Paul Daffy's Top 10 from AFL Draft Combine

Featured Replies

Hang about.

How is anybody claiming Swallow has better endurance than Scully???? Didn't Scully pretty much break the beep test at AIS when he was in year 11???? I recall reading that they turned off the tape and just told him 'that'll do mate' because he simply wouldn't stop.

Calling Swallow as the best ever before he's played an AFL game just sounds like a continuation of the obsession with the new players being automatically better than the existing players because nobody's seen them make mistakes yet.

Apparently the DC official had to eject the tape and turn it over from side 'A' to side 'B'...weren't they the good old days. :P

Lynch/Darling could be pick #12 it seems.

Just imagine we could work out a way to get both these type players in this draft. (not necessarily those names in particular)

When comparing the 2008/09 drafts to this year, Prendergast said the past two drafts had more potential elite AFL players at the top-end than 2010.

“The depth of this draft is quite good .... but whether the top-end stuff is as good as we’ve seen over the last two years - time will only tell.

Pfft, Scullys poor kicking..... they go up and under a little but are generally on target and the boy runs flat out when he kicks it. Give it time to refine. Swallow floats them a little also- I can't believe people are saying they'd swap him.

Does Swallow have Scullys endurance or his slick hands?

Yep.

He needs to continually work on it but by no means it is poor. As for Swallows kicking, its more like Scully then Daniel Rich. And no one has Scully's engine.

From the article-

"Some footballers with a lower efficiency might not have that time or release option. But they might be the ones who take more calculated risks, try to create, are more damaging and more likely to win you a game.

Even guys whose kicking technique might not look that great can be a bigger threat if they've got a good footy brain.

Their vision, quick decision-making and ability to execute under pressure can compensate for lost style points."

Really interesting read btw, IMO scully fits in this bracket.

Well at least i have one reason to watch the GC this year- Swallow. I'll take note of his endurance and his hands, also his ability to set up play and his general football brain. For people saying they would swap, you'd be hopeing for a BOG straight up!

I keep saying how deep and strong this draft is compared to others.

It's interesting to see BP's take on it is a bit different.

“The depth of this draft is quite good, but it also depends on what you’re looking for and what you think may or may not be there when it’s your pick,” he said.

“I think there are a lot of potential AFL players in this draft and I don’t think that’s any different to any draft. But whether the top-end stuff is as good as we’ve seen over the last two years - time will only tell.

“The strength of the draft is an opinion-based business. While we’ve previously been hooked into the top three or four, because that’s where our picks have been, we’re not worried about that this year.”

http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/7415/newsid/103652/default.aspx

He's also a big wrap for Gysberts. Understandably after his performances in limited games this past season.

“Obviously pick No.12 is going to be the first player we bring into the club and logic says he won’t be as good a player as the opportunities we’ve had at pick No.1 and No.2 in the last two years,” Prendergast told melbournefc.com.au.

“But last year we brought in Jordan Gysberts at pick No.11, so if we get a player of that calibre at pick No.12, then we’ll be very, very happy.

I keep saying how deep and strong this draft is compared to others.

It's interesting to see BP's take on it is a bit different.

Of coarse it's different to yours bc, no offence, but your observations that this draft is a kind of 'super' draft don't seem to be based on any strong evidence, while the more reasoned opinions would suggest that this draft, if anything, would probably be slightly weakened by (i) the fact that 17 years olds from last year (Suns) and this year (GWS) have been already pillaged and (ii) 2 top 20 picks have been taken as father sons. That would explain why Prendergast feels that this draft might be slightly thinner on top end elite talent than previous 2 drafts.

From what I've been reading of snippets from several AFL recruiting manager, this draft appears to have good depth, with a lot of evenness of players from pick 4-15.

That bodes well for us to pick up a ripper at 12.

But, as Prenders points out, we'll only know for sure how well each draft is in a few years time.

I'm glad Prenders is so happy with the Gysberts pick. Considering those picked around him (Melksham, Lucas etc), i believe we've snared the best of the lot. I'm still happy with Tapscott, but Fyfe picked up only 3 picks later looks an absolute beauty.

...

I cannot believe you have the arrogance to tell me that I do not know as much about this draft as BP.

you think we think you're joking

I wouldn't swap either of them for anyone else in the competition.

Besides, each of them now has 18+ games built in. Why would you swap that?

Have you been reading the thread ?

Others have already said they'd swap them for Swallow.

Yep, read that.

Agreed with your final statement and added my further thought.

Ok?

I cannot believe you have the arrogance to tell me that I do not know as much about this draft as BP.

hehehe ... but BP would probably be first to admit, not even full-time recruiting staff could expect to get it right every time. Plus you would be amazed at where they have their "sources" tucked away.

Scully, as much as I am enamoured with him, will likely not be as good as Swallow.

But it depends on the evolution of the game. Scully's run and agility may become even more damaging.

Hard to say.

Different style of players, but at this stage I'd do a straight up swap in a heartbeat.

Big call MASSIVE as High Tower said, you would like to see a BOG first up. I'll take Scully anyday.

Agreed with your final statement and added my further thought.

Ok?

Best you direct your incredulity at the posts that you find incredulous.

you think we think you're joking

I know you know I know.

You know I know you know.

I know... we're just fooling ourselves.

Best you direct your incredulity at the posts that you find incredulous.

In what way was I being incredulous? My response to the suggestion of the swap? Well, yes. My response to you? I wouldn't have thought so. It was probably more sarcastic considering I had read your response in regard the aforementioned group in this thread.

As I said previously, I used the Voss, Buckley, Hird example in response to the call to swap, after that and am comfortable enough with that.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
