NEW Melbourne midfield coach Mark Williams says he hopes to build on the relationships he has developed with the Demons' young players over the past three years.

Williams was development coach at Melbourne last year, after four years in charge of its aligned VFL team Sandringham.

He took the Zebras to three successive flags (2004-06) and guided plenty of young Demons into senior football.

Williams says he has had no troubles adjusting to his new job, with so many familiar faces to work with.

Jarman, who won the Magarey Medal as South Australia’s best player in his premiership seasons at North Adelaide (1987) and Norwood (1997), demonstrated that ability during five seasons as a coach when he also developed a massive media profile in South Australia.

Wooden spooners North Adelaide had not finished better than seventh in the previous five seasons before Jarman took them into the finals in his first year in 2004.

We finally appoint a "coach" to coach our team who has a proven track record of success and because he's not a recently retired midfielder we slam the club for it's decision. Go Figure? I've just read the dribble on Demonology about this. People talk of Harvey, someone even mentioned Woewodin for f--s sake. Give the club some support. Mark Williams is aa experienced coach who knows what it takes to win, I for one am gald he's been appointed rather than some untrained novice coach with an inflated sense of self. ( Paul Williams anyone!)

Not so sure about this, not because I dont rate Williams but his appointment as a player development coach made perfect sense given the success of the MFC / Sandy alignment... who will take over his current role? Somebody as good as him? The role of development coaches is extremely important, especially given where our list is at, I don't want to see that position compromised to fill gaps elsewhere.

Pathetic appointment. Would have liked to see Nathan Buckley get the role. I am sure we offered the job around - its just the standard problem at the moment. Nobody wants to be near Melbourne.

Also noticed in the paper today that Collingwood and the AFL are getting together over Olypic Park. Seems as though we will have no involvement and no training ground there. I though at the least we were getting Collingwoods sloppy seconds with Goshs Paddock.

Another no name promoted at the club. That will get the members excited. I suppose Bailey doesn't want a coach with a higher profile than himself which is almost everyone. I've never been less optimistic about a new season in my whole life. Bailey is killing this club the sooner he goes the better. If we have a season as bad as this year then god help us.

He may not have the profile of a Harvey, Buckley or West, but he has coaching experience and has enjoyed success as a coach, which many of the 'bigger' names can't include in their CVs. Coach bashing already! I am on the fence about DB at the moment but realistically I don't think anyone else would have had different results last year. He has shown he can remain calm under pressure and is prepared to make tough decisions - that's a good start.

However, I share your optimism (or lack thereof) as I think it will be another bad year in 09. I just hope we are more competitive and not just easy beats again. We must look long term (5-7 years) and retain the faith!

Do you really think we could afford Bucks? I'm sure this decision in part came down to us wanting to keep spending down because of our financial issues. Did you hear what Voss was going to get at WC? Surely Bucks would get similar and it would be heaps more then any other assistant at melbourne was on.

He won thoses 3 priemerships with half a team of rejects and a full forward who couldn't get a crack at AFL level. For a team that is pleading for sponsorships and members they are not doing much about it. Our no name coaching staff typify's this.

No doubting Mark Williams' record in the 2nd tier of the comp, but I am not sure that necessarily qualifies him as a "specialist" mid field coach. That is a different scenario altogether.

As someone else said on this thread, who is going to take over player development?

Granted, we are limited by funds, but if we have to continually sacrifice, by not getting the best, then it can only be a spiral that could see us disappear up our own rectums.

When we had someone like Ratten in that role, the guys loved him.

Fingers crossed it works, but if we are continually compelled to penny pinch, it could end up being a self fulfilling prophecy.

(1) - A big name like Scott West to inspire supporters now, but we are sitting at 0-7 a third of the way through the season

OR

(2) - A 'no name' like Mark Williams that inspires us very little in November, but who leads us to a 4-3 record at the same stage.

I know who most people would prefer.

My point is, profile is irrelevant.

If you're worried about is not being able to inspire those to sign up memberships now, after a few wins you'd have MORE people looking to sign up.

I love it when people criticise success. He won 3 premierships in a row - I don't care if he did with 3 pigs and a barn full of chickens! Success is the only measuring stick in footy. At any level it is hard to win one premiership let alone 3 in a row in the second best competition in Australia.

I take your point on "no name" coaches but I think as far as "names and profiles" are concerned our coaches stack up against Geelongs (Brendan McCartney, Ken Hinkley, Leigh Tudor & Brenton Sanderson). But that is irrelevant anyway - as I said its all about results. Geelong clearly have the results on the board and we don't. That's not the fault of the current coaches or football department. You want to lay blame point it squarely at ND and CAC who had a decade to build a list and left us with this!

If Melbourne wanted to appoint high profile coaches to attract the corporate dollar then they would have appointed Sheedy. The only way we will attract dollars into the club is success. Because of where we have had to start due to the past errors we have a long hard road ahead of us.

Perhaps a 'name' would have got the members excited - did anyone get excited about AA and premiership-winning 300-gamer Paul Williams? - but a 'name' doesn't make you a good coach.

Mark Williams' promotion might get people who've heard of Sandringham's recent success a little excited (does anyone get excited about second or third-tier coaching appointments?).

A name's nothing, particularly if your name comes from playing rather than coaching.

Do all successful people have the ability to teach others how to be successful?

I've met experts in their field who couldn't teach if their life depended on it.

Likewise, I don't know why you would think a coaching appointment pre-requisite is a big name.

While I can understand a common sense approach would suggest that it's a specialist role, it doesn't seem unusual for second-tier AFL coaches to take on different areas during their career.

I think the most important aspect is being a good coach - all the knowledge in the world is no good if you can't coach.

I think Schwab said that we would need to make sacrifices in the short-term to survive, and this would impact on our on-field ability.

You're right with regards continually sacrificing, but on the other hand you can't keep spending if it's not sustainable.
