  1. If they put in strong assistants and don't perform because of Goodwin's ineptitude, then glad we have a very highly rated assistant who would be ready to take the reins. Can't make much of the review without seeing the other changes. We need Pert to come out with a detailed explanation after he finishes his review to explain why he has made the changes he has made and why he hasn't made others. I need to understand what the club sees in Goodwin who has underperformed with the list at his disposal, the list built under his guidance. Richmond and Port Adelaide were able to identify their issues and turn them around to save Hardwick and Hinkley respectively. Goodwin has not been able to solve the issue of scoring without leaking goals, he either does one and not the other; we also don't have a recognizable consistent game style. Still more questions than answers at this stage.
  2. Hi @Demon3 are you able to paste the tweet or send out who posted it? Love to know where this is coming from. Like that the clubs keeps things close to the chest these days...but somewhat frustrating as an impatient fan demanding progress.
  3. Hopefully that means a complete review of every individual with no free passes. Hope Pert has someone more qualified helping him. He doesn’t have the background to access decision making of a lot of those positions. I wouldn’t have thought it had started now but is in the final stages. Not having 1on1s with the players would be a wasted process.
  4. Do you have any intel BScotti on what it would look like with the Dees? With Burns gone, sounds like he would be the no.2-3 guy behind Clarkson and Brendan Bolton within the coaching team... Does your intel suggest that there is a large coaching shakeup in the works at the Dees where Yze will come in as either the head coach or lead assistant? Or possibly that he would be the Head Coach of Casey with other duties to build up his coaching resume?
  5. Freo have a tall forward line and ours lacked pressure and aerial presence. 4 day break and essentially had a 4 day break into the Sydney game with the travel. I would be making mass changes to freshen up the team. Would also rest our prime mids in the forwardline: Out: Jones, Brayshaw (inj), Wagner, Smith, Brown, Melksham, Spargo, Rivers, Viney (managed) In: Jetta, Hibberd, Lockhart, TMac, Bennell, Hannan, Vandenberg, Baker, Dunkley Lever OMac Jetta Hibberd May Lockhart Langdon Harmes Tomlinson Oliver TMac Petracca ANB Weid Fritch Gawn Salem Bennell Hannan Vandenberg Baker Dunkley
  6. The whole system is counter-intuitive. The AFL provides both payments and resources to clubs to pick out players that are in their region that can bring them into an AFL system. From my understanding, Clubs are incentivised to browse the junior competitions in their region for players that meet the Academy/NGA guidelines and cherry pick the best and work with these in the hope of consistently having top tier talent every year (ie.Sydney/GWS/Brisbane/Gold Coast). But the AFL is providing the resources and investment at the same time into elite talent development at a national level which does the same thing but at scale. It would make more sense to have one nation-wide system in every region managed by the AFL that helps drive overall talent, upskilled coaching, umpiring and players across the country and internationally. Instead of paying money for each club, they could make much more efficient and effective development of players which would not only increase the amount of talent available for drafts (which would be fair and equitable) but they would also grow wider interest in the game. Geelong became a powerhouse partly due to inequitable Father-son rules at the time Hawthorn became a powerhouse partly due to the introduction of two new clubs and free agency which delayed the rebuilding process of teams during that time. It is too early to tell if the current system will unfairly stack the deck in favour of teams in Sydney/QLD, will make rebuilding harder/longer, or if increased player movement and power keeps these teams honest. Time will tell. The best thing that could happen to the game would be a better management from the AFL Head Office to be ahead of the curb on all game related issues.
  7. What are you thinking will be the changes @Lord Nev?
  8. Our turnaround since round 6 actually shows us to be much better. Taking data from https://www.statsinsider.com.au/afl/shot-charting we are 53% overall since round 5. Our shot profile is also in the key zones (straight in front or in the pockets on the heat map). Rounds 1-5 we were 47% with the least amount of our shots being in the central corridor. Great game plan tweaks and ball movement upgrades have helped our turn around in form. The types of shots we are generating since round 5 means both our set shots and general play shots are more accurate.
  9. opinion..sorry should have led with that
  10. Ins: Vandenberg, Bennell, Tomlinson, Jetta and Rivers Outs: Sparrow (prefer Harmes/Brayshaw/Salem getting more mid time), Jones (vandenberg plays this role better), Fritch/Melksham (Don't think you can play both and have 2 tall forwards in a modern forwardline), Lockhart (not a lockdown defender, plays too aggressively which left us open), TMac (personally would have removed Jackson)
  11. It would be an anomaly in the sporting world if Goodwin were on a straight x dollars over x years. I know the media talk in those terms but as the players will tell you, their top rate is only achieved if they achieve all of their contract incentive triggers based on performance. If the board were smart there would have been flexibility in the contract so that if he significantly under performs the contract that the contract would only have the base rate guaranteed. You would also want to clause to have any payout to be over the years of the contract instead of one upfront payment which is more difficult for the financial and cash flow position of the club. Let's hope the board were forward thinking.
  12. Outs: Jetta, Jones Ins: TMac, Tomlinson Play Brayshaw rotating off half back/midfield. If Jetta and Lockhart are being played at 64% and 67% with week (I know Jetta was getting attention a couple of times), and 69%/76% last week then I think we can remove one of them and have midfielder rotating through between Brayshaw and Harmes as well as spot minutes up forward. Definitely don't want to see either on the wing again, asking for their managers threaten to ask for a trade at the end of the season if we don't stop mismanaging them. If I see either below 75% game time I will also not be a happy camper. Jones looked really slow on the weekend. Loved his intent to make an impact but lack of pace was noticeable. I would rather see ANB play the pressure position if that was what he was brought in for (1 tackle) but my preference is to stretch the Port defense with TMac. Port mids put great pressure on the opposing midfield...we need pressure relief marking options to help us stop overhand balling prior to clearance. Not seeing a rainy forecast so no need to be conservative in selection. If we have mids resting forward then we should have great tackle pressure mixed with Hannan and Kozy.
  13. Great pick up Lord Travis, I think this nails the issue. 2019 review from the AFL to Melbourne highlighted the requirement of the wing position and the reason why we targeted Langdon and Tomlinson in the trade period. Wingers need to create outside run and spread, overlap, help stop gap in defense but also create forward drives in attack. They are mainly outside players, run all day types. Brayshaw is an mix inside/outside mid who is also very capable on the back and forward flank. Playing him in a position that exposes his weakness in speed, agility and doesn't take advantage of his footy IQ and contest work. Goodwin did a great job recognizing mistakes in the team structure: - Adding a FF in Weid instead of playing a running CHF in TMac in a role that doesn't suit him - Moving Harmes in a Fwd/Mid role - Playing OMac which allows May and Lever to be more aggressive which, with Gawn's assistance, has made for a very strong performance from our backline Either have Brayshaw switching with Salem in the halfback (give Salem some midfield time as well) which Brayshaw has done well in the past or have him rest up forward and switch with the mids from there. Goodwin pushed him forward in a last ditch effort against Geelong where he laid some key tackles and kicked two key goals that nearly got us over the line...Play him in a position that maximises his strengths not his weaknesses.
  14. Looking at the teams playing well at the moment: Power, Lions, Saints. Their forward-lines has a couple things in common, they make the most of their inside 50s, trying for quality not quantity, kicking it to advantage. Second, they have at least two tall targets to help progress the ball downfield. With Oscar, Brown and Jackson added to the extended bench it appears the selection committee are finally going to rectify our forward structure. If they don't feel like Brown and Jackson warrant selection I wouldn't be against playing Oscar as a forward. At least he reads the ball well, has good hands and can bring the ball to ground. But hoping one of these three can play the lead up role we desperately need. Viney had the most inside 50s against Geelong, and while he is a good extractor, he often goes for the easy bomb forward instead of kicking to advantage. Hopefully with two tall targets up forward there will always be someone leading up for an easy short option when we have the clearance. Also hoping the players are moving in the zone defense, so that there are no opposition in space within 60m of the ball. It is all good to have an extra behind the ball in general play, but if the ball is in our half, we are better off causing a turnover up the field than allowing the ball the waltz across the ground and have to rebound from our defensive goal square. We did this better in the second qtr last game as Goody mentioned but need to put this into practice for the full match.
  15. Agree with you there T_U. The problem both this year and last year in my opinion is the players aren't making multiple 'reads' and select a long downfield kick even if this isn't the best option. There were multiple times where the midfielders had won the ball and were streaming up the ground, with others alongside them, outnumbering their Carlton counterparts. Instead of continuing to run with the ball they would too often bomb the ball to TMac. Carlton caught onto it quickly and gambled towards him with double team which is why a lot of people are unhappy with his game. Also infuriated by players who took too long to move the ball on after we escaped from our defence. 2020 football is all about the counter-punch, quick ball movement before the other team can set up their defence, a 1 on 1 to the forward's advantage is better than waiting for a wide open short option with the defence all set up. It must be hard to be in our forwardline when our mids make seemingly erratic decisions. There wasn't much midfield rotation from what I saw and so this could have easily been the players tiring midway through the 2nd qtr. Why aren't the coaches changing up the rotations like they did in 2018 with multiple players running through the midfield and rotating through both the backline/forwardline so they are rested and don't take the obvious option? Harmes, Salem, Melksham etc could rotate through. Frequent lineup rotation changes makes it incredibly hard for opposition coaches to scheme against and helps us create mismatches instead of the other way around. Not sure if the 'zone' the backline in playing is what the coaches prescribed or a bad execution or both. I assume the concept came from basketball, but in basketball the players are positioned to be guarding like-for-like. There is no reason, with good communication that players execute 'switches' so that we don't have Jetta trying to defend 200cm+ giants. If we turn the ball over or the opposition gain a clearance and our defenders are 1 on 1, there shouldn't be any mismatches available for an easy hit-up which happened a bit too regularly yesterday.
  16. Sure I envision the team being: In: Weid, Vanders, Smith, Bennell, Jones, Salem. Out: Brown, Spargo, Hibberd, ANB, Lockhart and Bedford. Jetta May Lever Salem OMac Smith Langdon Viney Tomlinson Melksham TMac Harmes Bennell Weid Fritch Gawn Oliver Petracca Jones, Kozi, Brayshaw, Vanders Coaches want Harmes in the backline but I think you get the athleticism and rebound through Smith. Rolling through the midfield you can put: Viney, Oliver, Petracca, Brayshaw, Harmes, Salem, Bennell, Vanders, Jones and Melksham. In the podcast Inside Melbourne, they seem to be floating the possibility of taking OMac out for Smith and sounds like they are looking at Lockhart as coming into the back line. In that case I would put Jones on to start and Lockhart starting off the bench. Probably a better side actually, better rebounding side anyway.
  17. In: Weid, Vanders, Smith, Bennell, Jones, Salem. Out: Brown, Spargo, Hibberd, ANB, Lockhart and Bedford. I have put the players in he order of who is replacing who, I think all the ins are upgrades on who they are replacing. Smith for Hibberd is a difficult one but my 'eye test' says that Hibberd has had a substantial decline in disposal efficiency which leads to bad turnovers and some of the poor inside 50s (and then bad goals against for being out of position). Smith provides better defensive cover and provides overlap without the turnovers. ANB has better pressure than Bennell but Bennell might touch the ball 6 times for 3 goals and 3 score assists, which in my view will have more impact on winning the game. Really wanted to get Jackson and Hannan (if he were 100%) in, probably the unlucky ones. There is a case that we could make 27% upgrade to our round 1 team, which gives us a great chance to get back into the Finals conversation. Forward 50s will improve with better decision makers with higher disposal efficiency on the field.
  18. Does anyone know if the international digital membership includes live streaming or you have to buy the add on? Looking at my options with an overseas posting this next year.
  19. But should the draft strategy be need > talent? If Jackson turns out to be the best player in the draft on reflection and they didn’t take him because they drafted for need I would be more critical of them. This is hopefully the last time our own pick is this low in a draft for a long while.
  20. AFL article explained that Newnes can refuse a contract with St Kilda and could become a delisted free agent. should be able to bring in cheaply either way
  21. Melbourne in: 5, 9 out: 3, 22 Sydney in: Danniher, 22 out 5 Papley Essendon in: 3 out: Danniher Carlton in: Papley out 9 Note: I don't think Joe is anywhere close to worth pick 3 but seeing early reports that Essendon wanted two good first rounders for Joe...at least the Swans keep a goodish pick to take to the draft. For a player who has played so little football and so injury prone, I think a mid-first round and later pick swaps in their favour should be enough.
  22. After academy selections, gws, freo Rated around or before pick 12 and possibly the hawthorn academy selection you would be looking at pick 14 and pick 21 for pick 3. They would be in deficit. Don’t know much about this draft but certain commentators who do say the talent tiers go top 2, top 8, top 30. GWS list manager recently came out suggesting their pick dropping back will make it harder to trade up now, they know they will now have to give up more.
