COVID & AFL 2021
700k at a biker rally in Sturgis South Dakota. What could possibly go wrong. https://apnews.com/article/lifestyle-health-coronavirus-pandemic-south-dakota-sd-state-wire-b729c1e92cb7e0f74c12343c483f9474 The Black Hills of South Dakota roared with motorcycles and crowds Friday as the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally kicked off, with mostly mask-less rallygoers packed shoulder-to-shoulder at bars and rock shows, despite a rise in COVID-19 cases in the state. Organizers expect at least 700,000 people during the 10-day event that is a rendezvous for bikers, who connect over their love for motorcycles. For some, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime goal to make it to Sturgis; others faithfully make the pilgrimage year after year. “It’s just a great big family atmosphere, everybody’s out here for the same purpose — we all love motorcycles,” said Aaron Harper. “If you’re a motorcyclist, you have to see it at least once in your life.”

Was looking at USA hospitalisation rates today. Covid cases running at 100k per day. The last time the daily case rate was at that level was February. With 50% vaccinated you might expect to see a reasonable decrease in the hospitalisation rate compared to February but no they're almost the same. There are relatively few vaccinated people in hospital which means in simple terms the present strain is hospitalising the unvaccinated at roughly twice the rate as the strain which was prevalent in February. You can play with these figures around the edges but the trend does not lie. Get the jab and we will need close to 90% of over 12's jabbed to beat this.

The irony is that now in NSW could be a perfect time to have a mass return (2k per day) of vaccinated Australians overseas. The covid positive rates of returness would be around 20 per day maximum which could be managed through home/hotel quarantine. That's a minimal increment over the 2,000 per week which is being managed in the NSW community. Won't happen for so many reasons but what always disappoints me is that we never have serious discussions along these lines because it would be admitting short term political failure.

Sam Weideman re-signs until 2023
You don't pay a back up forward $400-500k and that is what he will be shopped around at. If the club thinks TMac can go around for two more years then the younger forward is the way to go. The big issue will be re-signing Luke Jackson for at least a further 2 if not 3 years

52.6% of eligible Bendigo residents have had their first dose. Highest rate in the country I believe......... well done https://www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/they-re-pro-vaccine-bendigo-goes-for-gold-with-inoculations-20210804-p58ftk.html

This site gives all that and more. It's updated weekly as I recall. The one thing it doesn't do is give a Pfizer/AZ breakdown for vaccinations administered https://www.health.gov.au/initiatives-and-programs/covid-19-vaccines/australias-covid-19-vaccine-rollout https://www.health.gov.au/news/health-alerts/novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov-health-alert/coronavirus-covid-19-case-numbers-and-statistics

Tasmanian Team
Tassie don't want them unfortunate but true... sure you could move them down there but they would get little by way of immediate loyalty. To give it a chance of working you would need to ensure that all the marquee Melbourne clubs are sent down there to play (yeah that will happen) and the AFL would need to give them a heap of early draft picks plus the tasmanina zone (probably would happen

Tasmanian Team
The League needs/wants the Tassie government money. Next move is for Tassie to wedge the AFL. Then the behind the scenes games play out. Hawks will lose their easy money... that's a certainty Where will North end up... financially does it matter as they will always be an AFL supported club just like GCS etc. Left field... watch for NT and Tassie getting togehter to put on the big squeeze

Unfortunately not much chance of any other top 4 team losing. It's up to us. For most teams the Eagles in present form are an easy scalp... still seeing 1 goal 6 from the last quarter when we were almost 100 points up

I find this site somewhat hopeful. It's a counter site for world vaccine rates that allows you to look at any country. The world is now over 4 Billion doses https://covidvax.live/ Japan at nearly 2 million doses a day is one of the biggest improvers as is Russia at 700k per day. India still at around 5M per day.. needs to achieve a minimum of 10M and of course China at 20M per day

For those who are vaccine connoisseurs (a phrase used to describe vaccine shoppers in Brazil) it seems Moderna is now the favourite. Similar initial efficacy to Pfizer but after 6 months still at 94% against Pfizer around 84%. Oh to have such choices... Meanwhile my friends in Asia are so happy to have Sinovac which barely cracks 50% and is rather weak after 3-4 months. https://www.theage.com.au/world/north-america/moderna-says-its-covid-19-shot-maintains-high-efficacy-after-six-months-20210806-p58gby.html

As OD has said 6 is the minimum Now anything around 10 is considered the sweet spot. If you feel exposed get it anytime after 6 but better at 8,9 or 10 12 was picked in the UK for supply reasons and it became the early default standard. Good luck

COVID & AFL 2021
they could easily fly one or two games into Adelaide which would make it work well crowd wise If you were playing all in WA at least two of the first weeks games would be played at a WAFL stadium because you just wouldn't get any reasonable attendance for all four games. Other than the GF the crowds in Qld last year were rather abysmal

not convinced that Bowey is the right replacement though. Could be interesting. Seems Lockhart has missed his chance

TEAMS: Rd 21 vs West Coast
no Hibberd is a little surprising... will be interesting to see how the defence structures up against a more agressive forward line than that which GCS served up last week.

Position names
half back flank was where you hid your worst player except in schoolboy football it was the wing. (You could stand on a wing all day and never see the ball.) The position that has clearly disappeared is that of the "follower" or ruck rover. TBH I coudn't tell you who plays centre for MFC these days

yep ... being vaccinated is three times better in preventing infection than not being vaccinated (100k in the study which is a very large study) https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/english-study-finds-50-60-reduced-risk-covid-double-vaccinated-2021-08-03/
