A big THANKS to Anthony Bergin

Featured Replies

Haven't seen anything on here yet regarding the bloke who handed Sean Wight's #27 playing jumper to the MFC recently. Seems a young Anthony Bergin (a Geelong supporter) talked his Mum into buying it at an auction back in 1987. Anthony has taken good care of it all these years and, with Sean's passing, saw fit to give the jumper to the MFC.

I just reckon it is a wonderful gesture, and we here on this supporters' forum should acknowledge it as such.

So, well done, and thanks, Anthony!

(Just hope he doesn't feel any sense of ingratitude on the part of the Club if the Mighty Dees turn the tables on his Cats this weekend! )

Hear Hear. Well done Anthony.

I totally agree with all those sentiments Barrie. Thanks for bringing the gesture to our attention.

Such wonderful spirit of heart . To be applauded and recognised.

Great Story. Well done Anthony.

Thats a great gesture. Thank you Anthony. If you are at the game I hope we can play in the spirit that Sean would have and make it a classic match.

Terrific, a very touching gesture!

I certainly hope that is a winning omen for this weekend....Thankyou Anthony...Sean's spirit will now be that little bit stronger within the MFC.

It is a great gesture.

Was fortunate to attend the President's Lunch last week against Hawthorn and when Jim Stynes presented the jumper to the room it was a touching moment as was the video package paying tribute to Sean Wight. I know there was a lot of tears in the room especially when Jim was overcome with emotion during his speech. Even friends in my group who don't barrack for Melbourne had tears in their eyes.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
