2011/2 (football department)

In evaluating the current list we have got and I believe we should add some experienced players to it through the draft 2010- I feel the next step is to gain a brilliant coaching team - one which has got MFC backround. Also, no doubt their will be some other changes to the football department.

In doing so, the list may comprise of:

Clarkson,Daniher-revisited possibly as Director of football,Fagan,Viney, Bomber Riley, Luke Beveridge - current Collingwood Development Manager,Tony Elshaugh,Peter German, Paul Williams,Jeff White,Leigh Newton. Please add others that I have missed.

Football Dept may hold: Connolly, O'Donnell, Wellman and possibly West. Would you have any of the above reenter the MFC -and in what role.?

I'd love to see Viney back but with young Jack ready to be picked in 2012- may not be a sound pick?

Some may say- too early to consider now- however we need to get a strategy together.Whom would you have?

Why is it in any way worthwhile to make the coaching department some kind of family reunion???

You get the best people you can regardless of who they have played or coached for in the past. The idea that "Melbourne people" will somehow coach the players better is plain ridiculous.

I'll ask as well, what it is the point of trying to bring in 'Melbourne' people?

Is this to make us feel warm and fuzzy?

Plus the whole sentiment of this thread assumes the failure of Bailey to retain the job as you have not included him in the list.

So why would the club retain West and Wellman if they are appointing a new senior coach who would likely want to bring in his people?

Also, why would Paul Williams come back to the club after leaving less than 2 years ago (3 years by the timeline you have given) to further his coaching career with the Dogs?

Touche and well said.

Get Viney Back in the fold yes. The rest i do not partiularly agree with.

Just because they played at melbourne doesn't mean anything. Did they play in a premiership? are they the best available talent?

Family reunions can be held in function room as an aside. The MFC is part of a very tough business-we need the best people

Very fair comment- would not mind having Fagan back and White as ruck coach alongside Viney..

How is Chris Fagan in any way better than, or even as good as, Chris Connolly??

Chris Connolly has been the active, driving force in making our players more available to our members and energising and uniting our football Club. Frankly Chris Fagan was almost the opposite of this.

exactly, everyone at the club cannot speak highly enough of what Connolly has done for us, show some respect

Please note that I am not advocating Connolly leaving- suggesting we may consider getting Fagan back as an Assistant coach(role he is currently doing at Hawthorn) or as a Development coach- Manager. This,I feel would be an ideal role for him and the club.

Why are we talking about changing a football department that are currently doing a fantastic job and to suggest we should get melbourne people back in is comical. Foget Viney and the rest and support the current football department that are building this club back up from the brink.

Maybe we should try to get your favourite player down-J.Brown.McNamee was very interested -wasn't he ?

Excellent.

I reckon we should get Allen Jackovich back involved. Make an excellent MFC social chair. Thinking we could get Travis Johnstone back to be vice MFC social chair.

Nick Smith, Sean Charles could also be part of our recovery program.

Brett Lovett could be a development coach and help our youngsters with public speaking.

I'm happy with Wellman and Connolly still not sold on West and Mahoney , Mahoney in Particular has not been able to assemlbe anything that looks like a functioning forward line set up although this may be due to Baileys game plan which i am still trying to work out

The Brett Lovett comment was the highlight

Allen Jackovich could becoming kicking coach whilst Mark Jackson could show the players how to do hand stands too.

I nominate this for the most bizarre thread of the week!! and it is only Monday!!!

Yes this thread has just become silly..."There's nothing to see here, you can all go home now"......."Go on clear off" :)

The only positive thing I can say in this thread is that if our current coaching department fails, I do hope Todd Viney comes back to MFC.

He is currently one of the highest rated assistants going round and is doing an apprenticeship under (who I think is) the best coach in the AFL in Neil Craig.

He is a good leader, was captain of our club and I think will make a superb coach.

Viney'll also be just about ready to take the reigns of a club around the time Bailey will have properly had a chance to show whether he is worth his salt or not.

I am at a bit of a loss as to why people are so down on Josh Mahoney, we have not exactly had a settled forward line in the last two years,

That said, apart from the players natural talent, we have seen improvement in Bate, for his consistency, positioning etc, Petterd, who kicked 8 goals in two practice games, Aussie who set the game alight when he arrived, even Stef Martin who is showing glimpses, Maric showing soemthing, they are all being coached by Josh.......coaching is not all about game day, it is developing the players also.

Nice consistent delivery into the forward fifty would also be good, with everybody from Dean Bailey down acknowledging we don't do it often enough, with a better midfield set up and supposedly better kicks in the side let't see how we go this season, before the public hanging

Understand your points but a specialist coach is like a school teacher- you can only handle them for a period of time and I think Josh's time is at the end of this year.

Based on what exactly?

Why is it that you don't feel the same way about Wellman or Mark Williams?

I do- however I'd keep Wellman ,but give him a different role. I wouldn't give Mahoney a different role as a think he is a specialist forward coach. I sincerely think Wellman could even end up as our Senior coach- I think he is outstanding.

I love how people assume to have any knowledge whatsoever of exactly what each assistant coach is doing and go on to pass judgement on whether or not they're any good.

Wellman is given a group of talented young players to work with like Warnock, Frawley, Rivers, Grimes, etc and because these players being to show ability he is a 'senior coach in waiting'. Josh Mahoney has a key forward who just put down his school books, two forward pockets from the most remote parts of the country who have only just been given boots (all of whom have been limited by injury) and a CHF with all the application in the world but limited talent and because he doesn't wave a wand over them in 2 years to turn them into a powerhouse he's not up to it.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
