich, T. Macdonald, Watts

Centre: Sylvia, Trengove, Grimes

Half-Forward: Blease, Clark, Howe

Forward: Pedersen, Dawes, Byrnes

Followers: Jamar, Jones, Viney

Interchange: Toumpas, Matt Jones, Barry

Sub: Rodan

EMER: Tapscott, Jetta, Dunn

Bit slow on the wings? But both good users I guess.

I expect Clark to play deeper until he is fully fit meaning Pederson is likely to do a bunch of high hack work especially early.

And I am fairly certain Jamar will struggle at first ruck next year with age/athleticism/the new rules. Spencer or Gawn to overtake?

* no such thing as "wings" really these days. And it's more to provide a generic line-up. It was either name Sylvia on a wing, or Blease on the bench. Btw, Sylvia has excellent pace. I'm not sure why you'd think he was slow.

* Clark may well start deeper due to coming back from injury, but Neeld has publicly stated that Dawes will play closer to goal allowing Clark to get up the ground.

* my side really is "blue sky" and not taking too much notice of injury concerns.

Slow is relative. Lew Jetta is quick and has repeat quickness. Col has a decent cruising speed but is he quick off the mark or can he sustain quick? Not so sure.

What about the ruck stuff? Do you think/fear we will be reliant on big Jake as #1 this year?

Ben Hur, you obviously see Terlich as being a better option than Strauss and Dunn. I've not ever seen him play and rely entirely on reports such as the ones you provide.

I think you've said before you're impressed with his skills, but that his fitness may need to improve (given that he's coming in from the SAFL).

That said, what is it exactly that you see in Terlich over what Strauss and Dunn offer?

To be honest it's more a "hunch" than anything.

I reckon Dunn will get games down back, but for me it's either Dunn, or Garland and I'd probably go with Garland - even though his brain fades get to me. Dunn did well last year in defence, but I see Terlich in a different role. He has dash with good kicking skills and will take the game on off half back, which is exactly what we need. I see Jetta and Nicholson competing for a position, Terlich and Strauss, and Dunn and Garland.

I'm not sold on Strauss. He's a good kick, but imo average one-on-one and a bit soft.

Note: I haven't seen enough of Terlich to form a strong opinion and may well decide he's not up to it. Until I see him in a "real" game/s I'm guessing like anyone else. But anyone that gets 25 disposals to half-time off a HBF and goes on to be named BOG in a SANFL GF gets my interest. And his skills at training look good.

In recent times Callinan, Morris, Puopolo, and Duigan have all been mature age recruits from the SANFL, just like Terlich, and I'm hoping for the same positive result. I doubt the club chose to bring him over for depth, or to play him at Casey. I think they're hoping for the same impact as me.

After watching training, IMO this will be the starting 22:

B: Strauss Frawley Nicholson

HB: Garland McDonald Watts

C: Grimes Jones Trengove

HF: Pedersen Dawes Howe

F: Byrnes Clark Blease

Ruck: Jamar Viney Tapscott

IC: Sylvia Magner Toumpas

Sub: Davey

Emer: Barry, Rodan, Gillies, McKenzie.

I have always believed our back line was strong and still is. With this team our spine would stand side by side against any team in the league. Just my opinion.

If we end up relying on spencer as our number one this year we will be in for a massive struggle. From what I've seen at half a dozen training sessions Rodan is well and truly starting 18. Been outstanding at every session. Personally I also start pederson and Dawes at even expectancies. Really rate everything I've seen from pedo and equally don't rate much I've seen from Dawes in 2 years. Nicholson cannot kick so Terlich goes in purely on the tiny amount of seen of him so far.

Back: Strauss Frawley Terlich

HB: garland Macdonald watts

C: Sylvia Rodan grimes

HF: pederson Clark Howe

F: Byrnes Dawes davey

R: jamar viney jones

Int: trengove toumpas mckenzie

Sub: blease

Next in line: Nicholson, tapscott, Barry, gillies, dunn

Just can't make room for sellar, maybe garlands spot. Barry could be anything an by round 1 may be starting 18. Howe is still the player I'm most excited about. Will be a superstar. This is his year.

Thanks Ben. Interesting that you see Dunn competing with Garland for a spot - I wouldn't have had them as likely competitors, but perhaps you're right.

I agree with your comments on Nicholson and Jetta - will be interesting to see who gets the ascendency there. Both strike me as pretty determined types.

What don't you like about McKenzie? I know you know he will be selected but why wouldn't you select him? If we were playing a final would you really select Barry ahead of him today?

To not even have him as an emergency seems tough.

Hi FNQ,

I don't post much but I always enjoy your training reports. Given you have had an opportunity to see a bit of training I'd like to know why you have Rodan as an emergency?

Most reports have him as a standout especially in the clearance area, What makes the other options better?
