I'm up on the Gold Coast and I'm off to see the Scorpions play Gold Coast at Southport tomorrow.

It's going to be tough missing the Dees game at Etihad but the warm weather and the fact that I can tape the game which is shown live here is some consolation.

I've done a little bit of detective work and am pretty sure that Jared Rivers is a designated emergency for the AFL game at Etihad.

It appears that he didn't fly up with the Casey players this afternoon because at around 5pm on Twitter he announced:

"Just hitting up the movies with the boys."

A few of the "boys" (including Nathan Jones and Ricky Petterd) went to see Iron Man 2. After viewing that pap they should be ready to kill tomorrow.

My guess is that Jake Spencer will also remain in Melbourne as an emergency for the North game and, if not required, will play in the ruck on Sunday for the Casey 2's where he was also selected.

I don't know whether the VFL rules limit teams to 12 AFL listed players against Gold Coast but if they do then Rohan Bail could also miss out.

Still, it will be a good opportunity to view how Jack Watts is travelling!

It's a beautiful day on the Gold Coast with the temperature expected to reach the high 20's.

I haven't seen the ground before but, with conditions like these, I would expect the roof will definitely be off :) !

My spies tell me that Rohan Bail is up here but he may not have recovered from his quad injury. I think it's likely that the Scorps will go in with 12 Demons in the team as per the starting 18 minus Rivers.

Just got home from the game. For the first time in forty years parked the car beside the boundary fence, and watched the game from the comfort of the front seat. Was able to greet each Casey goal with a long blast of the horn. Great fun! (Pity about the ABC commentary of the Melb match to put a real downer on the day!)

Was my first VFL match, so can't comment too much on the quality of the game. But, the scores were pretty close all day, and the two teams seemed to have a pretty even tussle of it.

Have to say wasn't actually overwhelmed by the performances of most of the Melb players. Must admit was hard for my old eyes to pick up a lot of the play on far side of the ground. But from what I did see:

Miller -- Apart from a couple of excellent goals, thought he was ordinary at this level,

Newton -- About the same as Miller,

Watts -- Really didn't do much, either.

Maric -- couple of nice things, but nothing to get excited about,

Jetta -- Rarely sighted. Couple of good chases, but almost seemed disinterested on occasions,

Gysberts -- Did a few nice things, but again nothing startling,

Cheney -- did some nice things, and was solid in defence,

Strauss -- as per Cheney,

Johnson -- again, nothing spectacular,

Hughes -- thought he was just about the best of the Melb listed players. Did some really good things.

Healey -- didn't see much of him.

Bell -- Hardly sighted.

McNamara -- did a few nice things.

Spoke to Casey runner before the game. He said Bail is still struggling with a real bad corkie, so unable to play.

So, from my point of view, a good, workan-like performance from the team to run out winners by about a goal. But, alas, didn't really see any performances where any of the Melb players stood up and demanded a place in the Melb side next week. But, I can stand corrected!

Also, was great to meet Whispering Jack at half time and have a good chat. Didn't realise he was Andy's old man!

Anyway, think I'll now watch just the third quarter of the Melb match...!

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
