Another great piece of work by the club with the Trengove/Grimes announcement timing trumping all other AFL announcements yesterday, getting great interviews, and coverage . Admittedly the age thing is a huge angle attractive to the media , but just a great positive story for the club - again so fay this year.

Good job Cameron!

I was just thinking about how well this was played. Do you think it was planned to be announced this early all along? Or maybe something to do with securing the new major sponsor? Or maybe just to take the attention away from the Roos? Or all of the above?

North must be furious with how Melbourne played this; completely stole their thunder.

Go Dees!

I had commented previously that the announcement was possibly bought forward to place Trengove as the 'youngest VFL/AFL captain of all time'. Emma Quayle suggests in the Age this morning that Trengove was ten days younger than Dench when named captain. If we knew teh make up of the leadership group this fact was worth capitalising on.

It's weird I thought norths announcement was very amateurish they had everyone in middle of ground with media only allowed to watch from a distance they were not impressed with the demons announcing co captains an hour later so well played demons.

Trengove was still guaranteed to be the youngest ever captain when he finally captains a game in round 1 (assuming injury or suspension don't get in the way...)

And in the Age article on North today the first 3 columns of the 6 column article were deveoted to the MFC timing. They will be fuming at the Roos.

I work with a media expert and she says nothing happens by cooincidnece regarding announcements.

Remember North were foolish enough to telegraph their announcement timing days ago.

I would have been cross if the MFC had not done what they did with the leg up from the Roos.. Someone down here in media is a real pro.

BTW - Trengove is the youngest at the time of his first game when he officially leads them onto the field , with Jack G., in late March.

Is it just me or have others noticed that there seems to have been more media coverage of MFC over the summer than I can ever remember before. Possibly more than any other Club. Wonder if this is the MFC seeking out more coverage and being more successful at getting it, perhaps more coverage to help sponsorships and memberships or is it just that for some reason the media think there is something special about to happen at the club and so they are deciding it deserves more coverage. Either way it is pretty surprising, especially considering last season and the hype surrounding the club before the start of the season and the disappointing result.

After Bailey's sacking last year, & the situation with Jim's health we were always going to get coverage. I think the club handled it well. Will mean nothing though without a solid start to the season.

I think that Matt Burgan deserves a lot of the credit. He preparred a heap of stories to drip to the media over the summer break when the papers are looking to fill space. Made the media's job very easy when they had their own journo's on leave.

I think he has been a fantastic pick up by the club.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
