Not sure if these have been posted here before, but I was fishing around Youtube today and found some old video of Melbourne games from the 80s.

Excellent stuff Einstein.

Only watched the 1988 PF against Carlton and the following memories:

1. It was an absolutely wet day

2. High number of goals kicked along the ground.

3. Gary Lyon's 60 metre bomb goal.

4. Strawbs report which I thought hurt MFC for the following week.

Most of all, its always good beating Carlton.

Further to that:

5. DUUKE!!

6. I still can't stand the sight of that woolly-mullet-headed dwarf Fraser Murphy.

7. Rowan Sawyers was and still probably remains an officious clown

8. I sat at the main scoreboard end and it seemed we had overwhelming support that day (but only as I remember it)

9. Beating the reigning premiers, Carlton, in a knock out final. Grouse.

10. DUUKE!!

Yep i was there-loved getting wet, had a SHOCKING Hangover but that disappeared with Victory.

I think it was Ricky Jackson who was awarded a goal, that looked very much like a point!!!

I remember a carlton supporter running on the ground to get the Ump!!

G Lyons Bomb right on Half time was pure Art.

Anyone got a clip of the Eishold shot at goal? Need to see that again.

I'm not so sure about that...

I've got to say, I've been looking through these youtube clips just now and am disappointed with some of them. For one thing, the 1988 Prelim has no highlights of the last quarter. I loved the last quarter of that game. The crowd was great, it was raining and people were having the best time.

Ricky Jackson's goal hit the post I think. On the video, after the goal has been awarded and on its way back to the centre, there is a shot of Ricky with a cheeky smirk on his face raising his eyebrows to a team mate I guess. He knew it was a point.

And I think it was two Carlton supporters who ran out on the ground. Slip sliding all over the place trying to avoid the cops.

It is the one guy who posted all these clips on Youtube, along with hundreds of others of other games. He must have a great collection of old VFL Big League video tapes. I am going to email him and put in some requests for more complete footage of some games to be posted. I would love to see more of the Round 13 1984 game against the Hawks for starters.

Einstein, like me, were you also at the Hawthorn match in R 13 in 1984? It has resonated in my memory right down the years. Please let me know if you ever come across the full match.

I was also there RD1 1984 against Collingwood, when we played so well in the last quarter and then that little bugger Tony Shaw chopped us up and reversed the result. What a great pity that Michael Reynolds never amounted to much. My last memory of him is playing against Justin Madden (Carlton) at Waverley and being towelled up.

We were also so desperate back then and I'm afraid things have not changed all that much. God, the amount of football, both good and bad, we have sat through in the intervening decades and we are still stuck on 12.

Light, light, if only to die in.

Yeah, I've got the second half on tape somewhere too. I keep meaning to get all my old tapes converted to DVD. I guess I will one day. The 88 Prelim is probably my second favourite day at the footy behind Round 22 87 out at the Western Oval.

Yeah Biff, I was out at Princes Park in Round 13 1984. I was only 10. I think it was probably the first meaningful victory, the first big game I ever saw the club win. I still remember seeing Melbourne supporters dancing at the tram stop on Royal Parade after the game. I'd never seen that kind of jubilation from Melbourne supporters before. Shame everything went to rubbish after that game. The 84 team should have and was good enough to play finals.

I am about to email the guy who posted the video clips and I will be making a special request in the hope he will post more of the 84 game against the Hawks on Youtube.

As for Round 1 1984, I remember that game too. Shame about the last quarter. Michael Reynolds. I thought he was going to be a good player. Was a bit of a favourite of mine. Only ended up playing about 20 games I think. My last memory of him was at a pitiful wet wet day out at Princes Park playing full back. I got soaked head to toe that day. Those were the days. Umbrellas and muddy grounds.

Yep i almost agree with that, apart from that actual First Final in '87 when we had actually made it. Walking into the G was a proud moment. I felt like my dad did back in the '50's.

When Viney kicked that Early Goal The MCC reserve went off.

One of my strangest football memories was at that first final against Nth Melbourne. A Melbourne supporter sitting in the seat in front of me had a porno magazine, I mean real Xrated gear, and was flicking through it like it was the most normal thing in the world. We were beating Nth by about 20 goals. Wasn't that pornographic enough?

HaHa! That is beautifully Bizzare. That day was surreal, When Flower Ran through the Banner you could feel the energy inside the ground like a tidal wave. Superb Day

I got that game on VHS as well. Had to buy it from sportsplay. Remember them???

Einstein another one I would love to see is Round 2, 1983, when we unexpectedly beat Richmond.

It was the beginning of the drought for the Tuggers.

Unfortunately I just got a reply from the guy posting the clips and he says he won't be posting anymore footage than what he has already posted. He said he will post more games when he has time but they will still be only clips around 5 minutes in length. He said he is posting some 1983 games at the moment, so maybe the Round 2 game against the Tigers will be one of them. I remember that game, sort of. I remember going to the game expecting to cop a thrashing and it being a huge upset at the time and all the talk was about where Richmond were headed in the future. Well we know the answer to that now: Nowhere.

Yeah, I remmeber Sportsplay. I remember they took over the broadcast rights from channel 7. Might have been 1987? And the ABC picked up the FTA coverage. I think.

It's terribly disappointing that channel 7 pretty much dumped all their video tape of the footy throughout the 70s and 80s. They pretty much only kept the finals games. I really can't believe they did it. Whoever it was that made that decision was terribly short sighted. People would pay good money now to have some of those classic home and away games on DVD.

It was sadly a case of not enough space. Those old Video Reels were 2 inch Tape and thus very big, They just didn't have room-they were also quite expensive so many would have been re used.

Sad that Ch 7 can't run some of that stuff late night.

Channel Seven's committment to football has become a complete and utter disgrace. No two ways about it.

And 45hotgod, gee what a piece of play Eishold's was though, I mean I'd only read about it and then I saw it on Fox about a month ago in a 'worst misses' category on Before the Bounce and the whole panel was nearly in tears with laughter, I have to say that it is, objectively, the funniest shot at goal I have ever seen. As a Dees fan it is a lot more than just a miss but it is still an amazing bit of play that I want to see again! "Eishold with the shot..."

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie
