The Ox & Dean Bailey.

Featured Replies

No it doesn't. Not at all.

The problem is not winning the ball in the midfield in the first place.

Bailey wouldn't expect to have to explain how one position on the field affects another...

Forwards are getting sucked into contests because of that.

You can also add inexperience in there too, but some are foolish enough to just brand that as an 'excuse'.

You could also bring up blokes like Bate or Dunn, but they've never been able to do it very well and just aren't up to it (mentally, in my opinion).

The point was, if you leave a couple of players up forward, it will create less pressure and more options in the midfield and backline, and result in more inside fifties.

Collingwood’s greatest strength in their game plan at the moment is forward pressure, crowding the forward half and creating turnovers. So what does Bailey do? put another Melbourne player back there, who is an important player in our forward line. This allowed another Collingwood player in their forward half, and enabled the Collingwood backs to push up the ground to help choke th midfield.

To counter Collingwood, I would have kept the Melbourne forward line deep in attack, stretching out the Collingwood side, making them accountable, and not allowing their backs to be part of the midfield press. It doesn't have to be a Gorilla. Put Jurrah in the goal square and you won’t see Harry O’Brian running into his forward fifty, or Collingwood backs tackling in the midfield.

Sorry Thomo, that's just wrong.

Quality response.

They only problem with that is you would have those defenders leave those deep forwards in the press and move up the ground making it nigh-on-impossible to get the ball within kicking distance of those deep forwards.

Our forwards moved up the ground to even up the numbers in the press but don't get back into the forward line quick enough or often enough when we get the pill.

Howe did quite well, Sylvia too. Jurrah not so much...

You need forwards who are ultra-competitive and have a great workrate if your opposition is doing a hard press.

Put Watts and Jurrah deep in the fifty and there is no way their defenders leave them.

I might not think much of him as a coach, but the man has superb media skills. A class act. I actually hope he sticks around the club in some capacity.

Quality response.

Haha yeah, well I didn't really have the energy to go through everything that was wrong in your post.

Rpfc covered half of it for me, but you also said that Collingwood's strength is its forward pressure.

Don't be so quick to ignore its quality midfield - Scully, Trengove, Gysberts and McKenzie are the future, but Collingwood's midfield is NOW.

Wellingham showed how underrated he is. We'll ignore Swan, Beams & Thomas for obvious reasons, but Pendlebury, Ball, Sidebottom are very good.

Yeah, we have Moloney. Sylvia was mostly forward.

Jones had a shocker.

Our forwards need to be pushing up and helping win it in the middle.

What I thought was worn noting was what Bate is reported as having said in the Blackrock training thread (I think it was Cards13).

Not just that Collingwood has the best defense he's seen, but also that they make it hard to get back and push ahead of the ball to receive it again in the forward line.

Forwards will push up the ground to help in the midfield, to apply pressure, to make options, that's fairly standard, but then they know they have to work back the other way to provide a forward target.

Collingwood have obviously focused on restricting the opposition's ability to do that.

Very clever.

And lastly - Collingwood should have beaten us soundly, and in these areas - they are the reigning premiers and are years ahead of us.

And I think they had extra motivation against us - not QB, but that a bottom 8 side had come so close the last 2 times we'd matched up.

Put Watts and Jurrah deep in the fifty and there is no way their defenders leave them.

No, they'll leave them.

If they are no chance of getting the pill, they are no threat. The Collingwood defenders will push up into the press, as they did, and create numbers around the ball and win the footy, as they did.

Bingo.

Watts and Jurrah are no threat if they are >80m from the footy.

Their defenders take their position in the press, and even if they come up the ground, their structure allows for them to be covered adequately.

This is the "dead man coaching" part for those that missed it.

I'm not a fan of Robbo's.

So Bailey acknowledges that we dont have a gorilla forward - so what is he going to do about that?

My suggestion is we trade or recuit a ready made full forward i.e. brendan fevola, or some other monster running around in the VFL, SANFL or WAFL because we sure as hell aint waiting 3 or 4 years to develop one!

Worst. Suggestion. Ever.

And why ain't we waiting to develop one?

The rest of our team is developing - don't see why that area can't be also.

Fitzpatrick already has a couple of years in him, Cook is coming along quickly.

There's a NO VACANCY sign out the front of the gorilla closure.

Don't write off Tom Mcdonald either, He's fairly handy around all parts of the ground as well. We have a few who may develop in a way that suits.

But we don't have any One, at the moment, who is ready.

Worst. Suggestion. Ever.

Worst suggestion ever? And yet you dont even have the balls to say why?!?! Wish we were at a pub talking this up then you wouldnt be so smart then would artie fartie

why do none of the sen interviews work on my comp?

does anyone have the same problem?

does anyone know how i can fix it?

Which web browser are you using?

I used to have a lot of problems getting the audio going on Google Chrome on SEN, but the new update seems to have fixed that. just have to except the pop up details that appear under the address bar.

In the past I have always used firefox and it works fine with SEN.

For anyone who was trying to listen to the 2nd half SEN have merged the two into one file now.

Bailey Interview.

Saying that a coach is a "good salesman, that's it" is a pretty extreme view of his coaching...

Bailey has been good in areas and poor in other areas, and it will be difficult for him to get an extension, but he is more than just a 'salesman'...

Agree. I tell you who is a salesman. Brad Scott. If he can coach as well as he chats to the media then he will be amazing. Brad the salesman.

Brad says they need to knock off a heavy weight like Essendon??!?!

There's a NO VACANCY sign out the front of the gorilla closure.

There is a distinct lack of alphas and a silverback.

Is Robbo continually Drunk?? He sure sounds like it...What an absolute Yobb

Good on ya Dean you nailed him good & proper, keeping your own dignity untouched.

The Board will be making up their mind now as they should be doing, nothing is black and white,

...so you are suggesting that Malthouse is not in consideration, then??

Agree to disagree. Everything that I would say in reponse I said earlier.

There was one point in which Leach intimated that Colin Garland's career was at the crossroads...

It was a major WTF moment from which Dean never recovered and he must have thought to himself - what am I doing here?

Comprehensive proof that the tool knows nothing about our side- simply trying to put a spin on a story or issue that is simply not there. Love him or hate him, DB backs his players to the hilt, and reacted exactly as he should have to such an idiotic intimation by Leach. What a [censored].

[censored] me, Leach is a tool.

The bottom line of all this discussion is that a couple of forwards must stay closer to home at all times, and reaction time from the coaches's box on game day is crucial - close games are won or lost in a couple of minutes.

No, they'll leave them.

If they are no chance of getting the pill, they are no threat. The Collingwood defenders will push up into the press, as they did, and create numbers around the ball and win the footy, as they did.

I understand that you want to support the coach and the team, but you have to draw the line at some point. You can not seriously believe that if Melbourne parked Jurrah in the goal square, his direct opponent would leave him and move up to the midfield.

Rudeboy has said that Jurrah has been instructed to play higher up around the flanks, so it is not him having to follow the defender up the ground, it is the coach telling him to move up to the midfield, and the defender staying with him, helping the oppositions press congest the ball in the midfield.

Has Warnock been tried at FF????

I am frustrated that I struggle to get a job as a journalist, and Robbo does what he does.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.

  • CASEY: Sandringham

The Casey Demons rebounded from a sluggish start to manufacture a decisive win against Sandringham in the final showdown, culminating a quarter century of intense rivalry between the fluctuating alignments of teams affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and St Kilda, as the Saints and the Zebras prepare to forge independent paths in 2026. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, the Demons went on a goal kicking rampage instigated by the winning ruck combination of Tom Campbell with 26 hitouts, 26 disposals and 13 clearances and his apprentice Will Verrall who contributed 20 hitouts. This gave first use of the ball to the likes of Jack Billings, Bayley Laurie, Riley Bonner and Koltyn Tholstrup who was impressive early. By the first break they had added seven goals and took a strong grip on the game. The Demons were well served up forward early by Mitch Hardie and, as the game progressed, Harry Sharp proved a menace with a five goal performance. Emerging young forwards Matthew Jefferson and Luker Kentfield kicked two each but the former let himself down with some poor kicking for goal.
Young draft talent Will Duursma showed the depth of his talent and looks well out of reach for Melbourne this year. Kalani White was used sparingly and had a brief but uneventful stint in the ruck.
