I reckon Newton's 'talent' is greatly overrated. He's terrible below his knees, he's average when the ball is on the deck, and his pace can best be described as lumbering.

A one trick pony if ever I've seen one. I'm still astonished he was gifted a 2 year contract last year. No doubt he was favoured due to our dearth of young key forwards, but in reality a vacuum >> Newton. And I don't mean of the cleaning variety.

Yes but as Jack Kennedy said to Marilyn Monroe "If you've only one trick, that's the one to have".

I couldn't see Newton earned his contract extension in any way, shape or form but on the other hand if he had been at another club, was delisted and was going for free in the PSD then I reckon there'd be support for us picking him up. He's worth another look at IMO.

I'm a bit torn on this.

I agree Newton is a one trick pony, but it's a good trick. Petterd is a one trick pony too, but it's as good a trick as there is.

Back to Newton. Is he worth a spot on the list? Well, if he's never going to make it then "No", but I don't think we can definately say that yet.

If he's gone we have the first pick after Jord McKenzie, (pick 7 in the PSD which we would have used on McKenzie and then with the first pick in the Rookie draft). Now, I reckon we have enough "good footballers". Our list is littered with players who are either 1st or 2nd round picks or who can play. Another Jord McKenzie probably isn't going to make any difference to us. But for all Newton's failings which I accept, he does kick goals and has done so at all levels. 37 scoring shots in 16 games at AFL level for 23 goals, that's not bad. Stats aren't everything but then again, the score is just a stat. Like I said, it's a good trick.

IMO, as long as he's "cheap", he's probably worth the contract because if he does "work" we get something very valuable. But I understand why people think not and I woundn't have my money on him.

23 goals compared to millers 26 isnt to bad, i bet millers on 3 times more than newton, thats why the club will persist with newton, who knows in atop 8 side he mite kick 40 to 50 a season

Has the numbers for Melbourne have been allocated yet?

I think our list is starting to take some shape and there's plenty to look forward to and be optimistic about - with current stocks in 4-5 years we could have a 22 that has come thru together:

B: Frawley Garland Warnock

Rivers Martin Strauss

C: Morton Moloney Blease

Spencer Grimes McLean

F: Davey Watts Bate

Sylvia Newton Maric

I: Johnson Jones Petterd Dunn

One more cycle of early picks would be nice.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. BLWNBA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I arrived at around 1015 and the squad was already out on the track. The rehab group consisted of XL, McAdam, Melksham, Spargo and Sestan. Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
