If you had shown Jack's 3 magnificent goals, it would have been news worthy, but otherwise, a ridiculous non-story to start the news with!

Watts showed he's got composure, skill, smarts and class. Will just get better. His third goal was more arse than class but hey, I was excited.

I was impressed with Hughes and McNamara. Hughes can take a grab.

Valenti worked hard and got plenty of it. Still not sure if he is AFL standard, but he's going to give himself every chance.

Wheels was a class above. The question will be who he replaces in the senior side. Hard to say.

Wona was lost out there today. Did very little. He's got a few tricks but I still wonder if he is up to AFL standard.

Grimes was quiet which was disappointing. I was really expecting him to be making a case for senior selection over the next couple of weeks. On todays form he still has some work to do.

Bell. Hmm. Didn't do alot and will struggle to find his way back into our backline now.

And as for Juice. Showed me today he is good VFL player. I think that might be about it. Will have to kick 5 for a few weeks to warrant senior consideration.

Hey guys, i did the stats for casey today. Grimes and Cheney both had over 20 touches...in fact both had 11 and 12 touches respectively after quarter time.

McKenzie was great, he goes in really hard.

McNamara also had 20 touches and kicked very long regularly. Improving very quickly.

Also James Strauss got reported in the reserves match for a crashing into the back of an opponent that was running back with the flight. It was a good hit(i enjoyed it)...should get off.

Newton was great...but Moore from Casey is a really good player. Wouldn't mind drafting him to be honest, I don't know his age or anything about him but is a pretty handy player.

My best of the melbourne players would be: Hughes, Newton, Mckenzie, McNamara.

I don't think he got much ground time today as every time they showed our bench he was sitting on it. I was looking forward to seeing him today and it was very disappointing as I know he is a class act.

The kid who really made me sit up and take notice was McKenzie. I thought he was great all game and kept driving us forward and creating play. If he keeps playing like that he is a real chance to get uplifted at some stage.

I was also very impressed with McNamara and if he is given time he could be another real improver.

I just finished watching the replay (Foxtel IQ is amazing).

Valenti: Always finds space, even with ten players around him and generally uses the ball really well. Height is not an issue when you're on the bottom of every pack.

Watts: Skinny, classy, skillful and exciting to watch.

Wonaeamirri: Back on the turtle meat? Looked like the Austin of 2008 and not the the Austin of the NAB Cup. Struggled to have a big influence.

Hughes: Very lively, provided some really good options up forward, but lacks polish.

Newton: Much better, but still missing some easy shots for goal and needs more muscle as he never looks like taking a contested mark.

Bail: Great speed and used the ball well. Will push for selection next week.

Whelan: One of the most underrated footballers to ever play AFL. Classy performance yet again from a natural on field leader who always uses the ball well and creates.

Cheney: Solid, used the ball well and will push to play for Melbourne next week.

McNamara: I'd not seen this player much before, he looked lively down back, used the ball well and created good run.

Grimes: Did not have a big influence, looked a little slow and his kicking action is still a concern.

Bell: I expected a little more from Bell, however he still managed a good performance through the midfield.

Great performance from Watts today. They were just showing highlights of his performance of Before the Game and hopefully he can play a few more great games at Casey to lead up to his long-awaited debut.

Jordie McKenzie reminds me of that young Carlton guy, Mitch Robinson, who's surprised everyone this year. I'd promote him on that effort. Valenti was good, too.

We must avoid closed minds on Valenti...."good VFL player" etc.

While Hughes lacks key position height, I reckon he's got midfield aggression plus a goal sense, We must keep our eye on him.

Also, you can see why me and a few other people had a boner for Juice for a couple of years there. At VFL level he plays all over other teams, and does it regularly enough to make you think he just has to walk onto the MCG to do the same. He's a VERY good example of the variable quality of the VFL, unfortunately. Just like CJ. I still hold out hope he'll make the step up into the AFL and starts slotting easy shots. But at the same time I don't want him to be looked at beyond 2009 if he continues to frustrate. He'll never be a leader, and he'll only get in Watts' way.

Watts was good, but I just don't feel that he deserved to be named in the best. Hughes took contested marks and took on the opposition more as well as kicking numerous goals. So I think the hype put Watts in the best more so than his actual game. Watts would have been my first emergency for the bests

I'd like you guys to have a read of my most recent post in the newton thread RE his performances at VFL level and how they translate into AFL level.

Hopefully Newton gets a few more chance to perform well at this level before being thrust into AFL level again.

Geez Freak only give him a whole year. Some of his custard efforts in the AFL were embarrassing. No coach can tolerate that. BTW, I missed your review of Miller from the Tigers game. Its must have been glowing.

was thinking the same, we never a developed a replacement for neitz because sautner played FF at sandy , not knowing caseys list history i am assuming they had no sautner and played a st kilda listed player at FF

There's always room in the team for players with Wheels' class and experience. Besides, Jamie Bennell will probably need a break soon and they do tend to rest the younger players. Whelan could also be played off the bench.

More arse than class?... I don't think so, what Jack Watts does he means to do, particularly when it is kicking a freakish goal.

That is arguable considering Newtons' fledgling career, but the fairness of opportunity always falls on the side of those who put the work in.

Miller is a shredded man-mountain who runs all day and is a leader of men.

Newton is not toned, after 5 pre-seasons, and has had problems with application and attitude.

Don't bother arguing with Freak kids, he has it in for Miller......
