When will this guy get his bloody chance in the demons line up. He continually kicks goal at in the seconds but the coachs never give him a bloody go. We could have used his agianst the crows today at full forward. Maybe next week??

well given he's not even a Demon.. might be a tad hard n'cest pas ?? :D

wow. i thought we'd done this thread enough.

any other puppies you want to kill demon222?

And while we're at it, why isn't Chris Lamb getting a game? Seriously, what the hell is Melbourne thinking? :D

this isn't an answer to the question, but hypothetically if sautner was on the list, would he be good enough to get a game for melbourne at the moment? I think he probably would... ignoring his age and just picking the side on the best available players, he would get a game comfortably with neitz and newton both injured...

ummmmmmm obviously you have no idea

Sautner will be in the demons line up next week.................. as a runner!

Come on, if he could cut it at AFL level he would be playing. He is a VFL player, not even close to an afl list!

Don't get me wrong, a very good VFL player, but way too slow and one dimensional to play ath the top level.

Just out of interest, to anyone who knows... has Sautner ever spent any time on an AFL list?

He's been a heavy scorer at VFL level for years now- was there ever a time when a younger Nick Sautner may have had his chance at the top level? I understand he was overweight for a long time, only trimming down a bit at the start of last year and maintaining that size since. So obviously there would have been queries over him adapting to the professionalism of AFL in the past. But did he ever get a shot? He's been the big gun FF or thereabouts every year for the best part of a decade, i cant help but wonder if he would have made it.

I'm not suggesting Sautner has or ever had something to offer us at AFL level in the past, but it would seem almost unfair that a player of Sautner's status at VFL level never had a crack at the big time. Did he spend some time on a rookie list or supp list in the mid-late 90's perhaps?

Often the superstars of the lower leagues around Australia are players who weren't quite up to it at AFL level, but occupied a spot on an AFL list at one time or another in their careers. I wonder if he ever got a crack?

ummmmmmm obviously you have no idea

funniest email of the lot, ucanchoose obviously has no idea! (hint: the first email wasn't serious...)

Email? you mean post right?

wHY oh WHYYYY did we get rid of Woewodin!?!?

My recollection is that he has never nominated for any drafts as he had no desire to play at the top level. I may be wrong there though.

Like you, I'm not sure but I think he may have a career outside of football that he did not want disrupt.

If you are correct, that is interesting.

I guess not everybody who plays footy at a high level really has the desire to go to the very top. I think if i were even remotely good enough to play at the top level, i'd do everything i possibly could to get there, and most young footballers woud feel the same.

In many ways it is a shame, because he is definitely a prodigious talent, and there would have to be 100's of kids out there with considerably less talent than he, but the desire to succeed, who become very good AFL players. But if he knew he couldnt handle the demands of AFL footy, good on him for making the right decision and becoming a VFL great.

"I completed a Bachelor of Arts in Sports Administration, followed by a Bachelor of Business Management, both at VU.

Telstra Dome opened in early 2000. They were looking for people with both football and venue knowledge, and I was offered employment. I'm now the General Manager - Operations, and I've worked there since 2001.

Our core business is around 50 AFL games every year, but we also attract a variety of sports and entertainment events.

It's vital for me to balance my personal, business and sporting life. I play VFL footy for Sandringham. I have played in four premierships and have led the league goal kicking for six years, a competition record.

The Sports Admin degree gave me a diverse range of skills and a broad understanding of the sports industry. And the Business degree skills have helped me greatly too. I'm pleased I went on to do that extra study, and it gives me the potential to expand outside the sports industry if the opportunity arises."

not a bad job... i wonder if/how much he gets paid to play at Sandy... i've always wondered why he hasn't played local footy... he would make a bucketload... clubs would fork out a lot of cash for him as he'd take a side a long way toward winning a flag...

Personally, I think it's admirable that he chose to pass it up. I remember reading a story about the talented Adam Heuskes not long after his retirement, saying that he never really wanted to play AFL football, but just sort of fell in to the job. He never put the hard yards in, and always did just enough to get by. It was the easy option -- "hey, I don't have to work, I get paid good money and can do this without really needing to do anything other than train a few times a week".

As odd as it sounds, I think it actually takes guts to pass up an AFL career when you've got the talent to make it.

Like you, I'd have worked my backside off to make it if the carrot had ever been in front of me. I'd prefer to see someone like Sautner, whose heart was not in it pass it up completely, than see someone like Heuskes whose heart was not in it but faffed around in the league for a few years anyway.

I had a feeling it was at the Dome.

Thanks.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
