ENDING THE DAYS OF PAIN

Jonesbag if you intend to go in that mood I suggest you stay home.

There is nothing worse than an obnoxious loser.

Calm down it is only a football match.

The future of the free world is not at stake

I was fairly confident that was the case JB

The bombers make it worse for me because after 4 years of rebuild I believe they are where we should be, well perhaps not quite that high.

But certainly not last with no wins.

They stick in my gut as well

frawley is OUT not sure who is replacing him

sellar to replace him according to patrick keane.

Last year, Melbourne's top three goalkickers were:-

• Liam Jurrah 40 goals

• Brad Green 37 goals

• Colin Sylvia 25 goals

...

Alas, after nine matches we have had very little from the players we might have otherwise expected to contribute to the scoreboard. Instead, we have this:-

• Liam Jurrah 0 goals

• Brad Green 2 goals

• Colin Sylvia 0 goals

Incredible statistics and I agree. If you take the three top goalkicking forwards out of any team and replace them with an aggregate of two goals over nine rounds, you're going to see lots of blood and pain.

These figures should be sent to Mike Sheahan and Paul Roos.

Quite right-this is far more important

This is just trawling out excuses. On their limited game time all three have showed nothing and so have their replacements other than Clark.

And that is exactly the point that's being made.

Neeld has virtually not had at his dissposal the three players who were last year's forward line playmakers and the team's goalkickers who have this year been able to provide minimal (about 5%) input into the team's scoring capacity compared with last year.

Try the same exercise with any other team in the competition and the result would not look pretty.

Liam has not had much game time , Green and Sylvia are struggling to adjust and may not be there next year. Liam... who knows?

I'm more hopeful for Strauss, Gysberts and Cook coming good and lifting us next year.

A fit Strauss would release Grimes to play a Mitchell type role in the middle and with Gysberts and Viney raising the midfield bar considerably. If Cook can come in to complement Clark as a big marking presence our forward line looks stronger. Big IF with Cook given he's yet to show much, but...

The team against Sydney was the best on paper I'd seen all year. I haven't seen a worse game of live footy in my life. It's meaningless. I'm still to see any indication Melbourne will win a match. I just watched the first quarter of GWS. I would be happy if our team played a quarter of footy like that.

i take your point there. But I find it hard to see how they can fit in Neeld's forward line thinking. Everyone pushes up too far and are too slow to get back deep. Seems to be vacated for Clark who also has to crumb to himself.

Was this the first last quarter they've won for the year? Conditions would have been tough physically last night too. So perhaps they've hit some kind of fitness threshold.

On the other hand, maybe the team balance was just right. And I agree with Hardnut - they used it much better when they had it, mainly because players provided options ahead of the ball and they were looking for each other. As a result, we got many more uncontested possessions, and that's what's been missing from the game plan until yesterday. It was a definite change.
