Why wasn't Watts put to CHB when Garland went off?

Is the "if they'd kicked straight they'd have won by wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more" argument line correct? I didn't see the game unfortunately (or fortunately?) - I only followed online, but I noticed that within about 5 minutes they'd kicked 1.7 and their massive run of scores in the third quarter looked similar. The only possible way they can kick that many points so quickly is if they keep slamming them in in quick succession because we're unable to clear the ball from our defensive 50. If that very first point had been a goal, they'd have been 2.0 and the ball would be back in the middle of the ground, not ping-ponging around our back half. It could be that they'd just clear it and get it in there again, but it also could be that we clear it and we kick a goal.

Not saying we wouldn't have been thumped anyway - I'm just saying that you can't just assume that if they'd kicked straighter they'd have won by significantly more. In our game a point affects play in a completely different manner to how a goal does, so if you hypothetically change that outcome, everything that follows is then impossible to guess. This is why it's an absolutely pointless exercise pondering the what-ifs; the only score that counts is the total score.

Bailey is in his fourth year ! Plenty of time to have drilled in a game plan, plenty of time to develop strategy - that was absolutely pathetic - we could have lost by 20 goals just as we have done every year against the Hawks since he has been in charge. Time for some bullish aspirations to match the off-field progress, not this crap about winning quarters B)

Anyone else notice this. About 23 minutes into the second quater we are about 4 goals up, Davey with the ball at chb gives the signal to slow the game down and we start to chip the ball around. Lets Hawthorn in for the obligatory goal {always happens when we try this tactic).Half time about3 goals up but start of the 3rd quater too hesitant to attack. Three blatant errors by us {not their good play} gifts them the first 3 goals of the quater.Gone momentum, gone the lead, gone the game.When we have the momentum keep attacking don't go into our shells! Reckon it was just about a turning point

Totally agree, thought the same immediately Davey signalled that and of course that's exactly what happened, like we've watched dozens of times as passionate spectators. If it's obvious to us what was about to happen, what about the coaching staff? Why do they think it will be different this time, or don't they think the same as us?

All the crap about not criticising the coaching, frankly there's very little about the club that was on display yesterday that should be immune from positive criticism so hopefully some of these perennial problems can be solved once-for-all by some significant changes.

The prospect of being a thereabouts-side for the net 5 or 8 years just doesn't appeal. Grrrrrr.....!!

Did you not see the team Bailey inherited ?? The guy is in his first real season with the second youngest team but yes lets sack him after a 45 point loss in round two. Peoples expectations for this season were way to high and when we come up against a genuine contender and get done the whole house caves in. RELAX !!! Lets judge after say round 12?

I have to say i felt absolutley gutted yesterday, purely in the manner of the loss. make no mistake, we could've lost that game by as much the gold coast did. it actually felt like a 150pt drubbing.

a few things concerned me.

1 What was Aaron Davey doing calling to slow down play with 8 mins to go in the qtr, was that his decision?

2 our midfield looks so slow. Jones is starting to become a liability. hard at the ball- yes, cant complain, ball use and decision making- terrible, he drifts around looking lost too, check if he's concust.

3 Brad green looked lost, didn't seem to lead or have a clue.

4 Jurrah needs to get a rocket or he'll be another robbo, likes the fancy stuff not the 1 percenters, although good chase in the 4th qtr.

5 what is happening to Grimes decision making when he has the ball?

6 Dean Bailey- where is the plan B? Or even A would be good!

i do feel we all are expecting too much from a young side but this is our time to show something, i really worry about next week against the lions, lose that and the wolves will be closing in.

I came home had something to eat and a single malt so I would let the anger flow out before I turned on the computer.

What I saw today:

I saw a team that was total out classed

In saw a team that should have been out of the game by quarter time.

I saw 22 melbourne players none of whom I can say beat their opponent the majority of the time.

I saw a team that could not clear the ball at kick ins and we had plenty of them to get it right.

I saw a team that will not make the finals this year.

I saw a team that is unfortunately a long way from being a power side.

I saw a game plan that I do not believe our players have the skill to implement against good opposition.

I saw 5 out of 21 players that could hold their heads up tonight, Tapscott, Bail,Martin, Rivers and Sylvia

I saw a coach that is so composed it makes me puck.

I saw My dream slip out by an additonal year.

So back to the single Malt and dreams of 2015 before we can cut it with the likes of Hawthorn.

I am not going to judge my whole season on this game, but when young fellas like Martin, Bail and Gappy can lead the way against a really hard unit like Hawthorn, and only Sylvia and Ribers show glimpses of onfield leadership, I reckon we are 1 year behind expectations.

I have had a sleep and a couple of coffees, but I am still as annoyed, angry and jacked off at our attitude last night. Front runners who couldn't toughen up with little or no concrete shown by our leaders, and a tactical numbness shown by our coach.

I hope this mongrel feeling wears off by the Lions game.

I'm not sure what it is you want and I don't think you are either.

We all knew this year was going to be another development year. I'd hope that we dont get smashed like that too many more times, but im sure this wont be our worst loss all year!

No doubt that we have some players with question marks over their heads about their futures, but i dont think there are many guys who played for Casey who i'd be rushing back in. Though I would like Gysberts to be treated like a Jack "protected spieces" Watts and be picked every week for development purposes.

I just want a new coach.

Can't believe our skill level and decision making is still as bad as it was in 2008.

Ok, we are a young side, quote game numbers. But our game plan stands for zero. Do we even have one.
