Pre Season Testing

Thanks to Natham we are gaining knowledge of the current position of our players current fitness.Yesterday , straight after the the Yo-Yo test the day before, the players were tested over a 2kl run. Results were Morton, then Jones/Scully a second away.

We have always known that Jones & McLean really pushed each other over years gone by however the new boys on theblock in this area are Morton & Scully along with Natham.I find it fascinating and great that Morton's fitness has come on at this magnitude. His speed, strength, stamina as well as ability sets himself up for whatever position Bails wants him to play. I personally think he will play CHF in the intra club matches and maybe NAB cup.Or maybe the ruck as we have little to back up Martin at this time- Only rassin.

It is also interesting to read that McLean is a leader in the fitness stakes at Carlton. My analogy is that we must be up there with them. And what about Scully- WOW.

Morton's fitness and ability to run has always been elite. He ran 15+ beeps prior to being drafted.

Scully, Jones, Trengove and Morton are all elite runners and I think Grimes is not far behind. Will make it very hard for opposition clubs in years to come...

Agreed- And we still have Jack Viney waiting in the wings. I just looked up Cale Morton's beep test and it was 15.2 in 2007.This just highlights the incredible fitness of Scully. Scully beat Morton by a level in the YO-YO test Friday. The level of fitness these young boys possess it is unbelievable based on Paul Roos thoughts that initial draft picks are well behind seasoned footballers. Thanks for pulling me up Keyser

Jay's getting a bit old now...

I'd rather get Jack along.

How sure are we that Jack Viney will decide to come to Melbourne under the father/son rule?

I suppose the answer has to be "not sure": but, VERY HOPEFUL

This is fantastic, I agree totally with the OP on his thoughts on Morton - this guy is going to be the ultimate nightmare for opposition coaches, Bails will be able to use him to exploit whatever weakness the enemy has. I also agree he will start playing CHF and that this is probably a major contributing factor to us not drafting any KP in the recent draft. Without getting carried away, there are probably only a handful of lpayers in the whole league who will be able to run with AND compete in the air with a player like Morton, shutting him down will have to be a priority and then they'll have to worry about Jurrah, Watts, Scully, Trengove etc. I think we got the pick of that draft except maybe for Kruezer but I wouldn't swap. Probably the most important player on the list right now. It often occurs to me that if Chris Judd wasn't the mercenary piece of trash that he is, both Morton and Sylvia would have gone to WCE in a trade for him. I reckon it was a blessing in disguise that he didn't come here.

The fact that Scully can burn him in terms of fitness proves that he is indeed the freak he was reputed to be. He must be right up near the top of the list of fittest blokes in the AFL before he has even played a game! Someone told me last night that Judd runs 3km in 10.30-ish while Scully runs it in 9.30ish... can anyone confirm that?

surely the only thing that could stop him is if he gets offered a job at VISY

they'd still need a better pick, although come that time I'd be surprised if they don't.

I can confirm Scully runs it in around 9.30ish, however Judd's running ability is not in the same league as Scully (or also Trengove who has a very similar running ability to Scully). Whilst most of us know of Scully's running ability, Trengove background is equally as strong with his older sister medaling at the Zatopek.

From memory Judd was significantly beaten by the likes of Walker, McLean and a few others in recent time trials.

i was under the impression McLean and Judd were about neck and neck as the two best at Carlton?

He will be our most important player since Robbie Flower and that is saying a lot just watch this guy grow in stature in the next couple of years.

Yeah, naths doing way better than the website itself for keeping us in the loop..

(Hope we dont play Morts in the ruck - at 192cms and not weighing much more than a wet blanket - he'd get creamed)

If you add Jessica's 1500m and 5000m times and pro-rata the total to 3000m you get something less than 10.15, so she has the ability to embarrass most, if not all of the Carlton boys.

I have it from a very good source (his old coach) that he is almost certain to come to Melbourne.

If the 2011 National Draft was today he would be the number one pick. Therefore it is likely that he will be a very high pick in the 2011 draft. Western Sydney will scoop the pool in the 2011 draft with almost all the first round picks similar to Gold Coast this year. That being the case Jack Viney has a simple choice of going into the draft and being almost certainly picked by WS or taking a father/son rule and becoming a demon. My understanding is that he will take Melbourne over WS.

Unfortunately Jack Viney is a Hawthorn supporter (due to his dad being assistant coach there when growing up). However, expect him in the red and blue.

This is very exciting.

but then again... its Jack on the field, not Jessica. Anyone know how decent Jack is then?

I know Jack got 15.2 or 15.3 for the beep test in the SA state screening, as well as an excellent time in the 20 metre sprint, so the kid is certainly a great runner.

Under the current draft rules won't we have to wait till---2012 to draft him as he was born 13-Apr-1994 . as per http://www.norwoodfc.com.au/News/LATESTNEWS/U16sSTATESQUADANNOUNCED.aspx.

Please advise !

Feel much better now.

I wouldn't either. We got the best and thanks to Colling@#$% and the Bears we may well have pinched the second best. Cale seems to learn something every game and when he has a bit more muscle on him he will be what every Demon fan dreams of: an elite, tall, strong player that runs all day.

Yes.I see Cale becoming Mr Flexible- CHB,CHF,WING, RUCK ROVER,CENTRE- WHETHER THE COACH WANTS TO PLACE HIM.

However, he needs to put on say another 5 kgs at least. He will become a SUPERSTAR.

I am watching his development with special attention since a gloating Hawthorn supporter said last year as their Rioli darted around the 'G "You could have had him (Rioli)". Yeah, but, we got Cale.

The best response will be in two, and three and four etc years' time as Cale continues to develop and Rioli handy as he is, proves to be no better than he is already.

I wouldn't expect Cale to put on anymore then 5kg of muscle, and I think his game would not benefit if he did.

Morton is listed at 83kg.

He could easily add another 10kg at his height and not lose any of his mobility, conditional on it being done gradually over time.

Barry Hall is 194cm (2cm taller) but weighs 104kg.

He might not run the same distances, but I'd still rate him as having excellent mobility.

  • AFLW REPORT: Port Adelaide

Well, that was a shock. The Demons 4-game unbeaten run came to a grinding halt in a tense, scrappy affair at the sunny, windy Alberton Oval, with the Power holding on for a 2-point win. The Dees had their chances—plenty of them—but couldn't convert when it mattered most. Port’s tackling pressure rattled the Dees, triggering a fumble frenzy and surprising lack of composure from seasoned players.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.
