I completely agree, i think todays meeting would have been a lot about the MFC setting an asking price as well, which i am sure would be something along the lines of a really good player and a top 10 pick.

He's not the first player to sook because he wants to play a role that brings more individual glory but isn't quite good enough compared to the other options.

I think WJ is referring to the deals that might be offered rather than the decision to trade Trac overall. We're clearly very happy to move Trac on, but as WJ points out, we've got the whip hand and can say no, so while the Suns might not like to trade someone like Bailey Humphrey, they might have to if they wanna get the deal done.

I agree he was never going anywhere. I still laugh about Sam McClure smug face reporting the meeting and not realise Carlton were being used for contract negotiations leverage haha But what I’ll stand by strongly is 17/17 other clubs would have signed Clayton Oliver at the same time we did to the same or a bigger deal given the opportunity. Yes the contract looks bad but everyone understood back then. I don’t like huge contracts anyways, I think anything beyond 5 years is irresponsible from a club perspective but the way the market works now they have no real choice

In my mind it’s fairly obvious that Judd is at least 5th in line for the role he wants at Melbourne and 3/4 ahead of him are similar age in bowey, Windsor and rivers It’s sad to see the kid leave but if he’s crying because he can’t get his preferred role without earning it by being better than those guys, he’s not a team player in my mind and someone that isn’t going to be part of what the Melbourne footy club is wanting to build.

In fairness to us he did legitimately meet with David Teague and patty Cripps at the time, probably to leverage his 7 year deal but the interest was there. I get frustrated with Kane Cornes knocking us for this deal. Clarry was flying at the time. We were winning, he was as consistently in the Brownlow mix, on track to be one of the greatest demons ever and 17 clubs would have signed him to the exact same deal given the chance. It isn’t an ideal situation now, but lots of players have really significant off fiend challenges and no one cares if they’re playing well. The reality of AFL footy is the AFLPA have skewed the rules so far in favour of players not clubs that all clubs, especially smaller clubs like Melbourne have to offer big money long term deals to sign anyone. Like Clarry isn’t going to knock back 8 years at Geelong and sign 3 years at Melbourne.

And the harsh reality for Judd is he couldn't look in an aggressive half back role in the 14th ranked team and somehow thinks he's going to be able to do it in a team that's higher up the ladder and should contend for the flag.

Clarry and Trac never won a brownlow because they played in a team containing Clarry, Trac, Gawn, Viney and others. it's the curse good teams sometimes live with. I have no doubt in my mind at all Clarry was the best player in the comp multiple seasons and so was Gawn.

They don't use the word shallow, but a lot used the word compromised, and i think the distinction and why the perception of shallow is valid is, if you have 60 good players in a draft, and 20 of them are tied to other clubs already, that does become a shallow pool. I mean even we've got 2 players tied to us, most clubs seem to have someone. The AFL has got to do something about this because it's a joke at the moment. or i guess they do as shown above. oops.

you're making a lot of assumptions. Steven King is on record wanting him to stay and has pitched to him, what the players think is largely irrelevant, they're paid athletes, they'll play with who they're told to and they don't have to like it.

This is another demonland myth, like the idea that we'd pay some of his salary that did the rounds and was totally wrong as well. Trac is a contracted professional athlete, he will come back if he has to and the club will embrace him and by round 3 it'll be back to normal then we'll probably do it all again in 12 months The other side to this is the Suns are doing a victory lap about this being one of their most signifcant signings ever, the fact they're saying that means they'll have a fun time cleaning up a deal that falls through

I'm not sure what his alternative is? all 17 clubs posture and play the same game, Gold Coast are right now even though they know we have the whip hand with Trac contracted. This is a real test for Tim Lamb though, if we accept a rubbish deal for a contracted Petracca Lamb can go with him as far as i am concerned, he'll never get a more simple deal to negotiate than a club desperate to sign a star level contracted player

I wouldn't even consider this, just say no and move on. We're highly unlikely to find a replacement for Chaplin on such short notice

we have the gun "Trac" and they want him. we're in a position of natural strength and it would be a huge failure to get a deal that doesn't make us really excited.
