Ess have to let him go and pay him out. They can't expect him to coach for them after this. If they don't the AFLCA needs to get him out of there, pronto!!. They should have made a public defence for him already and not left up to his colleagues. That the AFLCA said nothing to support coaches who were very badly treated while in contract: Shaw, Teague, Noble and now Rutten suggests there is something very wrong with that organisation.

The sensible thing to do. The Ess factions have been warring for a long time. It wouldn't end if Clarkson went there; it may have even become worse. Ess has kicked the biggest 'own goal' of all time. They are now so badly fractured who knows how long it will take to put the pieces back together. Would be happy if it takes 'forever'! If Clarkson turns them down, who would be silly enough to take the coaching job. Time for the popcorn!

Did he add what they and other teams do to Oliver... He has played that 'poor Neale' card a few times now this year. Probably trying to get the umps on side. He should show more public belief in his team rather than sook.

I know we all love TMc and want him back but lets remember he was dropped this year not long before his injury. Our game is now built to have one tall fwd Would we change it for two tall fwds this late in the season? We know that heading into the finals, team selection, cohesion etc relies on consistency and predictability. We have deliberately changed to a smaller fwd line and it is starting to click despite the shortcomings of ball movement and i50 delivery. Not sure TMc will make it back into the team nor we add another tall down there.

Nothing wrong with it at all. I agree Eddie is a pain. He and the squabbling is why I stopped watching FC several years ago. When a media thread starts up it often defaults into to a pile on, of one or more of the commentators and I could see that happening in this one.

@WalkingCivilWar It is true. The Contracts thread was rpfc's baby. I fostered it when he was busy for a while. Thanks goes to other DL's who have made suggestions to add or highlight info to make it the resource it is today. @rpfc happy to give your baby back into your care if you want.

I've already said I didn't see LDcV's post referring to Caro and Eddie. No it is not ok to bag either of them. It is not ok to bag anyone doing their job. No agenda. I just find these type of threads tedious. They and the number of repetitive threads on DL is causing me to post less and less these days. So maybe I do have an agenda: enjoy DL a bit more than I have lately. And before you tell me to not open a thread if I don't like what is posted, believe me I don't. After the first 10-20 posts of a new thread the writing is often on the wall and I don't open them again. To qualify that: if anyone quotes me I will come to a thread to give them the courtesy of reading their comments and if required respond. This thread is now in that category.

A problem for Ess is that if Clarkson brings in own people Ess will have some hefty staff contracts to pay out straight out of the soft cap . The AFL will probably bankroll some of the retrenchment costs were it to be North (like they did us) but all hell would break lose if the AFL were to help Ess, Clarkson's ego may lead him to the big club but I hope his political skills are well and truly honed. His bully-its-my-way style won't work at Ess. Not all staff or board members want him.

Jaspa Fletcher is also a F/S who is expected to go in the earlier part of the draft. They don't have enough points for both but will get a good comp pick for Mc Stay, bring some of their 2023 draft currency into 2022 and they will get the deals done. As you say they may also trade out players for picks this year.

The Howe trade isn't so bad in that we got pick 29 back which became part of the pick trade package with GCS that enabled us to get Oliver. There were other aspects of the Coll and the GCS trades which I've left out to not overly complicate the end result of the Howe trade. I can come back and list them if anyone wants to know all the permutations. But the bottom line is we got Oliver.

I know he played in that game. His OTT celebration had an element of 'up yours' about it which to me was in poor taste. Howe was similar. In the video he claimed to be 'back at Melbourne now'. Sure he can support both clubs but my (rhetorical) question was who he would support in a final. That is when we would know if he is one of us.

While the Gabba looks like a 'fortress' they play weaker teams there, like Geelong at Kardinia Park. A look at their record there this year: Wins: Port, North, Coll, Eagles, Giants, Saints, Bulldogs, Suns, Carlton Losses: Ess Only two of those teams made finals last year. Of the two wins vs this year's top 8 teams the Coll win was early in the season when they weren't doing much. Like Geelong they tally up wins at their Home ground but fall short in finals when they come up against the best teams. Dees by 5 goals!!

The credit for those drafts doesn't go to Clarkson as he didn't leave Port until after their 2004 GF win by which time most drafting decisions, especially at the top end, would have already been made. He wouldn't have had the gravitas at that time to exert much influence. In his latter years Clarkson burnt a few 1st round picks/first round draftees to get Mitchell, O'Meara, Wingard. A bit like Ross Lyon at the Saints he left the list in an ordinary state. Ess should learn that 'all that glitters isn't gold'. But then again they might just bring out the worst in each other.

From bigfooty: I am going for Lions by 30 in the best four quarter display we have seen all year full of individual brilliance, team defense, desperation, focus, accuracy, no injuries, and a huge fillip for the finals series (that is re the Lions not the Demons btw). theyve definitely had the wood over us recently, our last 3 matches against them stick out to me as some of the more painful ones in the fagan era. the home and away losses sucked in particular where we looked a million bucks and then wilted in both. BUT none of those were at the gabba. i reckon we're up for it Feel like we'll get the Dees this week. Wouldn't be confident against them at the G, but equally we beat them this week and they'll have to go the very long way to the GF. Meanwhile, I'd back us against Sydney week one - home or away. Players such as Fritsch, Pickett and Meklnsham concern me match wise. I think Andrews should have Brown measure, but those three I mentioned give me headaches as does Petracca going forward. Hopefully our mids learn from last time we met by not putting it up high for the likes of Lever and May to have a field day. Joe should do what he did against Weitering and drag May / Lever to places they don't want to be and give the likes of Cam, Linc, Charlie room to do there thing. Clug was alright, Harmes tagged Neale out of it, Berry tagged Langdon but nobody else did much. I unfortunately have 0 confidence in this game and kind of want to put serious money on Melbourne @ $2 I'm confident in our ability to beat Melbourne this time around, however, it'll hinge on whether or not we can make the most of our periods of dominance and not waste them as we did against the Saints, and whether or not we have the concentration necessary to apply ourselves defensively for the majority of the game. Hopefully, our boys come out and make a physical statement early, especially after the mauling the dees gave our mids earlier in the year. Good chance their is a 'sting in the tail' of Grundy's contract figuratively and practically. He signed in early 2020, before the sal cap was cut and the year before they did a salary dump and off-loaded Treloar, Phillips and Stephenson (for less traded picks than they were worth) and they had back-ended contracts so had to be traded. There is a very good chance that Grundy's contract was also back-ended so the next 5 years may well be more than the mooted $1.0m per year. The Treloar trade looked ok in terms of picks for $ trade off, until Coll tried to reneg on part paying his contract for the remaining years. The AFL forced them to honour the verbal agreement. Question is how much of his contract will Coll pay? The more they pay the better trade they will want.
