Agree on the injuries as I said it was a factor.

Hope you are right on the 16th, though I would gladly cop 17th right now. Picks 2 & 3 wow. Virtual guarantee that JV would not go until second round. Pick 2 and maybe Moloney or Bate could get us both Under 17 picks from GWS. They could have Whitfield and Grundy. We could get Toumpas. Pick 13 there for trading or using. Salivating stuff.

I thought Moloney and Bate were both free agents which means we cannot trade them and get nine tenths of nothing for them.

Or am I mistaken?

I am not sure. As an aside, what is an AFL club B & F winner in the last two years worth as compensation?

At Hawthorn I would imagine a hell of a lot more than at the Dees.

To be honest I have no idea how thy calculate the "compensation"

Based on past experience the AFL has probably not worked out a system yet.

They usually make up these things on the run.

As another aside how must Footscray feel they got one pick for their guy going to GWS and we got 2 picks.

Their guy is five times the player ours is!

At the moment they would be absolutely livid. Just ask Mark Stevens (Hun/Dog supporter) - he hasn't stopped writing about it - like a dog with a bone ! (snigger) !

He will keep on it at draft time, and forever more through Ward's career at a guess.

Justifiably so H_T

The Dogs got done something cronic

Or we got a great deal.

Probably both.

I'm thinking more the latter.

The size of the contract by GWS to Scully thanks to our clubs tabled offer tipped the compo scales in our favour.

H_T just remembered we are not supposed to discuss this person on here.

Not sure what our penance should be.

I will accept being banned from attending this weeks game

Ugh Bananas !

I think that is an adequate ban old dee. I'm going to Etihad to support the boys too, I'm sure some here would view that as enough punishment for mentioning his name in this thread.

We apologise Redleg !

Essentially, yes.

But we could say to Moloney that you have agreed this contract with Ess and we will match it with the intent to trade you so we can get something for you. BUT he has to agree to that, and Essendon have to be willing to trade. It's called a sign and trade in US sports.

No your punishment it to attend the game. I will be, it's called self flagellation.

And now for more important matters, I just saw a banana in the fruit bowl and I think I will have it with my cereal for breakfast.

Interesting, I was just reading some literature from the club and there was a little piece that caught my eye, which said, that we will most likely have picks 3, 4 & 13 in the draft and can draft 3 very good players. They are probably being realistic when they say what picks we will have, but it seemed to indicate our finishing position was accepted. Just thought that was a little unusual with 6 games to go.

PS. Hope they are right, though I would accept 17th. Now lets see, Grundy or Whitfield plus Toumpas and Martin in 2014 for pick 13 and say Moloney and Bate, with JV second round. Yes I could live with that.

Redleg I have never seen you worry so much about anything.

Will you please take confidence from my life long journey with the MFC.

WE are a lock for 16th or lower.

I wish I was as sure of the Tattslotto numbers tomorrow night.

Put down the glasses it is all over and there will be little shouting.

You obviously weren't with me the day I was drafted, during the Vietnam War.

I never got drafted WJ and as a result never went .

Never marched to stop the war

But I have bad memories of those days.

Friends who suffered.

And the Dees were crap the whole time.

But I did meet my wife so not a total wash out.

I was called up in 1972...on my birthday no less! I was deferred because I was studying at Swinburne and then Gough got voted in later that year and National Service got voted out; can't say I was disappointed.

Geez Hardtack ,I never picked you for an old fella.

I've been to Nam twice as a tourist and I would never have survived the mozzies .

My wife is from Tay Ninh and her dad was "re-educated" for 3 years when the South lost .

Lovely people but the ice in the beer is really a post war crime.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
