Fun fact.

The further you get from Queensland, the faster the cane toads hop.

It's an amazing natural experiment.

Each year cane toads move around a bit, and the boundaries of their range spread a bit further.

The toads which hop more and are fitter and move on more are always the front line of that boundary.

Since they are there with the other 'high-hopping' toads, they go through a kind of situational selective breeding. Big hoppers mate with other big hoppers, and every season that cycle is renewed.

A relevant biologist would be able to tell you if a toad was a Queenslander or from the NT just by watching them for a while, and definitely would be able to confirm it based on leg muscle power.

Make of that what you will.

IMO nothing good comes from Queensland except my Great Grandmother 👵 I still remember old Jon B Petterson!

No everyone knows that Bananas comes from Carnarvon!

Every once in a while, Demonland delivers education (never mind that pesky sport, humour, etc!)

Your assertion drove me to google; well, as far as its 'AI Overview', anyway.

You are indeed right: apparently 'Bananas were first introduced to North Queensland in the 1870s by Chinese immigrants and cane workers from Fiji', whereas 'Carnarvon Bananas' are 'Grown on...plantations along the Gascoyne River in Western Australia, a tradition dating back to the 1840s'!

(I presume you meant Joh Bjelke-Petersen, not one of Cam Petterson's(*) forebears?)

You remember Joh because he and your Great Grandmother were ... what? 😲

(*Hoary old Demonland chestnut😄)

Other banana facts:

The Cavendish banana, which is the one you buy in Coles and Woolworths, was first developed by William Cavendish, the 6th Duke of Devonshire, at Chatsworth House in England. This was because they are resistant to Panama disease.

So really bananas come from England!

Other useless fact.....an acquaintance who works for Toll transport tells me that each and every day 6 B-double trucks arrive at their warehouse full of bananas to feed to Victorian population through Coles. Just goes to show how much @Redleg is doing for the economy!

Wasn’t the Devonshire Tea names after the Duke of Devonshire?

PS: Thanks George, I do my best for Victoria, as we need to find another $15b that the Allan Government has butchered with the CMFEU.

Well this was very interesting, I've learnt a lot about bananas!

I meant the much simpler concept that if you're buying a banana in Aus, it'll most likely have been grown in Queensland 😂

I prefer the higher quality West Australian Bananas, which is grown North of Perth.

Ask the wise person if he or she would rather run 2nd or 3rd or actually last.

To him if you don't win that is it.

Must be a very unhappy person, unless he wins at absolutely everything.

In football, second is last.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
