POSTGAME: Rd 08 vs Gold Coast

GCS are a decent team at home make no mistake and they will win more games there this season than they lose IMO particularly with Miller in the team. I thought we played ok, but it was one of those games where things almost clicked but didn't. Fritta was well down, and he'd be very disappointed with his first three quarters and even more so with his poor goal kicking in the last. I don't want to focus on the umpiring other than to say I'm still shaking my head, at least 4 occasions Kozzie executed perfect tackles and clearly his opponent failed to dispose of the ball properly but play on each time - bizarre. JVR was trying to spill - yes, a bit clumsy but there was zero malice in that action and his fist was millimeters from the ball. In the end happy with the 4 points and we move on. Having watched most of the Casey game hard to make a case for BBB or JS as tall forwards so not sure what the plan is if JVR is out. Spargo might be an inclusion and hopefully Hibbo is ready to roll again.

NARRM Set to Return in 2023

I've heard about Marngrook, but I thought our game was the brainchild of this fella (Tom Mills). Don't get me wrong Australian rules football has and will always be infinitely better for the participation of our indigenous players but not sure there is any tangible evidence for the above claim. If there is I happily stand corrected.

PREGAME: Rd 08 vs Gold Coast

Agree that Joel is a chance if his form remains strong and he stays healthy. He is a bit frustrating because he certainly does have ability and "could" be quite dangerous as a forward if he can stay fit and focused. I thought his kicking for goal was surprisingly good last game also. Presumably he is also benefitting from Chocko's tuition in that space this season.

Fair enough we all have differing opinions on performance / selection. By your own admission BB didn't actually do much to warrant selection other than being a decoy and occupying the focus of one of their key defenders. I thought their best defender was on TMac anyway but that's another discussion. The BBB, JVR, Max, Fritta combo that you'd like to see lacks mobility to me. Opposition sides would be licking their lips when the ball hit the ground with that forward structure. I'm a huge believer that one of our main weaknesses is when our F50 pressure is down, and teams can quickly transition, and our defense doesn't have enough time to get set. That is when teams score easily against us.

Hard to be definitive because if he is sore that would explain his form to some extent. I really don't want to be critical of BB but at present he simply doesn't do enough to warrant senior selection. He is not taking contested marks, he is not mobile enough to get separation from his defender to be dangerous on a lead and he offers next to nothing in terms of defensive pressure when the ball is in dispute or when the opposition defenders are transitioning out of D50. I suspect at least some posters calling for his selection in the senior team have not bothered to watch the Casey games.

		Welcome to Demonland Josh Schache

The compete hard and help pressure the opposition when they have the ball is his Achilles IMO - hopefully he can improve in that area and perform well He should realise its now or never

		Steven May One on One

That's a pretty interesting and I think quite accurate assessment. Agree that his ground ball skills can be iffy but so too are his short kicks over say 25 to 35 metres where he seems to struggle to hit the target or kick to advantage. This is a confidence thing IMO. Our coaches would be well aware that opposition teams will to look to take marks 30 to 50 metres out from goal on leads - nobody will continue to bomb long to the square because that's our strength. I'm not sure what instructions are given to the wingers re defensive structure, but I think they need to play a big role in crowding that space just inside D50 so that its difficult for opposition forwards and mids to get uncontested marks.

Tells you something about the form of the blokes at Casey last week that might be his replacement in F50. Don't look at his contribution as just goals scored - yes that's obviously one of his main KPIs as a forward and I still think he will have games soon where he kicks multiple goals - this week could be one of those. What he is much better at than (BB & Schache) is competing strongly in the air stopping opposition intercept marks and chasing when the ball hits the ground I wish we had two Petty's so one could play back but we don't. May is in very poor form IMO - if he was flying, we probably wouldn't even have to think about Petty going back
