  1. Prior to trade week Roos/Goody will tell the List management/recruiters what they need and it was obvious as we picked up mid types. The recruiters take this into account going into the draft and will follow this guide only if there is not much between the sought after type and the best available. Talls are usually taken first if there is not much difference in ranking - they also tend to better hold their trade in value later if needed. Reaching to far into the draft for a particular type is very risky and likely to come back and bite on the bottom.
  2. Callum Twomey has Parish ranked at 3 so its likely he will be taken by us - he is a high probability choice. For a KPP we have to hope Curnow or Weideman slip through. He has Milera ranked at the live 7 pick - ours but thinks Dons or GC may take him - if not Adelaide.
  3. Taylor said its best available unless the next is a tall and there is not a lot of difference. A mid can get 30 disposals week in week out in the TAC and not be rated that much higher than the tall who leads well, is relatively quick, crashes and bashes and kicks goals on a regular basis with relatively way fewer disposals. So the way recruiters rate talls and mids is different. There is usually more risk with the talls but if it comes up you are laughing big time. Watch for Callum Toomey's final draft update closer to draft night. He usually gets the first 10 reasonably ok. I guess he gears a bit of talk as we get closer. He said on trade radio (I heard him) that if it was not for injury he would have had Weidemen at pick 2. So Taylor and team have a lot of thinking to do. Play it safe and go for Parish or be bold and take a risk on Weideman knowing that if it comes off it could set the team up for the future. Also knowing that we may attract a top established mid next year. I think as draft day approaches the Phantom drafters and media will start going for either Curnow or Weideman at 3.
  4. The sleep at night factor may come into play. KPF's are hard to get. Saints overlooked a gun mid to get one last year. We have heaps of improvement that will come naturally from our existing mids plus Trengove and Petracca to come plus our trades. If Hoges gets injured we will be in strife or if he gets a massive offer from another club when his contract is up. I get the feelng that coaches sleep better when they have a couple of gun/good tall KPF's. If we pick up next year with more wins then we can attract a gun established mid anyway. A mid picked up now is likely to take 2 or more years to come really good anyway. I think if we rate Weideman or Curnow as say 4,5 or maybe even 6 we may very well reach to get the one we want using the same logic as the Saints - they are so hard to get. Taylor did say if there is not a lot in it go the Tall.
  5. From news.com. Interview with Hogan " Indeed, he said he’d been busy studying draft prospects — including potential forwards — to help the team mount an assault on September. “We’ve only got a young team and could do with a little more help up forward,” Hogan said. “These days the academies are amazing, you get developed from such a young age, come into AFL footy and you can basically slide straight into the system. “There’s not that three to four years that talls used to have, you can come straight in and have an impact.” Something which Hogan knows all too well, having kicked 44 goals in his breakout season this year." Seems he does not want to 'waste' an early pick on a mid this draft.
  6. If we look to get Prestia we will have to use 2017's 1st rounder+. GC have our 2016's already. Could be worth it. I now think we will pick up Parish for his quality outside work plus good o the inside. I think the probability of him making it is high and we could not take another bust. He is a natural footballer. I think there will be a quality tall forward available at 7.
  7. I doubt we will take two talls. One will do. Saints ignored claims that Petracca could be a once in a generation player last year. So talls are preferred when available now. They are so darn hard to get and costly if you have to poach one.
  8. If players are fairly evenly rated it will come down to supply and demand. That is why the saints went McCArtin last draft even though most rated Petracca at 1. ITs a no brainer that bigs are way harder to get than mids. Next years draft is supposed to be a mids draft, there are always mids coming out of contract or FA. Consensus opinion is Parish but if they take him at 3 i would think it's because they see one of the talls will be there at 7 as Salem was at 9. I just hope they pick up players who turn out guns regardless. Agree with MAnDee's sentiments in his post.t
  9. Buckenara rated Collins as the 3rd best player in the draft. Given our KPD stocks with O Mac coming through I would be surprised if we pick him up.
  10. If we take Curnow at 3 as a KPF its unlikely we take Weideman at 7 unless he is standout best available and have a strong view that Curnow can play mid.
  11. Damm!!!! Every time I turn the computer on and read footy news I change my mind on pick 3. Buckenara's Dees list review says the only thing missing is outside class. If that point of view shared by Taylor and Co. then Parish is a shoe in. I hope then that Weideman or Curnow slip to 7!!!!! Role on draft night!!!! I need to know!!!! Of course we would be hoping also that Stretch and Salem can provide outside class as well.
  12. Buckenara rates Collins at pick 3. He has 6 talls in his top 10 because they are so hard to get. Rates his footy smarts. I would not be surprised to see GC pick him at 6. They could do with another KPB. If we took Weideman at 3 I would also not be surprised to see the Dons take Curnow (KPF/3rd tall/mId) and Collins as a KPB. They have lost Fletcher and Carlisle and they know they will be down again next year in a good mids draft. If Weideman and Collins are picked up in the top 6 then one of Parish, Curnow or Francis will likely slip to 7.
  13. Callum Twomey on AFL radio during the trade period said that he genuinely believes that if not for his injury Weideman would be ranked No 2 in this draft. He is a big wrap for him. Most BF phantom drafts have him a fair bit lower. Watch for Callum's final Phantom update on the AFL website close to draft day. He usually gets close to the mark. I guess he gets a bit of information etc from clubs. So I am not surprised by Redlegs comments regarding his information. Backs up Callum's 'big' statement. on trade radio. If Weideman is that good then we would have to take him at pick 3, play him at FF and let Hogan slaughter the opposition as a higher CHF.
  14. I thought Parish but when we look at the list we one gun KFP, Dawes who is frequently injured and inconsistent and 28? next year, Pederson was was just given a one year deal - we all know what the next deal is!! No young KPF's coming through. I'm thinking maybe Curnow who can play 3rd tall forward and run through the midfield now and then.
  15. We have loaded up big on mids and have Trengove returning. Melksham can play the line breaking outside role as well as inside as can Salem. Stretch is the quick outside player. I now think we will go best available at 3 which will be either Francis or Curnow. Francis is very competitive and will be a gun 3rd tall back who can swing forward and mid. Aaron Francis (10/8/1997 191cm, 81kg. West Adelaide) Tall defender/forward/midfielder AFL biography: Tall forward/defender with good athleticism and game sense. Knows when to come off his opponent and impact the contest. Makes smart decisions with his disposal and consistently breaks down opposition attacks by winning the ball back in the air. Also a dangerous forward, he kicked four goals against Western Australian in an outstanding performance. Averaged 15.7 possessions and 5.7 marks across six games at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships winning All-Australian U18 honours. Member of the NAB AFL Academy. "He's an interesting player. His game against Vic Metro at AAMI Stadium this year was clearly the best game of football at this level I've seen. He caught every ball that went inside defensive 50 and just dominated the game. I think he'll end up at playing at either end of the ground, as a third defender or someone who could go forward and kick some goals. He'll go into the midfield at some points, but he needs to get his running capacity up a bit more. He has the speed and the agility and the power, but his endurance will need some time and some work. He's a very quiet kid, he doesn't say a lot, but he's a different person when he's out on the ground. I had our runner come back to me a few times and tell me Aaron was running the show out there." Brenton Phillips, SA talent manager. Charlie Curnow (3/2/1991 191cm, 95kg. Geelong Falcons) Tall forward/midfielder AFL biography: Powerful tall forward/midfielder who is extremely athletic, strong overhead and dangerous near goals. Showed potential for the NAB AFL Academy against VFL opposition earlier this year before a dislocated knee kept him out of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships. Returned to TAC Cup football with Geelong Falcons in the last four matches, kicking 13 goals and showcasing his potential as a marking forward. Brother of Carlton's Ed. "When the AFL clubs came around at the start of the year - without knowing what was coming ahead - I said Charlie could potentially be the No. 1 pick. He won't be, because he missed the national championships and there are some fantastic kids around - but I haven't changed my mind that much. He's the youngest of five kids and a bit of a free spirit. He goes to uni and loves his surfing, but he has massive upside. He's a fantastic athlete - he has some unbelievable times under his belt on the athletics track and he's a good high jumper, but he's still learning how to use it on the footy field. We've had him play full-back, centre half-back, centre half-forward and full-forward for us, but at the start of the year when he was really fit we had him playing as a ruck rover. He's carrying a bit of puppy fat and freaks the clubs out a bit, but keep saying hang on, he's an 18-year-old kid. Once he gets to a club he'll knuckle down and work hard. He's got massive upside." Michael Turner, Geelong Falcons talent manager
  16. As players drop off in Freo they will likely make a big offer. We need to sign him long term over the summer. Also we need a tall back up such as Curnow or Weideman put extra pressure on oppo backlines and cover for injury etc.
  17. A from me. Its now up to the List management/recruitment team to make the right selctions with 3 and 7. No doubt the player they target will be there at 3. Lets hope 7 works out. They would have one or two players in mind they think will slip/fall to 7..
  18. Its going to be a tough call for the MFC recruiters!!!!!!
  19. Is Curnow a bigger version of Petracca. Big bodies, big tanks, strong marks. Petracca at TAC level performed way better than Curnow as a forward (and that was Petracca's 1st TAC year) and also proved himself as a gun TAC mid in his 2nd year - Curnow unproved as a mid. The difference is Petracca is described as a special player whereas the talk is that Curnow COULD be a special player - big difference in risk level for a high pick - still very tempting.
  20. Is Petarcca a smaller version of Curnow. Both big bodies, big tanks, both good on the lead a strong marks up forward. At TAC level Petracca actually performed better - way better as a forward in his first year than Curnow in either of his years. In his second year Petracca smashed it as a mid. Curnow is unproved as a mid. I think there is little or no doubt that Petracca will be special whereas the experts say Curnow COULD be a special player.
  21. With the sub out and reduced rotations Curnow with a mid type tank looks tempting as a run them into the ground forward who is a strong mark. Emma says he is a natural footballer which i think is way better than the athlete first then footballer type. Doubt whether he will last to pick 7. Parish is a gun outside player described as a game changer and we lack gun outsiders. Usually outsiders do not go this early in the draft - but we need his type. Again probably will not slip to 7. Weideman would be a great foil for Hogan and Callum Twoomey said on trade radio that he believed if it was not for injury the Weed would rate at pick 2. Milera as an outside player will probably be available at 7. He has been playing well in SANFL with one 5 goal game. Can't wait for it to all unfold. Callum will produce another AFL Website draft rating closer to the real thing. He usually gets it fairly accurately.
  22. Word on trade radio we have upgraded our pick 20 to pick 7. Not sure whether Bugg involved.
  23. We have loaded up on mids the last few drafts (including rookies) and this trading period. Next years draft is tipped as a 'mids' draft in which we have already given up our first rounder. This draft is a good draft early for quality talls. We have delisted 2 talls - Jamar and Fitzy. Appears to me we will load up on talls with 3 and 10. I think at 3 either Curnow or Weideman. Viney spent time at the Hawks with Buckenara who put the Hawks list together. Buckenara's view is take the talls when you can as they are so hard to get and expensive to trade for.
  24. Given we have loaded up on mids the last few drafts and this trading period looks like we may go for talls with 3 and 10. Giving up our 2016 pick which is touted as a mids draft further indicates this. With Jamar and Fitzy delisted we need a couple more talls. Maybe a crash and bash Weideman? Callum Twoomey on AFL radio today suggests Weideman or Parish who is a game changer. I think we need a back up for Hogan - so I tip a KPF.
  25. His Under 18 form was really good and he slippred in his draft year. I suspect that he will play a similar type role to Dean Kent who has been very injury prone. We really missed Dean Kent's pace, run, defensive pressure etc most of last season. Ben Kennedy should be a good performer and will be good insurance for Dean should he have further issues with his hamstrings or other injuries. Lets hope they can both be in top form and play in the same team!!!!
