James Harmes
Absolutely love Harmesy. He’s a ripping bloke. Friendly. Great with the fans. Great with Jon Amos. Dees supporter as a kid and gives 110%. He has been heart and soul over many years and a premiership player. But his game v Lions was horrible. Horrible. 10 disposals. 4 turnovers. 4 free kicks against. He suffers badly from continually tackling too high around the neck and shoulders. Not the waist. His disposals were tardy at best. I think missed tackles also were evident. We hope he’s in the right mindset (two weeks away for personal leave) and gets the clubs support where possible. In the VFL, he was clearly above the standard and dominated. But his disposals were still lacking the sharpness by hand and foot that are needed at the top AFL level. I think his role is maybe purely as a defensive/tagging mid. It’s needed as we’ve had opposition players dominate us in the midfield without the negating role impact (example Parish last week). I think more time at Casey is needed to reassess where he is at. Hopefully he can rediscover some of the hard edge he had in 2021 and prior to reinsert himself into our midfield.

Angus Brayshaw
Agree. If we had 5 players that were ok v bombers, Gus could put his hand up. He contained Stringer and did his role across half back. Serviceable. He suddenly seems a liitle slower across the ground and likes little 15 metres short passes only. Coaches also have forgotten that he can go into the midfield.

Kozzy Pickett Re-Signs for 4 Years
Looked dangerous. Got two good goals. Tried for three marks of the year attempts in packs when his job was to stay down and crumb the pack or apply defensive pressure. Tried an amazing banana goal when players were free. He was ok v Bombers but could have been so much better. His round 1 game was the prototype. Bring close to that every week and wow !!!

10 years on: From Melbourne’s darkest days to dynasty building
Dynasty. What is this media rubbish? We won the 2021 premiership. 🏆🏆🏆😊😊😊☀️☀️☀️ that was sensational amazing unbelievable But the presume or assume that we will just roll up and win more. It takes hard work and dedication and good fortune to win premierships. Let’s just concentrate on next week. Remove hubris … it’s very dangerous

Stats Files - 2023
MELBOURNE Strength: Points from turnovers (68 per game) – 1st It’s the most common way for AFL teams to score, and the Demons are doing it better than any side right now. This would be all the more encouraging given Melbourne’s ball movement inside 50 and general forward function fell apart in the second half of last season. But Simon Goodwin’s side, which has been boosted by the addition of winger Lachie Hunter, is currently the gold standard for converting goals in transition by craftily changing angles and playing with more flare. Big improvement in this area may be the No.1 reason the Demons can win the flag.

Stats Files - 2023
Question mark: Clearances differential (-6.8) – 18th This might be the most surprising stat of the lot for a team so recognised for its star-studded midfield. Although it could be partly of the club’s own doing. While Clayton Oliver is probably the best inside mid in the game and continues to get heavy usage in the role, Goodwin has made an emphasis to expand his on-ball rotation this season. Oliver, Christian Petracca and Jack Viney are still the Dees’ main three on-ballers, but the likes of Tom Sparrow, Kysaiah Pickett, James Harmes and James Jordon have gotten more midfield opportunities. And although Brodie Grundy has done a great job filling the No. 1 ruck role in Max Gawn’s absence, the Demons skipper was the best clearance ruckman in the game last year by some margin.

Loss of Munro and Buntine (and White still out). Very young Casey group. Jordon probably will be sub so expect Baldi to play.
